Hijack this! Slow, Virtual Memory low, apps shut down...

Unread postby Lola » January 16th, 2009, 2:48 am

My problem is that I am a Facebook user. Since I have been using Facebook, my PC is running slower and slower. I get alerts saying that my virtual memory is running low and apps spontaneously shut down (what's that about?), I get redirected to ad sites and generally have issues. I have spybot, AVG, Ghost Surf, pop-up blockers, etc., but nothing obvious shows up in scans.
Can someone please have a look at my Hijack-this log?
Also, can someone please explain the virtual memory issue? I have had my laptop for 3+ years and have never had this problem until recently.

Many Thanks! Lola

I'm sorry we couldn't help you sooner but as you can see the forums are extremely busy and our volunteer helpers are at full capacity. I'm subscribed to this topic now and will help you with any malware issues you may have, if you still need any assistance.

As it has been a while since you posted last and changes may have been made to your system please run HijackThis again and post a new log in your next reply along with a brief description of how your computer is running.

No changes, still slow, still occasionally get the "virtual memory running low" alert... Here's the new log per your request.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Lola,

Nothing showing so far, but I can have a deeper look. Virtual memory in very simplistic terms uses disk space to give a computer which may be running low on RAM at a particular time a boost particularly if you were using memory intensive programs like graphics editing programs. We may be able to remedy your virtual memory issues by increasing pagefile.sys but we can come back to that.

Step 1:
Download at your desktop DDS from one of the links below:

Link1
Link2
Link3
  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • A black Screen will open, just read the contents and do nothing.
  • When the tool finish it will open 2 reports.
  • Copy/paste both reports back here and remove DDS from your desktop.

Re: Hijack this! Slow, Virtual Memory low, apps shut down...

Unread postby Rodav » January 24th, 2009, 5:03 pm

Your virtual memory issue seems to be caused from a lack of physical RAM. Have you ever had more than 512mb installed on this computer?

Step 1:
  • Please download DAFT.EXE and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Read the disclaimer and click OK
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When done, click the Save log button.
  • By default, it will save as daft.txt
  • Post the contents of that file in your next post.

Step 2:
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Step 3:
Run HijackThjis again, do a system scan and post:
  • The daft.txt contents
  • The Nod32 results
  • The new HijackThis log

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
