,Serious security and privacy threats ...

Unread postby ginga » December 3rd, 2008, 11:34 am

,Hello,

I had opportunity to benefit from your fantastic services once before and I am very grateful for your support. I have a new issue I'd greatly appreciate your help with.

I received a Windows Internet Explorer message with the following: "Serious security and privacy threats found on your computer. It may damage your files or steal your personal and financial information. Click "OK" to start downloading CRITICAL security software updates." Cancel has no impact. I have not clicked OK.

I also receive a window titled "WARNING! Quick System Scan Results". The text there is "Harmful and mailicous software detected. Online Scanner detected programs that may compromise your privacy or damage your computer." and it lists Trojan-IM.Win32.Faker.a, Virus.Win32.Faker.a, and Trojan-PSW.BAT.Cunter.

I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which I installed at your recommendation last time. It identified one file, which I allowed it to remove. I then re-ran Anti-Malware followed by a hijackthis. The logs follow. I realize this may not be everything if I even got it so would much appreciate your assistance.

I am also having a weird keyboard issue. When I press the right shift key, it types the characters } or ] and the left ' or <. Is it possible that this issue is related to malware or simply a coincidence? Thank you!

Regards,
Ginga

Hi ginga,

I'm sorry it's taken so long for you to get a response :(

It sounds like you found yourself at a bad website and did the right thing. Since the incident, have you had any symptoms of infection? How is your machine running at present?

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

Hello,

Thank you. I haven't received any other strange messages; however, it does seem to be running a little slow ... dozing off from time to time. But it seems to always wake up. The keyboard issue resolved itself. I also received a couple of popup messages while running RSIT - see attached PDF.

The logs follow.

Thank you,
Ginga

Hi ginga,

I don't know what went wrong with RSIT, but the reports appear to have been created successfully, so at this stage I don't think it's anything to be concerned about. However, if they recur please do let me know.

There is a Yahoo-toolbar related program on your system called "Yahoo Companion". It's not malware, but experts would be interested to know whether you are aware that this is installed and if you know it's exact purpose. They would also like to see a file associated with it, please upload it as follows:

Please open this page in your browser:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit- ... channel=32

Fill in the link to topic field with a link to this topic
Copy/paste the following into the Browse to the file you want to submit field:
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn1\YTSingleInstance.dll
Then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Gmer to your Desktop from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip
  • Unzip the program onto your Desktop (right-click, select Extract All... and follow the prompts)
  • Disconnect from the internet and close all running programs
  • Double click gmer.exe, let the gmer.sys driver load if asked
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say OK
  • If there is no warning, then check that the Rootkit tab is selected and click the Scan button - don't change any settings before you do so
  • Please do not use your computer during the scan
  • Once the scan is complete, click the Copy button
  • Open Notepad (Click Start->Run, type notepad and Enter) and hit Ctrl+V to paste the log and then save the log to your desktop

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Gmer log, the Eset scan report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, if you have used Malwarebytes Antimalware recently and it detected/removed anything, please post the log from that program as well.

Hi! I posted the file as requested. I haven't used Malwarebytes Antimalware since the last log file you received. I executed gmer successfully but IE bombed out while running ESET - screen shot of error attached. I tried a couple more times, rebooted and tried a couple more times - all to no avail. Any suggestions? The log files for gmer and hijackthis are attached.

Thank you!
Ginga

Hi,

IE bombed out while running ESET - screen shot of error attached. I tried a couple more times, rebooted and tried a couple more times - all to no avail. Any suggestions?
I don't know what the problem is but don't worry, we'll try a different scanner:

Download Dr.Web CureIt to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click launch.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and UN-CHECK Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and make these changes:
    • Next to Objects - Infected objects select Report
    • Next to Objects - Incurable objects select Report
    • Next to Infected packages -> Archives select Report
    • Next to Infected packages -> Containers select Report
  • At the bottom, UN-CHECK Prompt on action, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Then select Complete scan and press the green arrow to start the scan
  • When the scan is complete, click File-> Save report list, save the report to your desktop and close Dr Web CureIt

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I haven't used Malwarebytes Antimalware since the last log file you received.
OK, please open the program and find the most recent log where anything was detected and post that for me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Dr Web report, the Malwarebytes report and a new HijackThis log.

Hello,

I successfully executed Dr.Web CureIt; however, it completed with "Done - no viruses found" on the status bar and the option to save report list was grayed out. So I'm guessing that since there were no viruses found, there was no log file to save.

I attached the last Malwarebytes' log file where something was found and a new hijack this.

Thank you!

Ginga

Hi ginga,

The logs all look fine.
How is your machine running at present, is it still a little slow?

Hello,

Yes, still a little slow. But, it's an older machine. Probably time to invest in a new one. :-) Thanks so much for your help. Hope you have a fantastic holiday season!

Hi ginga,

Some important final steps:

Please now delete rsit.exe, Gmer.exe, launch.exe and any remaining logs from your Desktop, also delete this folder:
C:\rsit

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

As far as I can tell, Malwarebytes Antimalware has taken care of the problem for you and I think your machine is clean of malware. If you are concerned about the machine running slow, I recommend you try posting at a general troubleshooting forum like WhatTheTech or PC Pitstop. The experts at these forums specialize in this type of problem so you will be in good hands.
Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this means it protects you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
