Hijacked Search Engine Results Pages

Hello there,

When I conduct a search with Yahoo or Google (whether through the browser's search bar or directly on http://www.yahoo.com or http://www.google.com), the search engine result pages are obviously hijacked or redirected. I should mention that it appears to only affect Yahoo and Google; searches conducted in Lycos or Ask appear normal.

First clue the pages are being hijacked/ redirected: It takes the computer considerably longer than normal to display search engine results.

Second clue: The titles and descriptions that normally appear do not match the displayed web address. It's pretty obvious for well known websites. For example, a search for "McAfee" displays...

In addition, I installed McAfee Site Advisor today after this problem started. It has worked intermittently since installation. When it does work, the results page appears as normal. Site Advisor works consistently for Ask results.

My name is Carolyn and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Hi,

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:

• Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
• If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
• If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version :

• Open Spybot S&D
• Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
• Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
• then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
• If your firewall raises a question, say OK
• In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
• OK any prompts.
• Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
• Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Disable MS Defender until the computer is clean

Microsoft Defender normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

- Open Windows Defender
- Select Tools and then General Settings
- Under Real Time Protection Options uncheck Turn on real-time protection
- Select Save
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop. Double-click Goored.exe to run it. Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter. A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called Goored.txt). Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.

Step 1


Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.

• When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt
• Save both reports to your desktop.

Step 2

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

1. Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All....
2. Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
3. Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
4. Click Next. It will start extracting.
5. Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.

Double click on gmer.exe to run it. It will start running a scan. If it detects rootkit activity, you will receive a prompt to run a full scan. Click Yes.

• When done, you may receive another notice. Click OK.
• Click on Save ... to save a log.
• Copy and paste in Gmer.txt and click Save.
• Close Gmer.

If you receive no notice, click on the Scan button.

• It will start scanning again.
• When done, click on Save ... to save a log.
• Copy and paste in Gmer.txt and click Save.
• Close Gmer.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
