MalwarebytesAM found Trojan Fake Alert

Unread postby mwarrior » November 29th, 2008, 11:05 pm

Y'all are helping my son clean a rootkit. He had fake alert, too, and we are connected to the same network. He had P2P evidence on his, but my computer has never been used for that (to my knowledge). I have kept pretty close tabs on my system. Today it started running really slow and my HJT log has some things that are over my head. The HJT tutorial says to do research on 11 lines, but I'm not sure how to research International* I do not use IE, so I'm not the one that changed anything in IE. I now have a LSP issue that wasn't there last scan. I tried to run Kaspersky (because my son was using it today) instead of starting with my HJT log like I know to do. The scan wouldn't start. I would appreciate your help. Thanks so much. Here is my HJT log:

Hello!

I did find international and I did look in IE. The information that I found was inconclusive (to me), so I would like verification from you guys

It is a legit entry. You can read about it here.

Do you still have Malwarebytes Antimalware installed? If you have could you please post the log for me to see.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Select the Logs tab
  • Click on the latest log. The bottom most log is the latest
  • Click Open
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Spybot S&D Teatimer

From your log i can see this that you are running a Spybot S&D Teatimer. This might interfere with fixes we are about to do so we need to disable it.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident
    Tea-Timer
(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

random's system information tool (RSIT)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Sorry about the delay. I don't know what it is about me and this site, but I always seem to end up with my kids in the emergency room right when I'm in the middle of something pertaining to MRU. lol OK, maybe now that I've got the mandatory 2 ER visits out of the way this week, we can move on! :D

I don't see the Teatimer in my tray.

Yes, I did have TeaTimer too, although it didn't gray out when I disabled it. I went through the steps and restarted.

Hello!

The version of AVG you are using will be discontinued end of this year. It wont get anymore updates. So i would recommend to get rid of it.

Sorry about the delay. I don't know what it is about me and this site, but I always seem to end up with my kids in the emergency room right when I'm in the middle of something pertaining to MRU. lol OK, maybe now that I've got the mandatory 2 ER visits out of the way this week, we can move on

No worries, real life comes always first. I hope everything is ok now.

I highlighted what I think are the problems.

One entry belongs to AVG and another one is just a leftover entry.

I know I need to update Java and probably Adobe Reader.

Yes both needs updating. Do you want me to give instructions for it?

Isn't my hosts file supposed to be bigger than that?

It only shows first ten, so thats why it is so short. There are more entries.

We play those games on miniclips.com Is that risky?

It should be ok. I personally dont like sites like that. So far i havent found anything malicious about the site.

Antivirus

Looking over your log it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect cleans and erase harmful virus files on a computer
Web server or network.
Unchecked virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present and will clean delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

I updated Java through Control Panel > Java > Update. It said it updated. I also updated Adobe Reader by opening it and clicking update. I think it required a restart. I fixed the 16 line in HJT, downloaded and ran ATF Cleaner. When I tried Kaspersky, it said I didn't have a new enough Java. I clicked on their link and downloaded the file manually this time and chose to reinstall when prompted. I'm about to close this window so that it can finish. I don't know what happened with the other Java update. It said it had updated. I clicked Update twice after it had updated and got the message that there were no more updates available.

As to how my computer is running, it is slow. It seems to be slower than normal, but being basketball and volleyball season I keep it maxed out with all the JV and V sports pictures I take for the school teams. I don't know if it's slow because I have so little free memory or if it's because there is funny business going on. And as for ER visits, if we can keep the winter nose bleeds to a minimum and shoes on the kids feet when running around construction projects, we might be able to steer clear of the place! :D

Hello!

Lets rerun ATF cleaner and try ESET online scanner. Also i need new HijackThis log to see if your java is updated.

ATF-Cleaner

  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Eset online scannne

Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

I left the computer scanning at Kaspersky. It finally finished. I'm not sure about it though because it was updating and it went from something like 42% to completed immediately with nothing in between.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7 REPORT

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 version: 7.0.25.0
Program database last update: Saturday, December 06, 2008 06:35:15
Records in database: 1439963
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scan settings:

Scan archives: yes
Scan mail databases: yes

Scan area - My Computer:
C:\
D:\
E:\
F:\

Scan statistics:
Files scanned: 141858
Threat name: 0
Infected objects: 0
Suspicious objects: 0
Duration of the scan: 05:34:19

No malware has been detected. The scan area is clean.

