I can't remove Smitfraud-C and Virtumonde variants

Unread postby riverwatcher » December 27th, 2008, 7:16 pm

I don't know how my machine got infected but I get multiple advertising windows now when I log on, and slow performance.

My isp techs suggested downloading Spybot Search and Destroy, which I did, and after carefully following fixing instructions several times with several reboots, Spybot rescans continue to show Smitfraud-C, Virtumonde, Virtumonde.generic, and Virtumonde.sci still are present.

McAfee scans say the computer is clean and protected.

Also, I can't turn on the Microsoft updates.

This is very frustrating. Five days a week at my job I'm a graphic designer who works on Macs. (Nobody bothers to write malware for older - pre-Intel macs.) The only thing I use this WXP machine at home is to read email and download photos from MY digital cameras. The only programs I use regularly are Photoshop and QuarkXpress. PCs are very confusing.

Please help.

Below is my Hijackthis log.

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is peku006and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.
I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

1 - Scan With ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

2 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the ComboFix log(C:\ComboFix.txt)
2. a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
