Search Hijacked

Unread postby Flipper » December 21st, 2008, 2:19 am

I believe my search engines have been hijacked. Everytime I put in something to search in any search engine, "spam" type sites show up as the results. Also, I noticed when I do google search, the bottom left of my browser (the part which has status messages) sometimes says "waiting for 1.2.3.0". (I'm guessing something is redirecting my request).

Here is my hijackthis log:

Hi Flipper,

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
ipconfig /all >> temp.txt
FOR /F "tokens=*" %%i IN (temp.txt) DO (
Echo. %%i | find "Physical Address" > nul
IF ERRORLEVEL 1 echo.%%i >> IPcheck.txt
)
del temp.txt
del %0

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called IPcheck.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Gmer to your Desktop from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip
  • Unzip the program onto your Desktop (right-click, select Extract All... and follow the prompts)
  • Disconnect from the internet and close all running programs
  • Double click gmer.exe, let the gmer.sys driver load if asked
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say OK
  • If there is no warning, then check that the Rootkit tab is selected and click the Scan button - don't change any settings before you do so
  • Please do not use your computer during the scan
  • Once the scan is complete, click the Copy button
  • Open Notepad (Click Start->Run, type notepad and Enter) and hit Ctrl+V to paste the log and then save the log to your desktop

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Gmer report and both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

Hi Flipper,

Please try searching in both Internet Explorer and Firefox and let me know whether the problem is isolated to one browser or affects both.

Is your machine connected to the internet through a router?
Are you familiar with the management features of the router?

Does the modem have a web-interface for setup?
If so, are you familiar with it?

I looked at the back of the dsl modem and it said to type the following URL: http://192.168.0.1 and it brought up some info. Any particular thing you are interested in looking at?

Yes, that's the web interface I was referring to.
I would like you to check for any information on DNS server addresses.
If you can't find this, tell me the make and model number of your modem and I'll try to find some directions.

Also, please tell me if you have recently removed any malware from your machine, and how it was dealt with.

I used ewido (don't know if I spelled it right) online and it deleted some malware. When this didn't solve the problem I then posted in this board.

Don't know if below answers the infomation. There is an "advanced" page which has other stuff (connection configuration, ppp location, statistics, log, etc)

I can copy/paste some info from the "Connection Information" page:
IP Address 76.204.31.213
IP Gateway 151.164.184.115
DNS Servers 68.94.156.1 dnsr1.sbcglobal.net

Mode PPP on the modem (Public IP for LAN device)

Modem Name SpeedStream

Hi Flipper,

That's exactly what I was after :thumbright: it looks fine so it's not the problem here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:
reg export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions" "%userprofile%\desktop\firefox.txt"
A new file called firefox.txt should appear on your Desktop, please post the contents with your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both of these options:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full Scan, then click Scan.
  • Make sure all hard drives are selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When finished, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your Desktop, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found here if you need it:
    • Start->All Programs->Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware->Logs

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the firefox.txt output and the Malwarebytes Antimalware report along with a new HijackThis log.

BTW -- After doing the above, I ran a search on google on both IE and Firefox for a common term like "CNN" and it did return valid results.

Hi,

Good to hear things are running better :)

Malwarebytes Antimalware appears to have targeted a file associated with your AVG Antivirus program, I believe this is a false positive so I would like you to restore it as follows:

Open Malwarebytes Antimalware and select the Quarantine tab
Highlight the entry with this under Items:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\avgrsstx.dll
Then press Restore

Please then upload the file so I can double-check:

Please open this page in your browser:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit- ... channel=32

Fill in the link to topic field with a link to this topic
Copy/paste the following into the Browse to the file you want to submit field:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\avgrsstx.dll
Then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 11) from here

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:
reg export "HKLM\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32" "%userprofile%\desktop\drivers32.txt"
A new file called drivers32.txt should appear on your Desktop, please post the contents with your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the drivers32.txt output and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know if you had any difficulties with the instructions.
