Recovering from Facebook worm / browser hijack - first post

Unread postby codecrazy » November 24th, 2008, 3:45 am

Hi,

Many Thanks - What you guys are doing here is amazing.

I connect to the internet using a netgear router. Any advice on how to check I've not fallen victim to the DNS thingy would be great. I've restored my router settings from a previously saved setup. I had hoped this would be sufficient?

A momentary lapse in concentration had me clicking on a Facebook message with a link to what I thought was a video, but turned out to be a poisonned website: youtube-x

This then asked me to update my Flash and before I knew it the Trojan was downloaded and a similar message was sent to everyone in my friends list. :(

I've run Trend Micro house call, Smitfradfix.exe, Kaspersky online scanner, Malwarebytes.exe and ESET. The thing that really worries me is I seem to pick up the browser hijack everytime I visit my Facebook profile. Is it possible my profile is infected on Facebook's server?

I'm running Kaspersky online again now. I'll add it's findings to this post when it has finished. It has already found 8 threat names and 9 infected objects! :(

I should be really grateful if someone would check my HJT log to see if I have been successful at removng all this crud from my PC. Also, if you have any advice on what I could do to speed up my machine that would be great. :)

Kind Regards,

Pete

Hello Pete,

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forums! My name is Adam and I will be assisting you with getting the malware off of your computer. Sorry about the delay in getting response.

Please observe the following points before we start:
  1. If at any point you don't understand something, please let me know and I will be glad to expain or go more into depth for you. :)
  2. I am still in training, so my responses may take more time than usual because all of my posts must be checked by an expert or teacher.
Also, please remember, I am a volunteer and I have a personal life. I go to school full time, have a part time job, and I do sports. A lot of this takes a lot of time.
  3. Please keep all of your replys in this topic/thread and do not make a new topic/thread, thanks!
  4. Please stick with this, don't stop responding because the symptoms are gone, the infection could still be there. Keep replying to my posts until I give you the All Clean message. ;)
  5. If you don't reply within five days after my last instructions this topic will be closed. If you will not be able to reply within five days please tell me so the topic will not be closed.

Make an Uninstall List

Next, please make an uninstall list using HijackThis.
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply. Please also include a new HijackThis log.

Regards,
Adam

Hi Adam,

This is the updated HJT log with the Uninstall list below.

I added Tiny personal fire wall, it's an old program I used to use in the past just to keep track of incomming and outgoing connections.

Regards,

Pete

Sorry about the delay. :(

Hello,

Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Double click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon on your desktop.
  • Once the program has loaded, click on the Update tab and click on Check for Updates.
  • Click on the Scanner tab.
  • Select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Fix HijackThis lines

  • Run HijackThis!
  • Click on Do a System Scan only
  • Place a tick next to the following lines:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:9090
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local;<local>
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {36be52fc-3977-4402-8fb2-be1941edb829} - (no file)
O23 - Service: IPSEC Services (PolicyAgent) (ipsec services (policyagent) ) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\tinyproxy\tinyproxy.exe (file missing)
Close all open windows and click on Fix checked and when you get a popup window click on Yes.

Please post back a new HijackThis log and the MBAM log.

Adam

Hello,

Please navigate to this folder: C:\Program Files\tinyproxy

If it is there, please delete it. If not, please let me know that.

Also, you have some infected emails. I recommend going through and deleting any spam emails and such that you may have in your Outlook Express. They are in these folders: Hotmail Pension Crisis - Deleted Items - Sent Item

You also have some infected emails in the Windows Live Mail, those are in the Deleted Items and Sent Items folders.

If you have any problems with deleting the emails, please advise me of that.

Remove Bad Services

Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat Please save it on your desktop.

Code: Select all
@echo off
sc stop "ipsec services (policyagent) "
sc delete "ipsec services (policyagent) "
ipconfig /all >> temp.txt
FOR /F "tokens=*" %%i IN (temp.txt) DO (
echo %%i | find "Physical Address" > nul
IF ERRORLEVEL 1 echo %%i >> log.txt
)
del temp.txt
start notepad log.txt
del FixServices.bat

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Your anti-virus program may give you a warning. Please allow the file to run if this warning occurs.

Update Java
Your JRE is out of date. The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs. Locate J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  2. Repeat for these old versions of JRE:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
  3. Click here to visit Java's website.
  4. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  5. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  6. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  7. Click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  8. Run this installation to update your Java.

In your next reply, please include:
  1. log.txt
  2. A new HijackThis log

Adam

Hi Adam,

I couldn't find C:\Program Files\tinyproxy - I guess it's already been deleted?

I've been through all my email folders, including some that were highlighted by Kaspersky. I've deleted the folders and removed the pension crisis account from outlook express (I didn't use it anyway).

I did the same for Live Mail. In fact I have uninstalled this program now.

I have uninstalled the old Java programs and installed the up to date one ok.

I ran the Remove Bad Services batch file ok.

Re: Recovering from Facebook worm / browser hijack - first post

Hello,

You said that you worried about your DNS settings in your first. We will look into that now. :)

Since you are using a router, you will need to check those settings in the router. You should be able to do so by going to http://192.168.0.1/. In the router configuration settings, look for DNS Server Addresses (or similar) and post the address' so that I can check to make sure they are ok. Have you changed the default password on your router? If you have changed it, then it is very likely that your DNS server settings are safe. If you can't find the dns server, then please tell me the make and model of your router and I can give you further instructions.

If you need any help or have any questions, feel free to ask them.

Regards,
Adam
