First of all, you will need to print out this post and/or save a copy as a text file in Notepad so that you have a hard copy of these instructions; you can not have IE/Firefox/any browser open during the fix

Next, please enable viewing of hidden files as follows:
1) Go to My Computer, and click on the "Tools" menu
2) Click "Folder options"
3) Select the "View" tab
4) Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
5) Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
6) Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries:

  • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = about:blank
  • R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html
  • R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = about:blank
  • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
  • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank
  • R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
  • R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank
  • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
  • R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
  • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Pbwwdwuc] C:\WINDOWS\System32\w?nlogon.exe
  • O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in Trusted Zone, should be Internet Zone
  • O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'https' protocol is in Trusted Zone, should be Internet Zone

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Also, delete the following files (if they exist):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\w?nlogon.exe

Delete files/folder from the following directories (But not the directory itself, for example delete all files/folder IN temp; but not temp itself!)
  • C:\Windows\Temp\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<All other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <---This will delete your internet cache--including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested. You will need to manually log on to internet sites the first time you re-visit them again.
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<All other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
  • Empty your "Recycle Bin"

There are always a couple of files that you will not be able to delete..this is normal and expected

Restart your computer and run this online virus scan: ActiveScan
  • ) Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send(*NOTE it's perfectly safe to do so..You will NOT be spammed from this)
    - Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If/when you get a notice that Panda wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location like your desktop.

After another restart please post a fresh HijackThis log along with the results of the Active scan.

Thank you everything is running better now but I still do not know how to clean my temporary internet folder. I mean I know I can go through Internet Explorer, tools, internet options but I know there is another way I can clean my temporary internet files out and I would like to clean my files out that way. Thank you so much you helped me out a great deal. Although, my norton virus protection says I have a virus in my temporary files. The file is called batdownloader.

Thanks,

Tanya

What happens when you use the method i posted in both my replys for cleaning your temp folder out??

If for, what ever reason, you can not simply go to them and delete them as I described; let's try another tack.....

b]Download CCleaner from HERE to clean your temp files.
[list]
[*]Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
[*]Select your language and click OK, then next.
[*]After reading the license agreement and click I Agree.
[*]Click next to use the default install location. Next click Install and finish.
[*]Double click the CCleaner on your desktop to start the program.
[*]On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
[*]If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
[*]Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
[*]Caution: DO NOT use the Issues feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it may find legitimate items.
[*]After CCleaner has finished, click Exit.

Then post one FINAL HijackThis log for review.

Congratulations, your log is clean.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.

    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
    * CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
    1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    2. Restart your computer.

    3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard and IE/Spyad.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It is free.

Now my printer says no communication

Unread postby tanyasm » November 30th, 2005, 7:44 pm

Now my printer will not print documents from the internet. I get an error message saying no communication between my computer and the printer. The reason why it is doing this because I installed those programs you recommended but the problem now is I can not use my printer.

I can assure you any program recommend would have NO direct (or inderect) bearing on printer functions.

Now my printer will not print documents from the internet.

Does it print local documents and JUST not from the internet??

If it doesn't print at ALL try the following; if it will print documents from computer and not the internet please clarify.

Disconect the printer from the computer, boot to safe mode, Control Panel>System>hardware(tab)>Device manager>remove ALL instances of that printer listed. Turn computer off>hook printer back up>reboot and let windows find the printer again.
Printer should work just fine now (if you have an install disk for the printer, have it handy, you shouldn't need it but ....)

I'm not saying that the programs you recommended messed my computer up. I think the protections are not allowing my printer to print contents from the internet. I also want to say thank you for everything you have done to help you. You are doing an excellent job.

Sincerely,

Tanya

Hello,

I'm replying to your topic because jwbirdsong had to leave for a few days, and he asked if I would keep an eye on your topic until he returns. :)

First, although it may sound ridiculous, if your printer is a Lexmark or a Dell printer made by Lexmark, it will sometimes give that message if it has failed to power itself on manually. If that's the case, depress the printer's power button to turn it on before you attempt to print. If that's not the cause of the problem, then try disconnecting/uninstalling and reconnecting/installing the printer as jwbirdsong suggested. That will usually do it.

In any event, none of the procedures that you've been instructed to follow would have an impact on your computer being able to communicate with your printer. However, I do notice something that definitely will cause problems, although I cannot guarantee you that it caused this particular one. You are running three antivirus programs and at least two firewalls! You have AVG, Norton, and Computer Associates VET antivirus installed. The Computer Associates program appears to be associated with something called Yahoo Online Protection. In addition, the Norton product you're using also includes a firewall, and you're using Kerio Personal Firewall as well. I can only hope that the built-in Windows Firewall is disabled and not adding to the mix.

This situation is extremely dangerous and can cause serious problems. The very least it will do is lessen your antivirus and firewall protection as the various programs vie for resources. You must have only one antivirus and one firewall running. Please decide on the antivirus and firewall you wish to keep and immediately uninstall the remainder, then reboot your computer to complete the process.

Please let us know how your system is running after you complete all of the above. Also, once everything is resolved, you will need to make a trip to the Windows Update site and install XP's SP2. It's extremely important to keep Windows updated in order to close any/all security holes and vulnerabilities. ;)

I have norton internet security 2005 but it seems like it let viruses get past it. Which ones do YOU think I should keep that would be good for me. I think the reason why my printer is doing this is because of the various programs. My computer is a Dell product, I believe it is made by Dell also.

Thank you,

There's nothing wrong with any of the products you're using; you're just using too many of them. You just need to decide which antivirus and which firewall best suit your personal preferences and needs, then uninstall the rest.

You need to do this immediately if not sooner. :D