The selected area was scanned.

OK, I'll move on to the new list now and get back with you. Thanks for the help!

Edit: Computer is running very slow. I got an external drive for all the photos, and I've been moving all the photos to it. Now I have 10 gb free rather than a few hundred K or meg as before. I thought the computer would run much faster, but it has really slowed down. It's been so slow that AVG has trouble downloading updates. I think it times out and then I have to manually tell it to update. It's not just internet related things that are slow either. Opening documents and just all around computer usage is slow.

In the meantime, when I open Internet Explorer to run the Eset scan, I get an unspecified error that Internet Explorer cannot download. Do you need a screenshot of that? I'm going to try that scan now.

When I check Yes and go to click Start, the Start button blinks. When I click Start it says the webpage cannot be found.

I think the problem is in my Active X. I think I have it set to not work in IE, but I don't remember how I did that. Since I never use IE, I reasoned that I should set it that way. I think I remember that, anyways.

Oops! I posted as an edit. I'll repost that here:

Hi there Bio,

Thanks for your help! I usually try to stay on top of all the temp files, etc. Here's what I did along with the results:

Disk cleanup 75k
I use Diskeeper set it and forget it. I changed it to screensaver mode. I checked to see that it's defragging and I'm 5% fragmented. Should I change it to once a month? Can you defrag too much?

Unnecessary Startup Items
I did the next part backwards, I suppose. I installed winpatrol and disabled Outpost Feedback since I no longer have the firewall. Then I installed StartUpLite to see what they suggested. It disabled RealScheduler and Java Updater and some other things. Should I uninstall StartUpLite now? I looked in Add or Remove Programs and didn't see it listed.

Disable DNS Client Service
I'm sorry, but I don't know if I'm part of a domain. We have a network here at the house. I don't think that qualifies for the domain meant in the article, but I refrained until I got your input.

Indexing
My indexing was already stopped.

Free Disk Space
I believe I have 28% free disk space.

System Restore Points
I think I should wait to delete System Restore Points until you say I'm clear. Do you think so?

AVG Updates
AVG has updated successfully twice and failed three times today. Is this normal? It seems like it's too many times. I'm beginning to think it's having a problem with Comodo.

I highlighted what I think are issues - not all malware related I'm sure. I'm not to the point that I feel comfortable fixing things in HJT, so I'll rely on whatever you say and leave the rest until I know more. Thanks again.

Hello!

There is nothing in your log that would indicate that is a Malware related issues. Keep StartUpLite for now, when you want to delete it just delete the exe file.

You can Disable DNS Client Service.

You can delete the system restore points.

I could point you to a PC troubleshooting forum if you like?

A PC troubleshooting forum that is trustworthy would be great. So what was up with the original catch of Trojan Fake Alert. Malwarebytes AM caught it, and that's the end of it?

DNS was already stopped, and I deleted all the Restore Points except the current one.

Thanks so much for your help!

Not a Malware Issues

At this stage your machine looks to be clean of malware, so the problems you are experiencing are not likely to be malware related. I think the best and fastest solution for you is to post on a PC troubleshooting forum like the Browsers, Internet & email forum at WhatTheTech. They specialize in handling problems like this so you are certain to get expert assistance and a speedy resolution is very likely.

I'm sorry that I could not be of more help to you, and I wish you the best of luck with solving your computer problems. If you have any questions or require any other assistance please let me know.

You can get rid of the tools we used:
  • RSIT and the folder C:/rsit (You can just delete the exe file from your desktop)
  • ATF Cleaner (You can just delete the exe file from your desktop

    General Security and Computer Health
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection. You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented.

    • Set correct settings for files
      • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
      • Under Hidden files and folders if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
      • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
      • If necessary check Display content of system folders
      • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
      • Click OK
    • Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
NOTE: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
    • Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
NOTE: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.
    • Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector or
F-secure Health Check. I suggest that you run one of them at least once a month.
    • Make Internet Explorer More Secure
You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this SITE

    Recommended Programs

I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (if not already present), and the updating of them on a regular basis.

    • WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. For more information, please visit HERE.
    • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious ActiveX controls from installing on your computer. If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see HERE. You can download SpywareBlaster from HERE.
    • Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file. A simple explanation of what a Hosts file does is HERE and for more information regarding host files read HERE.
    • Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:Firefox or Opera

Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to keep all of your security programs up to date.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy surfing and stay clean!
