Search Engine Results Being Redirected

Unread postby mKirby1321 » December 21st, 2008, 12:11 am

Hello guys, the title pretty much says it all. All my results are being redirected to some random sites. The title will say the right stuff like "ign.com" or "nbc.com" but the url under it will be different. I get the feeling there is more wrong with my computer but this problem is apparent and very annoying. I am connected to the internet through a linksys router.

Heres my HJT log file

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is peku006and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.
I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

1 - Scan With ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

2 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the ComboFix log(C:\ComboFix.txt)
2. a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

Thank you peku for responding. I'm just running into a slight problem. On the ComboFix guide on step 3 in the windows recovery console section, when i drag the windows recovery console icon onto the combofix icon i get the loading bar but at the end it says installation failed and then closes all my windows and the combofix blue command window comes up and says "ComboFix is preparing to run". I left this on for more than an hour and it did not do anything. Should i continue with the guide or is it essential to have the Windows recovery console installed.

Thank you again

Hi mKirby1321

OK, don't worry about Combofix, we'll try a different tool:

1 - download and run RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt<- (will be maximized) and info.txt<- (will be minimized)

2 - Status Check
Please reply with

1.the logs from RSIT (log.txt ,info.txt)

Thanks peku006

Hi mKirby1321

1- uninstall ComboFix

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

2 - uninstall some programs

    1. click on start
    2. then go to settings
    3. after that you need control panel
    4. look for the icon add/remove programs
    click on the following programs

    OIN Search

    and click on remove

1 - Remove bad HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

      O2 - BHO: PCTools Site Guard - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYWAR~1\tools\iesdsg.dll (file missing)
      O3 - Toolbar: OIN Search - {B9F6E8EB-A4E3-478E-88A4-D3995B5C45C8} - C:\Program Files\OIN Search\OINSearch.dll
      O3 - Toolbar: Internet Service - {94A5C93F-BD18-4C46-B777-C94C145C3CAB} - C:\Program Files\Applications\iebr.dll (file missing)
      O23 - Service: IISZZFM - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\ken\LOCALS~1\Temp\IISZZFM.exe (file missing)
      O23 - Service: MPGEAWUAMJRHGS - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\ken\LOCALS~1\Temp\MPGEAWUAMJRHGS.exe (file missing)

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

3 - Download and run OTMoveIt3

  • Download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer from here and save it to your desktop
  • Launch OTMoveIt3.exe and copy the text from the codebox below into the lefthand box below "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved"
    Code: Select all
    :files
    C:\Program Files\OIN Search
    C:\DOCUME~1\ken\LOCALS~1\Temp\IISZZFM.exe
    C:\DOCUME~1\ken\LOCALS~1\Temp\MPGEAWUAMJRHGS.exe

    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
    "{B9F6E8EB-A4E3-478E-88A4-D3995B5C45C8}"-

    :Services
    IISZZFM
    MPGEAWUAMJRHGS

  • Double-check that the input matches the code box above and then click the MoveIt! button to start the script. If you're prompted about rebooting allow the request.
  • Once OTMoveIt finishes, a log will be located at C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss. (mmddyyyy_hhmmss is a timestamp from when the log was created)
  • Include this log in your next reply

4 - Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • The log can also be found here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

5 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

6 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the OTMoveIt3 log
2. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log
3. a fresh HijackThis log
How is the computer running now?

Thanks peku006

:( I'm running into another problem, on step two i removed OIN search and the process completed so i closed the window. But it was still on the add/remove programs list so i clicked remove again and a window came up saying

"An error occurred while trying to remove OIN search. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove OIN Search from the Add or Remove programs list?"

I clicked yes as iv seen this before but then another error window comes up saying

"You do not have sufficient access to remove OIN Search from the Add or Remove Programs list. Please contact your system administrator."

This one i had not ever seen before. I'm not sure if i should continue or make sure OIN search is cleared completely off my computer. Sorry for all these roadblocks but because Christmas i probably wont be able to get back to these forums until very late Thursday night or Friday the 26th.

Happy holidays!
Thanks again
-Mike

hm im sorry im getting more errors when trying to install mbam

"Error creating registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\mbam.exe

RegCreateKeyEx failed; code 1019
System could not allocate the required space in a registry log.

Click Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway, or Abort to cancel installation"

quite a few of these errors came up as i clicked ignore on most of them, then at the end the setup fails. I hope we're not running out of options :/.

Thanks

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
