Unread postby rebecca_l » December 31st, 2008, 4:38 pm

Like a lot of other people, I seem to be having a problem with pop-ups, mostly from sagipsul.com. I've run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, but am still getting these pop-ups. The HijackThis file is attached. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks, guys!

Hi rebecca_l,
You have a Vundo infection, and the installation of three AntiVirus applications.
Multiple antivirus programs will cause poor protection and system instability.

You have all or parts of Norton(Symantec), Avast, and Grisoft AVG7.
If Avast is the one you want to keep, please use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel to Uninstall all Norton and Symantec programs, and also Uninstall AVG 7
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy (Ctrl-C)and paste (Ctrl-V) the log contents in a reply.

Please do not submit the log as an attachment.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder. In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish. Please copy and paste the contents into your next reply.
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.

So we are loking for
  • Any notes on success or difficulty Uninstalling two of the three antivirus programs
  • a fresh HiJackThis log
  • the HiJackThis Uninstall list

I ended up uninstalling Avast! and AVG because Symantec required an Uninstall Password.

rebecca_l,
We need to get rid of Spybot's TeaTimer.
It will destroy every effort to clean up your computer.
Did you just remove Spybot? It shows as a running process but not as an installed program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel(XP)
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Advertisement Service
Adobe Reader 7.0.9

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Stop Process
Close ALL open windows. Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete together to bring up the task manager.
Under the processes tab, if it is visible, check the box 'Show processes from all users'.
Highlight Teatimer.exe if it shows, and "End Process":
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the Scanner http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
(XP) Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
(Vista) Right click on RSIT.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Default location for both files is C:\rsit\ )

Re: Annoying Sagipsul Pop-up

Unread postby rebecca_l » January 1st, 2009, 6:06 pm

About a month ago, my laptop was stolen. When it was returned to me, I found several viruses and malware, most of which were removed by MalwareBytes. I thought I had removed all of it (including SpyBot Search & Destroy) fully, but obviously I haven't...

I was able to remove all 3 programs with little problem.

The first time I tried to stop Teatimer.exe, it wasn't listed. After a reboot recommended by MalwareBytes, it was listed and I stopped the process.

MalwareBytes found several files that I thought I had removed before, several trojan.vundo files and a couple of trojan.downloader files.

rebecca_l,
Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Do not panic if your antivirus software warns you about the file. Just allow it to download.
Please disable your antivirus software BEFORE running ComboFix!!
If you don't know how to disable your antivirus, stop and ask.
  • Download ComboFix from here and save it to your desktop
  • Disable ALL running antivirus/antimalware programs before proceeding!
In your case, this should work:
    Disabling NORTON ANTIVIRUS
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for the Symantec/Norton icon.
    * right-click it -> choose "Disable Auto-Protect."
    * select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
    * click "Ok."
    * a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled.
You have succesfully disabled the Norton Antivirus Guard.
  • Now start ComboFix
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • Click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running! Please be patient.
  • When finished, the report will open. Post the log into your next reply and then reenable your protection software
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, disconnect the cable you use to connect to the internet and then plug it back in.

Hi, thanks for your help so far, but I think we might have run into a wall: I'm not able to change any settings on Symantec. I tried to find another way to do so, but I'm afraid that any changes would have to be made to my entire server, not the individual computer... :(

rebecca_l,
Ok.
Please check the picture at the bottom of Quietman's post here about Symantec Endpoint Protection, and see whether you can right click the yellow shield in the system tray. If you can, disable it and follow my previous instructions.

Failing that:
I am assuming that you did download Combofix and you have it on your desktop.
Please run a new HiJackThis log, post it here, and don't reboot your machine until I reply.

rebecca_l,
Thanks for the info.
Please Uninstall Spybot S&D.

Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and run a scan. Have it remove everything it finds, and then post its latest log.

reboot and Post a new HijackThis log

rebecca_l,
Thanks for the info. Sorry this is so long.

Please Uninstall Spybot S&D.

------------------------------------------------------------
Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
Save it to your desktop
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    Code: Select all
    :files
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\litinika.dll

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [tejorufuta] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\litinika.dll",s (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [tejorufuta] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\litinika.dll",s (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.

Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and run a scan. Have it remove everything it finds, and then post its latest log.

reboot and Post a new HijackThis log

Please post the OTMoveIt log, The Malwarebytes log, and the new HiJackThis log.
