hp laptop taken over

Unread postby cjmarkle » December 9th, 2008, 2:55 pm

Hello,

I have an HP 9500 series laptop running XP. This is mainly a machine for kids to use (at home) and it was recently taken over. When Internet Explorer is launched, it opens to a bogus security site. Removing programs is disabled, and the Task Manager utility has been interfered with.

Awhile back I noticed that the AVG package had not only been disabled, but actually de-installed. This may have been one of my children's doing, but it might have been some malware at work too. I re-installed AVG but it looks like the machine has one or more infections now.

Please find my HijackThis! log below....

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Hi Michael,

Thanks so much for your time on solving this problem.

Should I be in "safe" mode when I create the "uninstall list" ?

Hello, cjmarkle

Can you boot into normal mode? I ask this because safe mode with networking is very dangerous. In safe mode, no security programs are running, such as a firewall, which can lead to trojans freely sending information back and forth from their servers. This can leave your critical information in danger.

If you can, please boot into normal mode and make the uninstall list.

Hello, cjmarkle

Please stay in normal mode and do the following,

Get a Hijackthis Log

  • Click on the shortcut on your desktop to open Hijackthis. If you cannot find this, goto Start > All Programs > Hijackthis > then Click on Hijackthis.exe
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Please post that log.

Download and Run SmitfraudFix

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Run the file, it will extract Smitfraudfix to its own folder and run.

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

SmitfraudFix Cleaning

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Please post the SmitFraud Rapport.txt and the 2 RSIT logs.

Michael,

here are the three log files produced by SmitFraud and RSIT. one thing, when I was running SmitFraud (the first time) the laptop shutdown while I was away from it, and I had to restart the process. If anything looks odd, it might be do to that. After restarting the laptop, all steps ran to completion and produced the expected output.
