.dll's caught by Scotty the watchdog

Unread postby lilbilly » January 3rd, 2009, 1:49 pm

Hello all! I Use Scotty the watchdog and recently am being bombarded with dll's requesting startup access. I can find them but can't delete them. This along with poor performance made me think of malware and your site. I hope you can help, and thanks in advance!

Unread postby DFW » January 4th, 2009, 5:36 pm

Hi lilbilly

My name is DFW, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Perform all actions in the order given.
Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
Please do not try and clean your computer with any tools other than the ones I ask you to use during the cleanup process.
If you fail to reply in 5 days period from now, this thread will close, and you will have to open another topic, and wait for another helper.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a different computer or infection.

First Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file.

When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Next Rename Highjackthis

Go to C Drive, Program Files, Trend Micro Folder, then Hijackthis folder, inside you will find HijackThis.exe, right click on it and rename it to seemenow.exe

Re: .dll's caught by Scotty the watchdog

Hi lilbilly

You are running a P2P filesharing programme/s.

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

BearShare

Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
We see no purpose in cleaning your machine if you use P2P programmes, as it is pretty much certain that if you continue to use them then you will get infected again.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red) NOW.

Post back confirming it has been removed so we can continue cleaning your system.

Hi lilbilly, well done.

  1. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  2. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
  3. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  4. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  5. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  6. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  7. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  8. Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
  9. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Please reboot your system

Next

Download and run Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. it tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Very Important!, before running Combofix Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".

This will be your McAfee, Winpatrol and Spyware Doctor

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.

Please Post back the log below so we can continue cleaning the system.

Re: .dll's caught by Scotty the watchdog

Unread postby DFW » January 5th, 2009, 3:14 pm

Hi lilbilly

I see you have Weatherbug installed, WeatherBug is a system tray icon that offers weather information and includes built-in ads. WeatherBug is controlled by AWS Convergence Technologies (weatherbugmedia.com). There is some controversy over whether WeatherBug should be targeted by anti-parasite software. AWS strongly deny their software is ‘spyware’, and by the definition used here, it is not, as it does not leak information back to its controlling servers.
However, WeatherBug has in the past been silently installed by the FavoriteMan parasite and Freeze.com screensavers, and more recently has been bundled by software such as AIM and Blubster. This makes it ‘unsolicited’, and since it is installed to raise money for its creators through the built-in ads it is certainly ‘commercial’. So it does meet the definition for ‘parasite’: unsolicited commercial software. It is nonetheless listed as a borderline case because it is not overtly harmful and many people do install it deliberately. WeatherBug bundles the MySearch parasite in its standalone distribution and has in the past, installed Gator and SVAPlayer.

I recommend that you uninstall WeatherBugand choose one of these alternatives:
Weather Pulse
Weather Watcher

Please Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

    Remove WeatherBug Installer

Also remove MProtector if still present

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) .
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment JRE 6 Update 7 allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

These

Java(TM) 6 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Open up Hijackthis
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present)

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: kzdain.dll

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked

COMBOFIX-Script
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kzdain.dll

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.

This will be your McAfee, Winpatrol and Spyware Doctor

  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file.

Some info on the KasperLog:

-The final item (J:\Installs\alogger.exe) is an install program for a key/event logger. I was using this at one point and stupidly forgot to delete the install file. This is now deleted
-The D drive is a seperate internal drive that is never used. I had it installed with Windows XP Pro (c: is windows xp media) hoping I could run a program with it that wouldn't run on Media version.

Thanks for the info on "J:\Installs\alogger.exe, as long as you know about it and what it does, thats fine.

Clean out Java Cache to clear item in the online scan

Go to start, Settings, then Control Panel, in the control panel double click on the java icon, on the
general tab click settings, the tempory files settings box will pop up, click on delete to clean out the java cache.

With the above done you clean, we just need to clean up now

UNINSTALL COMBOFIX

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Image
You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

I would Keep ATF cleaner amd run often to keep your system clear of unwanted files, also keep Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed,
keep it updated and run weekly scans to help keep your system clean, but you can run it any time you need.

Also keep your Spyware Doctor and SpywareBlaster updated

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this site. http://surfthenetsafely.com/ieseczone8.htm

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Just post back and let me know all went well with the above
