Unread postby amash » December 12th, 2008, 6:18 pm

Hello,

I have a very slow start up. And today I'm not getting my desktop to start. all i see is the wall paper. i hit ctrl alt delete to go to task manager and access firefox browser.
there was a trojan installed in this laptop compac v3000 presario on XP, sometime ago. i have downloaded various anti spy anti virus like avg, adaware, yahoo anti spy and windows defender. i thought i removed all spyware but now not sure.
is the malware related to the start up being so slow and now not working?
please find below my hijak this log.

thank you in advance for your advice.

Hi! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is John Brouwer - if it helps, you can call me John for short. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

These rules are good for you to know:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • If you don't reply within five days after my last instructions this topic will be closed. If you will not be able to reply within five days please tell me so the topic will not be closed.

These rules are to make my voluntary work more comfortable:
  • Please be patient. The work I do is voluntary and I also have a private life (school, work, friends and hobbies).
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Also, don't post logs as attachments. Other helpers like to view the logs as well and opening a lot of attachments is irritating. It can also contain malware.

Finally, please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Open The Misc Tool Section button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop and post the contents in a reply to this topic. Also post a new HijackThis log.

Regards,
John.

Re: start up very slow and now, no startup bar and desktop icons

Unread postby John B. » December 20th, 2008, 2:45 pm

Hi,

There are a couple of things I want to check.

You aren't running Anti Virus and Firewall Software. Please download and install one of them first!!!

Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Here are some Anti Virus products which are free for personal use and most used:
AntiVir
Avast

Here are some really good paid programs which you can buy online or in a shop nearby:
ESET NOD32
Kaspersky Anti-Virus or Kaspersky Internet Security with Firewall included

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - Using a Firewall on your computer can be very important. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. There are some different situations you can be in where a third-party firewall may or may not be a good addition to your system:
  • If you are not using Windows XP or Vista, but an older version I recommend you to use a firewall.
  • If you are using Windows XP or Vista, but are on dial-up I recommend you to use a firewall.
  • If you are using Windows XP or Vista and are using broadband, but are not experienced in using firewalls and getting the choice to allow or disallow things I recommend you to use Windows Firewall.
  • If you are using Windows XP or Vista, are using broadband and experienced, I recommend you to disable Windows Firewall (as it is not perfect) and get a third-party firewall.

Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:
Kerio Personal Firewall (Free version after 30 days)
Online Armor Free

Or you could buy their paid version online or in a shop nearby:
Kerio Personal Firewall (Continue paid version after 30 days)
Online Armor or Online Armor AV+ with Anti-Virus included

As you did this, we can begin with the fix.

Step 1: Upload malware for scanning
I'd like you to check a file for malware.
C:\Program Files\ViRsLab\ViRsLab.exe

  • Copy/Paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Save the complete results in a Notepad/Word document on your desktop.

Step 2: Remove old versions of Java
Here is how to:
  • Download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Step 3: Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step 4: Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
I see you already have it on your computer, so let's use it:
  • Start the program.
  • Make sure you update so that it is using the newest definitions and contains least bugs.
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Close the Notepad file.
  • The log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Step 5: Post logs
Please post the following logs in a reply to this topic (use multiple posts if needed):
  • Tell me more about your problem(s)
  • Fresh HijackThis log
  • Virustotal/Jotti results
  • MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware log

Regards,
John.

Thank you again John.

I downloaded Avast anti virus software as per your suggestion.
I had deleted AVG anti virus and Lavasoft Adaware in between my first and second hijackthis logs that i posted here. I am guessing once I have a trojan, it can infect your antivirus. AVG and adaware kept telling me I had a trojan after each scan but it was never corrected.
What did happen was my Google searches were being redirected to different websites (mostly online shopping sites i never heard of). I uninstalled AVG and Lavasoft. uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it. I downloaded Spybot search and destroy as per some advice on this website. it is running in the background. so now my laptop seems to be working ok, but i'm not 100% sure.
I have reinstalled Lavasoft adaware and also have windows defender and CA yahoo anti spy installed too. And now Avast. perhaps i have to uninstall some of these programs or should i leave them in?

Also, i'm not too sure how to use a firewall, so maybe i will keep windows firewall. is it absolutely necessary to get a third party firewall? i have one laptop at home with a wireless router to a DSL telephone line for internet.

i appreciate further advice on firewall.

i could not get you the analysis on the C:\Program Files\ViRsLab\ViRsLab.exe that you asked me to do as i cant find its location when i browse my folders.

