Oh yes, yes, yes I need help! Apologies for the delay. Am I not supposed to use my computer between steps? ;-)

Not a problem. It is best to limit use during a malware removal process but you do need to go online to post requested logs ;)

1.) After hitting the power button I have had to do a hard power-down and start my computer over again because Windows wouldn't launch...well, the computer stalled, I shouldn't presume it was related to Windows but it was about the time when the windows screen would usually appear. This hard power-down and restart issue has happened twice. Otherwise, things seem to be running okay. Maybe slow at times? I can't tell as I am using it less because of the holidays (busy with family and all like you ;-) and nervousness about these viruses.

A system conflict may be the cause as you have three installed security applications and one has a Anti-Virus component that have active services plus the McAfee Security Suite.

I advice we uninstall these now and keep Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and the McAfee Security Suite only.

I am the only person using this computer though you will see a second profile created - not used i a long time and that person no longer uses this machine. I just never got around to deleting the profile but it has been years since he has used this machine.

Next:

Your Adobe Reader application is out of date. Out of date versions have security vulnerabilities.

Please go here select Operating System/Country then choose to upgrade to Adobe Reader 8.1.3 as this is the correct version(Not v9) to upgrade to for your current installation.

Next:

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Lavasoft <------- Ad-Aware
Sunbelt Software <------- CounterSpy Antispyware
PC Tools <------- Spyware Doctor


Next:

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Check Hard Disk For Errors:

Press Start->Run, then copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms at all?
  • checkhd.txt
  • A new HijackThis Log.

OK that is fine.

Please read this topic pertaining to system maintenance, it will prove of benefit toward keeping your computer both stable and improve performance.

Congratulations your machine now appears to be malware free, I just have a few tasks for your good self to carry out and some advice about on-line safety etc.

Time for some housecleaning:

Uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click on Start >> Run...
  • Now type in Combofix /u in the and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Image

Also delete both RSIT.exe and this folder C:\RSIT

Then empty your Recycle Bin.

Clean up with OTMoveIt3:

  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt3 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Optional Update Advice:

Your current Internet Browser is out of date. This is potentially dangerous and could be used as a way for malware to infect a computer. You are currently using Internet Explorer v6.00 SP3 (6.00.2900.5512). Even if only used as a means to access the Microsoft/Windows site, the choice remains yours to update or not.

Please download and install:


Keep your system updated:

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Please ensure that you visit the following websites regularly or do update your system regularly.

Install the updates immediately if they are found. Reboot your computer if necessary, revisit Windows Update and Office update sites until there are no more updates to be installed.

To update Windows

Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update

To update Office

Open up any Office program.

Go to Help > Check for Updates

Alternatively, you can visit the links below to update Windows and Office products.

If you are forgetful, you can change some settings so that you will be informed of updates. Here's how:

  • Go to Start >> Control Panel >> Automatic Updates
  • Select Automatic (recommended) radio button if you want the updates to be downloaded and installed without prompting you.
  • Select Download updates for me, but let me chose when to install them radio button if you want the updates to be downloaded automatically but to be installed at another time.
  • Select Notify me but don't automatically download or install them radio button if you want to be notified of the updates.

Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan once a week.

Other installed security software:

Your presently installed McAfee Internet Security, this automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advice and run a through scan with the Anti-Virus component once a week.

Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:

  • Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
  • Never open emails from unknown senders.
  • Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
  • Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.

Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript by Symantec or Script Defender by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Backup regularly:

You never know when your PC will become unstable or become so infected that you can't recover it. Follow this Microsoft article to learn how to backup. Follow this article by Microsoft to restore your backups.

Alternatively, you can use 3rd-party programs to back up your data. One example can be found at Bleeping Computer.

Avoid Peer to Peer software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of stuff, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice avoid these types of software applications.

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your PC will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Thanks for all of the tips and advice. I still had to hard power down and restart my machine as Windows wouldn't start. It was also making a weird churn and click noise a few times in a row??

I'm cleaning up and doing some of the work you outlined in your last post but I couldn't find where to download "OTMoveIt3" - can you provide a link?

Bad new I am afraid it is sounding very much like the main Hard-Drive is on its way out or very close to. I advise you backup any information such as files/folders/software etc you wish to keep as soon as possible.

Some backup methods from a previous post of mine:
Follow this Microsoft article to learn how to backup. Follow this article by Microsoft to restore your backups.

Alternatively, you can use 3rd-party programs to back up your data. One example can be found at Bleeping Computer.

Or you may wish to create backups to the external Hard-Drives you have.

As I deal primarily with Anti-Malware related issues which is the remit of the Malware Removal Forum I also advice the below:

If you wish to seek assistance with a view to the aforementioned Hard-Drive problem, the best advice I can give is to is create a account at one of the following forums and post in the appropriate section.
