Hello Peter_41,

Ok, let use the big guns.

All protections programs must be disabled before you run Combofix.

I want you also to disable any additional program you have running on start-up like:
MemBoost
Software Informer

And any other program which is not needed to run on start-up, so we prevent Combofix to run on your pc.

It might be a good idea if you get rid of some of those programs, as they are too much for a pc, and it's overloaded with un-necessary programs.
----------------------------------------------
Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Re: CA Security Suite wont remove Unpdoor H Trojan

Unread postby chryssi2001 » January 4th, 2009, 1:37 pm

Hello Peter_41

Ok, let use the big guns.

All protection programs must be disabled before you run Combofix.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

I explained at the start of my previous post that all protection programs should be disabled, and there was another warning in my Combofix instructions, see both above.
Despite both warnings your Combofix report shows that both your Anti-Virus and firewall were running the same time Combofix run.

AV: CA Anti-Virus *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated)
FW: CA Personal Firewall *enabled*

----------------------------------------------
I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you.

Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

More information here

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to Disconnect from Internet, Re-Format the entire drive and re-install your Operating system and Applications.

The Decision Whether to ReFormat or Not should be based on:
  • The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
  • The variety of malware - this influences the decision on whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect. IN THIS CASE we have a backdoor, the worst kind.
If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.
A useful link which explains how to ReFormat and Re-Install, is here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

Your best option is to reformat this pc.
----------------------------------------------
REFORMAT & REINSTALL

Please make sure that you know what to do before beginning the operation.

Here are a few links that propably help.
You can Print all these information, so you have them handy.

When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?
Windows XP Clean install

Then there are a couple of things you should do immediately after installing Windows and before surfing the net...
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
Here are some free Anti Virus programs which i recommend to use:
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
Here are some free Firewalls which i recommend to use:
(Use only one, and disable your Windows Firewall)
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software.
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here
  • Install WinPatrol
    Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Good Luck!

Hi again,

I'm taking your advice tomorrow, but am curious as to the suitability of my Computer Associates "Internet Security Suite 2009" - was it money poorly spent, or solely my doing (through downloading) or is it not up to the task?

Once I complete this reinstall, should I send a report to you?

Thanks once again,

Hello Peter_41,

I'm taking your advice tomorrow

Good, that's the best for your pc.

But am curious as to the suitability of my Computer Associates "Internet Security Suite 2009" - was it money poorly spent, or solely my doing (through downloading) or is it not up to the task?

I am not famliar with CA Internet Security, so i can't tell.
You can google and see if others do have problems with it.
If you believe you are not satisfied, when it expires you can install another Anti-Virus, plus an extra firewall. Tell me if you need links for possible future use, and i will be glad to give you some. There are some good free Anti-Virus & Firewall programs you can use.

I can't tell if you are to blame because you downloaded something bad. :(

I want you to understand something first.
Whatever Anti-Virus, you use, either a complete Internet Security suite with firewall or not, you are never fully protected against malware.

Anti-Virus suits, covers virusses, but these days, malware is too tough, and has it's own ways to sneak into users' pc's. Having additional spyware programs, not too many, to scan and check your pc often, is also needed.

Avoiding downloading stuff from unknown sites, visiting suspicious sites, opening emails sent to you from unknown persons, using P2P programs to download various programs or music etc, would keep your pc in a more healthy state.

Once I complete this reinstall, should I send a report to you?

No need to do so, all is going to be well after you re-install your system.
The baddies will go away.

Let me know if you need something more, or i will close this thread.

Good luck :)