Re: start up very slow and now, no startup bar and desktop icons

Unread postby John B. » December 21st, 2008, 8:56 am

Hi amash,

I had deleted AVG anti virus and Lavasoft Adaware in between my first and second hijackthis logs that i posted here. I am guessing once I have a trojan, it can infect your antivirus. AVG and adaware kept telling me I had a trojan after each scan but it was never corrected.

They keep telling you, because they were not able to remove it so it kept being on your system. This is what an Anti-Virus program mostly is for, to notify you that you are infected. If they cannot remove it, which most of the time they can't, they will keep telling you..

What did happen was my Google searches were being redirected to different websites (mostly online shopping sites i never heard of).

In what browsers did this happen?

I have reinstalled Lavasoft adaware and also have windows defender and CA yahoo anti spy installed too. And now Avast. perhaps i have to uninstall some of these programs or should i leave them in?

I recommend that you keep Lavasoft and Windows Defender. With CA Yahoo Anti-Spy I am not familiar and having that program as well may affect the speed of your computer. Lavasoft and Windows Defender both have a real-time protection function. That function of Lavasoft Ad-Aware is not the main purpose (main purpose of Ad-Aware is to scan now and then), but that of Windows Defender is its main purpose. You can disable the real-time function of Lavasoft Ad-Aware if you want to:
  • On your desktop, click Start.
  • Choose Run.
  • Type services.msc in the open box and click OK or press Enter.
  • Scroll down the list of services and double-click Ad-Aware 2007 Service.
  • In the service properties window that opens, click the STOP button.
  • Under Startup Type, use the pull down menu and select Manual from the list of options.
  • Click OK and exit the Services Control Manager.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Also, i'm not too sure how to use a firewall, so maybe i will keep windows firewall. is it absolutely necessary to get a third party firewall? i have one laptop at home with a wireless router to a DSL telephone line for internet.

A router and Windows Firewall is pretty sufficient. I understand that if you are not sure how to use it you do not want it.

i could not get you the analysis on the C:\Program Files\ViRsLab\ViRsLab.exe that you asked me to do as i cant find its location when i browse my folders.

Well, that means it must be a left-over. Do you know the program ViRsLab? Have you removed it?

Today I want you to do a rootkit scan, because MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware found a rootkit.

Download Gmer to your Desktop and unzip it to your Desktop.
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Disconnect from internet and close running programs, especially programs like Spybot and Ad-Aware and their real-time functions.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double click gmer.exe.
Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say Ok.
If no warning....
Click the rootkit tab
To the right of the program you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked... leave everything checked. Then click the Scan button. Wait for the scan to finish.
Once done click the Copy button.
Open Notepad and hit ctrl+v to paste the log. Save the log to your desktop please.

Please post the Gmer log.

Regards,
John.

Hi John,

thanks for the replies. and seasons greetings by the way.

i haven't purchased an anti virus. lavasoft is the free version and i use it to scan once in a while.
yahoo anti spy is free and comes with yahoo toolbar on my explorer.

the issue i had with google redirects was initially with firefox, then with explorer. i was surfing some dodgy websites at the time, so i think i got a spyware. i uninstalled firefox and reinstalled. no problems since.

i have avast anti virus and spybot search and destroy (free ware) running in the background. i am seriously thinking of purchasing a security suite. i like CA as i have it at work and it seems to be quite fast and efficient.

i think my biggest worry is now very slow start up. i have gone to servicemsc as you suggested and stopped other tasks like apple ipod and apple itunes runnig automatically. i hope this speeds up my start up.

with regards to VirsLAB, i dont know what it was and how and when i removed it. i also had several dodgy looking anti spy and anti virus files which were in my control panel. i think my girlfriend played around too muchand downloaded those nasties. i removed them. so far so good.

Hi,

the issue i had with google redirects was initially with firefox, then with explorer. i was surfing some dodgy websites at the time, so i think i got a spyware. i uninstalled firefox and reinstalled. no problems since.

Please use some search engines like Google a couple of times and make sure the problem has really gone away.

i have avast anti virus and spybot search and destroy (free ware) running in the background. i am seriously thinking of purchasing a security suite. i like CA as i have it at work and it seems to be quite fast and efficient.

Sure, CA is good. I also recommend Kaspersky (either with or without firewall).

i think my biggest worry is now very slow start up. i have gone to servicemsc as you suggested and stopped other tasks like apple ipod and apple itunes runnig automatically. i hope this speeds up my start up.

