Hi,

My girlfriend hadn't updated her virus definitions since last march and suddenly she couldn't use her computer for all the popups, opening even when the browsers were originally closed. Interestingly most were "legitimate" advertisers. Only about two porn sites out of literally hundreds of windows. At first, I was prevented from updating definitions, but eventually pounded them in with a flashdrive and got some progress. Lots of stuff found and supposedly fixed. Ran them and ran them, rebootedand rebooted, etc. Follows a partial list:

AVG 8.0

qzdisiprfl.dll
GetModule32.exe
Spywareguard.exe
svhost.exe
gadcom.exe
38.exe
jsmbar.exe
Grandpack2.dll\
KQNQvDaq.exe
atsptldr.dll
TDSSpqlt.sys
erzkui.dll
nqidsc.dll
otrxykkb.dll
TDSSbrsr.dll
TDSSoiqh.dll
TDSSriqp.dll
winscenter.exe
yuuihdcr.dll
A0000016.dll - plus other similar
wpv501229907565.cpx

SpyBot S&D 1.6.0

SpyWareGuard2008
WIn32.TDSS.rk
Internet Speed Monitor
Smitfraud -C
Spyhunter
Virtumonde - various
Win32.Agent.aiae - various
WIn32.Small.buy

AdAware 7.1.0.11

virtumonde
and others already listed

ALL

Lots of tracking cookies

Now, it looks like many are "cured", but popups continue, less maniacally, mainly from globaladsolutions. I managed to find and delete some of it but there is still a "RON tool globaladsolutions" that wants me to type in a code before continuing the uninstall, but I hate to "authorize" anything like that.

Meanwhile the computer is acting very slow, like it got the stuffing knocked out of it! I'd do a clean reformat, except she is just starting school for the quarter and has a student version of autodesk that was a one time deal. It will expire in a few months anyway, but she needs it for her class and can't spring another $200. Furthermore, finding her data is complicated by the fact that she thinks it is stored in her recent doc menus, therefore they are stored anywhere and everywhere and I don't want to wipe out her projects.

If it is stupid to proceed without a reformat, just say so and I will give her the bad news. But I've got about three days into this so far - it's almost like a new hobby, except for the frustration.

Hello tip and welcome to the forums.

Please do not run any other programs with out my permission !!
Run all programs in the order posted !!!!!

My name is flashh4 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:

1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)
4. Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
5. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
6. Please post all request .......... not as a Attachment.

If you can do those things, everything should go smoothly.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

First i need a new HJT log because this one is old.

Then give me an Uninstall list please !!

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

*Note == There is a 5 day limit which you must respond to this topic or it will be closed. Then you will have to ask for it to be reopened or start a new topic.

Post these:
1. New HJT log
2. Uninstall List if not already included.

Thanks
Chuck

Flash4,

Oh boy! Thanks.

I opened the control panel to verify what accounts exist. There are two administrative accounts, one called Francesca, the other friend. There are no guest accounts. I don't think anyone is using the friend account.

While I was doing that, AVG popped open a window alerting me to a number of threats, trijans and the like. It wanted me to fix them, so I clicked OK, but it replied that some could not be healed.

Here is the HJT log:

Hi tip, thanks for the new logs. Now lets start the cleaning.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Ran Malwarebytes. It wanted to reboot. Did that. Here's the log:

Hi tip, lets clean some more.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
    File::
    c:\windows\Tasks\rpvidrmj.job
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\rbvwqxppusba.sys

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
    "Notification Packages"=hex(7):73,63,65,63,6c,69,00,00

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

NEXT

I need a new Combofix log.

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt

NEXT

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX from Kaspersky. Click Yes.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Next button.
  4. Click on Scan Settings button.
  5. Select extended under Scan using the following antivirus database:
  6. Check (tick) these boxes under Scan options:
    • Scan Archives
    • Scan Mail Bases
  7. Click OK
  8. Click on My Computer under Please select a target to scan:
  9. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. Click on Save as text button and save it to your desktop.
  10. Copy and paste this log in your next reply.

Please post these:
1. New Combofix log/report
2. kaspersky scan log/report
3. New HJT log

Thanks

Greetings!

A few complications to report. When I first dragged the script to combofix, the program initiated, asked for an update and then rebooted. I wasn't sure if the script survived, so I did it again. During that, AVG popped up a balloon, so I was concerned that it wasn't fully off. Therefore, I repeated the procedure after assuring all other protection was disabled. Then, according to instruction, I produced another scanlog. Hence, there are four combofix logs. The initial logs are numbered 1, 2 and 3. The final scan is 20090114_combofix_log.txt. Hope that's OK. Otherwise, no ostensible "unpredictable results" are evident.

Everything else went according to instruction, except Kaspersky required a java update which seemed to go without a hitch. The edition displayed on my screen had somewhat different navigation than described in your directions, but I think it all got done.

The logs are attached.

Thank you very, it seems to be working.

Greetings,

Wasn't able to find a Reader 8.1.2 Security Update 1 (KB403742), but removed everything with acrobat associated with the name.

Windows did a security update/reboot as the reader download finished.

Everything else according to instruction.

Here is the HJT log:

Seems to be working much better, maybe fine. It did everything I asked, though I have only been running it through your instructions since we began. I'll try it out.

Kind Regards,

Hi tip, it was great working with you.

Congratulation you are clean !!!

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

* Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
* Select Create a restore point then Next, type a name like All Clean, press the Create button. Once it's finished, press Close.
* Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr and press OK.
* Select the More options tab.
* Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combo-Fix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP or Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    • Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date
Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
      Secunia Software Inspector
      F-secure Health Check

    • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupda ... ankspage=5 regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    • Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

      Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide

      Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide

    • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

    • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
