system.exe, autorun.inf appearing on USB-connected devices

Unread postby steve-k » December 30th, 2008, 10:41 pm

Hi, thanks in advance for whatever help you folks can provide.

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, Service Pack 1
Anti-Virus: Avast! version 4.8 Home Edition

This morning, I connected my mp3 player via USB to my machine. Avast immediately displayed a warning about the autorun.inf file which had magically appeared in the device's root directory. It displayed no notification about the system.exe file which also appeared there. I deleted both files, but a few moments later they both appeared again. I considered performing a system restore, as Windows installed an update yesterday (12/29) morning, and this problem did not show up until today (12/30). But before I do that, before I make any attempts to blindly troubleshoot, or even restart my machine, I thought I'd better check with the experts rather than risk any further damage.

Below, I've pasted the contents of a hijackthis.log file generated by Trend Micro Hijack This v2.0.2.

Please let me know if there's any other information I can provide to help you help me!

Many thanks,
Steve

Re: system.exe, autorun.inf appearing on USB-connected devices

Unread postby davis » January 3rd, 2009, 12:02 am

Hi steve-k,

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to start > control panel > programs and features. Right click on each instance of the following and remove it.

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player.

After that, please do the following:

Step1

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on launch.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.
  • When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
(This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

In your next reply, please post back

1.Dr.Web.cvs report
2.RSIT log.txt

Tell me how your pc is running now.

Thanks again, davis.
I've done the following:

1. removed Viewpoint Media Player

2. performed Dr. Web CureIt complete scan. Two viruses were found and deleted. The DrWeb.csv text is below. I have replaced a string of characters with asterisks -- the original characters were part of (but not all of) one of my passwords, which I thought was kind of strange... I'll be changing that password.

3. run RSIT again. log.txt is below.

I've connected a USB device, and the system is not copying those two files to the device anymore. I'd like to think means everything is fixed, but I'll wait for the thumbs up from you. Thanks again for your help, and let me know if there are any other steps I need to take.

Re: system.exe, autorun.inf appearing on USB-connected devices

Unread postby davis » January 4th, 2009, 12:48 pm

Hi steve-k,

the system is not copying those two files to the device anymore...

:thumbright:

We need to do another check to ensure you're virus-free. Until then, you are good to go. Please be patient and do the following:

Step1

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name and the following update.
      Java(TM) 6 Update 5
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Step2

Let's clean some temp files. Please do the following:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step3

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner.

  1. Please go to Kaspersky Online Scanner and perform an online antivirus scan.
  2. Click Accept button on the "Requirements and limitations".
  3. When Java warning " The applcation digital signature has been verified. Do you want to run the application " appears, Click on "Run" button.
  4. It will be Downloading and installing the program and Updating the database.
  5. When Updating the database have finished, click on Settings.
  6. Make sure all boxes are checked. then click on the Save button.
  7. Click on My Computer under Scan menu. It will start scanning, so be patient and let it run.
  8. Once the scan is completed, Click on View Scan Report.
  9. You may see a list of infected items over there. Click on Save Report As.
  10. Click "Desktop" , Name the file as "KAS", Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) and Click on Save button.
  11. Please post the contents in your next reply.
  12. You can refer to this animation

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post back the logs in your next reply.

Unread postby steve-k » January 5th, 2009, 3:47 am

Once again, thanks for your help. I've done the following:

1. Removed the older version of Java, and installed JRE 6 Update 11

2. Run ATF cleaner

3. Run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. KAS.txt is below. I've replaced some folder and file names with asterisks for privacy's sake.

4. Run RSIT again. log.txt is below.

Things seem to be running fine, though I'd like to get rid of all the threats listed in KAS.txt if possible. None of those files are necessary; they're all out-dated backups. Will simply deleting these files be enough, or are there more detailed steps I should take?

Thanks!

Hi steve-k,

You can delete all infected items manually or empty the contents in Eudora mailbox as you wish. Please delete the files or folder in the following filepath in bold.

C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm\Eudora\attach\card.zip
C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm\Eudora\Out.mbx.001
C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm\Eudora\Out.mbx.002
H:\BACKUPS

and the following filepath which maybe had been censored by someone.

H:\*****\Attach\*****@*****.com
H:\*****\Attach\*****.com3.zip

After that, Post a fresh HJT log and tell me how you pc is running now.

Thanks davis. We don't use Eudora anymore, so I've manually deleted all those files (both the Eudora files and the older Mozilla files). Things still seem to be working fine. Once again, thanks a ton for your help. Here's my latest HijackThis log file:

Re: system.exe, autorun.inf appearing on USB-connected devices

Unread postby davis » January 5th, 2009, 3:22 pm

Hi steve-k,

The log looks good. Any issue left? If not, Let's do some housecleaning.

Please delete the Dr.Web ,RSIT, and the folder in C:\rsit

Now that your system is clean, kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - You should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

    1. Click the Start Button.
    2. From the Start menu click Control panel.
    3. In Control Panel click the System Icon.
    4. On the Left of the System properties window you will see a list of Tasks, click on the System protection link.
    5. In the System Protection window remove the 'Tick' mark from beside the drive you want to disable system restore on.
    6. A message will now appear asking: 'Are you sure you want to turn System restore off'.
    7. Press the Turn System restore Off button.
    8. System Restore will now be turned off permanently on that particular drive.
    9. To re-enable system restore just click your mouse in the box next to the drive you require system restore to monitor ( a tick will appear in the box), then click the Apply button and system restore will resume monitoring the drive. This will remove all restore points and make a new one.

  2. Update your antivirus programs

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
    Secunia Software Inspector
    F-secure Health Check

  3. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

I don't see any firewall in your HijackThis log, so i assume you use Windows Vista firewall. Windows Vista includes a two-way firewall that has outbound filtering disabled by default. The best explanation was that it was too complicated for end-users to use so they had that feature turned off as well as hidden.
To get started, just click on the Start Button and key in wf.msc and hit Enter. This will bring up the comprehensive Windows Firewall with Advanced Security management interface. 6. Install a-squared Free -a-squared free is a product from Emsi Software provided free for private use that can detect and remove a variety of malicious software. If you have a dialup internet connection, you may also like to install a-squared Anti-Dialer which provides some real time protection against premium rate dialers