Never told you to stop random services, did I? Only that of Ad-Aware.

Try stopping a couple of your anti-spyware programs like Ad-Aware and Spybot and see how that speeds up your computer. Here is how to:
  • On your desktop, click Start.
  • Choose Run.
  • Type services.msc in the open box and click OK or press Enter.
  • Scroll down the list of services and double-click Ad-Aware 2007 Service.
  • In the service properties window that opens, click the STOP button.
  • Under Startup Type, use the pull down menu and select Manual from the list of options.
  • Click OK and exit the Services Control Manager.

First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot

  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • Click Save
  • Close Windows Defender

For Yahoo Anti-Spyware I do not know how to do this, but check the settings of it and you will probably see an option to dis-/enable real-time protection or dis-/enable automatically starting it at startup

Reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

Also take a look at these things. For example reformatting your computer can speed it up a lot!
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=34484

Please remove that ViRsLab entry:
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside the item listed below (if present):

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ViRsLab] "C:\Program Files\ViRsLab\ViRsLab.exe"

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Please let me know if disabling those programs helped speeding up and if the link helped. Also tell me about any other problems you still have with the computer. Last but not least, post a new uninstall log (told you how to do this in my welcome speech) and a new HijackThis log (the initial log you had to post).

Regards,
John.

i stopped the anti virus software as per your suggestion and i did notice a quicker start up. however, shut down takes over 1 minute. and when i start up and click on firefox, it takes about 2-3 minutes to load... i will reinstall firefox. but i also noticed MS Word taking a long time to start. i don't know. i think i will reinstall firefox and see how it goes. this is the only browser i am using. i have been surfing some websites which constantly pop up other websites. avast anti virus has detected stuff and stopped it from loading. but i think something must have got through again, recently.

I now only have AVAST operating in the background. do i need to turn back on defender, lavasoft and tea-timer?

===============================================================================================
yes i again found virslab in the hijack this scan. i removed it as per your instruction. firefox opened in a flash afterwards...

virslab must be a spy from the bad porn/video websites i visit. i should really stop visiting these sites.

is there any way to stop the pop ups in firefox?

Re: start up very slow and now, no startup bar and desktop icons

Unread postby John B. » December 30th, 2008, 12:19 pm

Hi,

First thing, do i need to have SP3 installed? i installed it recently and now others tell me that it wasn't necessary. sorry if i have asked you this question before.

It is not very wise to install SP3 while you are infected, but certainly recommended to do that afterwards. I see you already have it now, so there is not turning back, but in rare cases the malware will conflict with the service pack. 'Others' must be wrong, because SP3 is just the newest version, so the safest, and even though it does contain a lot of updates that you installed before, there are also new updates.

i am again having issues with google search displaying search results for weird/differnet websites.

i stopped the anti virus software as per your suggestion and i did notice a quicker start up. however, shut down takes over 1 minute. and when i start up and click on firefox, it takes about 2-3 minutes to load... i will reinstall firefox. but i also noticed MS Word taking a long time to start. i don't know. i think i will reinstall firefox and see how it goes. this is the only browser i am using. i have been surfing some websites which constantly pop up other websites. avast anti virus has detected stuff and stopped it from loading. but i think something must have got through again, recently.

yes i again found virslab in the hijack this scan. i removed it as per your instruction. firefox opened in a flash afterwards...

Noted.

I now only have AVAST operating in the background. do i need to turn back on defender, lavasoft and tea-timer?

Please do not do anything but what I tell you ;)

virslab must be a spy from the bad porn/video websites i visit. i should really stop visiting these sites.

Please try to find a clean website, because we do not want to see people come back over and over again. This is an interesting site to find information about how clean a website it:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/
Also just take a look on what you click before you do it. The URL is always displayed on the bottom of the screen and gives a lot of information about where you will go if you click. Use the brains you got.

is there any way to stop the pop ups in firefox?

We'll try to make it all stop :)

Step 1: Disable Windows Defender
Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix. To disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • Click Save
  • Close Windows Defender
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

Step 2: Download and Run ComboFix
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. For information on how to disable your anti virus program please see this:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

If your have Avast as anti virus an additional thing has to be changed to make ComboFix work properly:
Image

Go on with the ComboFix guide when it opens its log please close it.

Remember that the ComboFix log is saved here: C:\ComboFix.txt

Step 3: Post logs
Please post the following logs in a reply to this topic:
  • New HJT log
  • ComboFix log

Regards,
John.
