Firefox Pop-ups (Vundo Virus?) Pls Help

Unread postby acidshort » December 13th, 2008, 2:28 pm

Hello there, I am new and managed to read through a good part of the forums with respect to the rules and all. I have a problem with my web browser (firefox) which is loading random websites on it's own.

UPDATE:: I downloaded the malware bytes anti-malware and updated the definitions/scanned and it seems to have fixed the problem. Below is the original Hijack This Log File followed by the mbam log followed by the new hijack this log. I will check back to this just to see if you see something I have overlooked. I read up on the P2P and will remove that as well. Thank you again for all your help. This site is a godsend for us!

Below is the log file from HiJack This:

Re: Firefox Pop-ups (Vundo Virus?) Pls Help

Unread postby flashh4 » December 19th, 2008, 4:59 pm

Hello acidshort and welcome to the forums.

Please do not run any other programs with out my permission !!
Run all programs in the order posted !!!!!

My name is flashh4 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:

1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)
4. Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
5. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

If you can do those things, everything should go smoothly.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

I will be back as soon as possible with a fix !!
In the mean time can you give me an Uninstall list please !!

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Please post these:
1. New HJT log
2. Uninstall List if not already posted

Thanks
Chuck

Re: Firefox Pop-ups (Vundo Virus?) Pls Help

Unread postby flashh4 » December 21st, 2008, 10:22 am

Hello acidshort, thanks for clarifying that its a personal computer. Lets start the cleaning. Can you rerun malwarebytes scan as you have not clicked fix items!

[*]Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
[*]Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
[*]Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
[*]Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
[*]When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
[*]Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
[*]After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.[/list]

Please post these next:
1. Malwarebytes log/report
2. New HJT log

Thanks
Chuck

Unread postby flashh4 » December 22nd, 2008, 8:54 am

Hi acidshort, lets continue.

Please download and run the following !

RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<< will be maximized) and info.txt (<< will be minimized)

Please post the 2 rsit logs. No need to post a HJT log RSIT makes one.

Thanks

Chuck,

Here are the two log files. It looks like there may be more stuff to correct. I look forward to your reply. Specifically, the WexTech Answerworks... I don't have a clue what that is. Also the references to resycle(d) - I thought that i was rid of that problem, but it has left some fingerprints. Again, thanks for the help.

Due to lack of response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
