when the batch file ran, there was no done message. the window popped open and popped closed almost immediatly.

It just occurred to me that in between sweeps I did run McAfee after I reinstalled it. I think it did find "uioee.dll" and deleted it... sorry about that.

Here is the malwarebytes log:

this might be totally unrelated, but also I noticed that my soundcard no longer seems to work.

I'm not exactly sure when sound stopped. I havn't been really trying to listen to anything durning this ordeal, most of the music being on the network server and all. But when I tried yesterday, nothing. Seems odd.

Anyways, here is the new log

Booting to Safe Mode

:!: Print out these instructions and the instructions below, because there is no internet in Safe Mode! :!:

First, I need to explain how a PC boots. Briefly.

First, the BIOS loads and performs a self check (POST). This is why you hear a beep coming from your computer when you boot - if your motherboard has been fried, the beep will not be a beep, but it will become a sirene. (Personal experience).
After this, it loads a program, which loads some other programs, which then load Windows.

Okay, what I want you to do now is the following:
  1. Reboot your computer.
  2. After the POST beep and right before Windows loads you need to press the F8 key. You will have about two seconds time to do this. It's best to start tapping the F8 key continuously right after the BIOS screen has vanished (the BIOS screen should be the first thing you see when you start your computer).
  3. If you did not do it right, Windows boots normally. Try again.
  4. However, if you did do it right, a menu showing various options will appear. Choose Safe Mode.
  5. If Safe Mode is not available in here, try pressing F8 one more time; this should bring up the right menu.
:!: If you cannot boot into Safe Mode, or if there is no Safe Mode option at all, STOP and TELL ME! Do NOT continue!

Once Safe Mode has loaded, log in as usual. (It could be possible you see a new 'Administrator' account - ignore that).

Windows will now produce a beep (which always makes me jump) and tell you that you're in Safe Mode. Click Yes to continue in Safe Mode.
The above does not apply to Vista

You can now continue with the fixes. You cannot access the internet while in Safe Mode so you must have a physical copy of the fixes (written down/printed out), be sure to heed this advice.

Next, open HijackThis, click do a system scan only. Put a check next to this line and click fix checked:
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: uioeey.dll

Reboot back to normal mode and post a new hijackthis log.

I have good news.

Your hijackthis log is looking CLEAN.

If you still experience issues, please inform me, otherwise please perform the below:

If you still have sound issues try uninstalling then reinstalling the driver. If that doesn't solve it I can redirect you to a forum dedicated to solving general computer issues.

Uninstall ComboFix
  • Disable all your antimalware programs like you did previously
  • Click Start > Run and enter:
    Code: Select all
    ComboFix /u
  • Click OK
  • ComboFix will now uninstall itself

Install a firewall
There is no firewall installed on your computer!
Either that, or you're using Windows Firewall, which is not a good idea.

Firewalls are programs that monitor incoming and outcoming connections to your computer. Did you know that, just by connecting to the internet, you are being exposed to hundreds of treats immediately? The way to solve this, is to use a firewall, and up-to-date antivirus software.

Windows Firewall only monitors incoming connections. This means that, once you are infected, the malware is free to ask for new instructions, send private data to its creator, or invite its malware buddies to come over. In other words: it's almost as good as no firewall at all.

Download a free for personal use firewall NOW from one of these sources:
COMODO Personal Firewall
Online Armor Free

(COMODO also bundles antivirus - if you already have antivirus software make sure you don't install COMODO's antivirus as well).

Install Adobe Reader
Okay, here's the deal.

You're using an outdated version of Adobe Acrobat, which will undoubtedly contain security leaks.

I am not going to force you to update because it costs quite some money to do so, however I insist that you use an updated version for viewing PDF files.
For anything else which the reader cannot do, feel free to use your Acrobat 6.

So now please download and install the latest version of Adobe Reader from here.
From now on, use the Reader to read PDF files.

Congratulations!

As far as I can tell, you are CLEAN!

Image

Have a big cup of Image, sit back & relax, and now please follow a few of the following tips; they will dramatically reduce your chance of getting infected again.

  • Turn on Automatic Updates if you have not done so. It is MANDATORY to keep your Windows updated, otherwise you are vulnerable to exploits! To turn on Automatic Updates: click Start > Control Panel > Security Centre > Automatic Updates.

Below are optional items. It's highly recommended to read them through, but decide for yourself how many of these recommendations (if any) you follow.

  • Install WinPatrol from here. Instructions for use are here.

  • Install SpywareBlaster to protect you from bad sites. Download - How to use it

  • Install a custom hosts file. Let's say I have a directory of 640kb's worth of bad sites. Let's say I can make sure you will never be able to access those sites, so you will never get any infection from those sites. It's like blocking a site - without site blocking tools. How would you like to never be able to visit (a lot, but not all of the) malware-infected sites again? Well, now you can!
First, we must disable a service, as Windows cannot work with a very large hosts file while that service is active. This will not affect anything else.
    The disabling routine:
    1. Click Start, then Run
    2. Copy and paste the following:
      Code: Select all
      sc config dnscache start= disabled
    3. Click OK.
Next, you can download the custom hosts file from here. Installation instructions can be found there as well.

  • Install Sandboxie. Sandboxie isolates programs into a sandbox. When you get infected, and the program that caused this (i.e. Internet Explorer) is inside the sandbox, the infection will remain trapped inside the sandbox. Then it only takes a few clicks to empty the sandbox and thus kill the virus. Sandboxie is completely free! Download it here.
Note that using Sandboxie does not guarantee that you will never get infected. Some malware can bypass Sandboxie, so don't let your guard down!

Please reply to this thread once more so we know it can be archived

actually I had already just deleted the ComboFix exe on my desktop... will that be OK? or does it leave messy stuff behind?

I also do use McAfee's firewall system... did that not show up?

I'll look through your recommendations. Thanks for the help Odd. Fingers crossed, I'll try not to do stupid stuff in the future.

Yes, it will have left stuff behind, so please redownload ComboFix and uninstall it the proper way.

I didn't see the McAfee firewall but that is usually the case with such suites. Please ignore my firewall instructions :)
