Unread postby BrownCow » December 19th, 2008, 2:31 am

Below is a log from the hijackthis program
I thought I had removed a trojan or two from my computer with the help of the autoruns program and procexp from sysinternals but I am still getting a problem program which seems to be running out of my system volume. It starts with the name A00 . my TrendMicro virus protection notifys me but no program is quaranteed. I visited the trend micro site and their solution to the malware includes removign some registry values. These values were not present in the registry. If you need more specif ic information I can provide. I'll have to take better notes the next time my virus protection cathes it. Thanks

Hi BrownCow

That one is in system restore.

Let's check if there is something else:

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Hi Shaba and thanks for your reply.
I was able to get in to the System Volume Information Directory and view all the folders / subdirectories. I am not sure how these folders are created but since most of them had Trend Micro associated names so I assume it is Trend mIcro who is creating them. I use TM for anti-virus (PC-cillin). I ran the Trend Micro anti virus scan and found viruses, trojans or malware in around 20 of the folders. I deleted these folders and in the last 36 hours since I have done so I have received no malware message popups which were running at about once every 2-3 hours. So I believe I may have lucked out and removed the malware. I would like to hear what you think of my action. If you think I have more work to do please let me know. Thanks so much for getting back to me.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

I'd like you to check a file for malware.
C:\Program Files\Norton PC Checkup\executables\productScanner\downloader.vbs

  • Copy/Paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Save the complete results in a Notepad/Word document on your desktop.
  • Repeat for all files on the list.

Shaba,
in your last email you had only one item in the list. That item was this:

C:\Program Files\Norton PC Checkup\executables\productScanner\downloader.vbs

I pasted this into the Jotti search and received the following results which I have included below. I've included them although you did not request that I do so. Thanks

Shaba,
Yes I recognize this file. This is the path a file you specified in your last email. Using windows explorer I am able to navigate and view this file.
Thanks
(should I reboot in safe mode and remove this file?)

Please delete it and this as well:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\r16EChTd.exe

Empty Recycle Bin.

Third finding is in system restore which we will flush later.

Still problems?

Shaba, Thank You very much.
I rebooted into safe mode and removed the two files. I did not delete the file in the system volume information folder because you stated that I would do that later. Perhaps I need to perform some operation before removing that file.

Great :)

See below for my final instructions:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

You can delete rsit and c:\rsit folder.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
    Secunia Software Inspector

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

Shaba,
Thank You
The final directions went pretty much perfect but with one hitch.

After I removed the older java versions I could not download the JRE6 v11 from the link you posted. It failed multiple times because of connection timeouts. Instead I went directly to SUN and downloaded their JRE6 v11 for XP platform. I installed it without a problem but now when I (or my son) visits his favorite web site which runs a Java App we can no longer run it. For some reason we are refused a connection and get a java error.
The site is called runescape and the error message I get is copied below.
This may be out of the area of your expertise I just thought I might ask. Perhaps you have an idea as to what I can do.
Other than that.
Thank you so much for helping me clean my system
