Trojan infection w/persistent IE problems

Unread postby jlg » November 28th, 2008, 3:54 pm

On Internet Explorer, I downloaded what I thought was an Ad-on to see a website video and my free AVG software tells me that it caught a Trojan virus. I immediately run a scan and it catches a couple files. I got McAfree Virus Scan Enterprise and also the $27 version of Ad-aware and ran full scans. McAfree caught numerous files that AVG missed and Ad-aware caught hundreds of files that both missed. Despite this, IE still redirects me to random websites everytime I use a search engine. Every time I have to pull down the back menu to go back to the search results, but it works the second time I click on the desired link without redirecting me. I've downloaded Firefox to escape this frustration but I still want to fix the problem. I'd really appreciate some help! In addition, my audio with Windows media player is very sensitive now to what it will play, but my hardware and drivers are fine. Firefox will give initial sound but immediately stop the audio and will also intermitantly play brief bits of the video's audio I'm trying to watch...usually when I'm jumping to and from other files or windows I have open.

Hi jlg

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Re: Trojan infection w/persistent IE problems

Unread postby Shaba » December 4th, 2008, 8:52 am

Yes malwarebytes is pretty good with new malware :)

Download ERUNT from Derfisch or MVPS and save it to your desktop.

Please follow Step 4 onwards of the Installing & Using ERUNT to back up your registry. Skip Step 19 for now.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Code: Select all
    :files
    C:\Program Files\uTorrent
    C:\Program Files\My Kazaa Gold

    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\authorizedapplications\list]
    "C:\Program Files\uTorrent\utorrent.exe"=-
    "C:\Program Files\My Kazaa Gold\giFT\giFTl.exe"=-

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{c78dbb64-6af6-11dc-b805-0012f01fa8ba}]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{eb9961e2-7358-11dc-b80e-0012f01fa8ba}]

    :commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [reboot]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Re-run rsit.

Tell me also if you recognize this folder?

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\tctcbirg

Post:

- a fresh rsit log (only log.txt will appear)
- otmoveit3
- answer to my question, please.

Re: Trojan infection w/persistent IE problems

Unread postby jlg » December 6th, 2008, 1:36 pm

In my 1st post I forgot to mention that I tried using Windows system restore to try and undo this massive mistake but either way of opening it (under system tools or using F8 at start up to open it in safe mode) didn't work. Each time I tried, I would pick a restore point prior to the infection date. It would go through the process and after the computer restarts, the system restore window comes up and says the system could not be restored the date selected...no matter which "system checkpoint" date I picked. Also, the infection disabled the task manager, so when I'd push Ctrl,Alt,delete the task manager button would not work. I already got help on this and now task manager works fine.
Don't know if any of this helps, but I just wanted to disclose everything that occurred after the infection.
To answer your question, I don't recognize the folder you mentioned. When I open the All Users folder in Documents and Settings, the folder isn't there or is hidden. I found a "Application Data" folder under my user name "Joseph" in Documents but there is no "tctcbirg" file shown or found with search within that folder.
Here are the log files:

Re: Trojan infection w/persistent IE problems

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Re: Trojan infection w/persistent IE problems

"Should I erase these files, uninstall MyKazaa and redownload it? I use MyKazaa for downloading music..."

It is against forum policy and if you decide to do that, this thread will get closed.

Empty this folder:

C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles

Delete this:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations\{F0E5FAD3-859E-457C-BEBE-779A607E7BF3}\My Kazaa Gold.msi

Empty Recycle Bin.

Still problems?

Due to lack of response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
