Malware?

Unread postby kongming92 » November 18th, 2008, 10:38 pm

Hello. I do not know if I have any malware on my computer. The reason I am asking is because my network administrator informed me that he was getting a reading for "Proxy Socks 5" or something like that, which I don't know about. I am wondering if there is any software on my computer that may be causing that that I do not know about..

Hi! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is John Brouwer - if it helps, you can call me John for short. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

These rules are good for you to know:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • If you don't reply within five days after my last instructions this topic will be closed. If you will not be able to reply within five days please tell me so the topic will not be closed.

These rules are to make my voluntary work more comfortable:
  • Please be patient. The work I do is voluntary and I also have a private life (school, work, friends and hobbies).
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Also, don't post logs as attachments. Other helpers like to view the logs as well and opening a lot of attachments is irritating. It can also contain malware.

Finally, please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Open The Misc Tool Section button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop and post the contents in a reply to this topic.

Regards,
John.

Re: Malware?

Unread postby John B. » November 23rd, 2008, 6:05 am

Hi,

There are a couple of things in the log which are wrong, so let's start cleaning..

Step 1: Disable Windows Defender
Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix. To disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • Click Save
  • Close Windows Defender
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

Step 2: Download and Run ComboFix
Before you download the newest version of ComboFix please make sure there's no older version of ComboFix on your desktop! If there is one, please delete it.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop!

You will have to close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. For information on how to do that for your programs see this webpage:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html
Now close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs. After doing that close any open browsers.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console. If ComboFix does not start about the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console you probably already have it.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Image

Click on Yes to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a report for you. This report will also be saved in C:\ComboFix.txt

Note: Remember to re-enable your anti virus and anti malware programs.

Step 3: Post logs
Please post the following logs in a reply to this topic (use multiple posts if needed):
  • Tell me if your McAfee software includes a firewall
  • Fresh HijackThis log
  • ComboFix log

Regards,
John.

Upon running ComboFix my wireless internet connection no longer works. Is this normal or did something go wrong?

Thanks!

Hi Charles,

Upon running ComboFix my wireless internet connection no longer works. Is this normal or did something go wrong?

Hmm, it should work again after ComboFix is done. Is it still not working? If so, please read this:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofi ... ix#restore

There are two questionable files I would like to know more about, so today that is the only thing we will do :)

One of the files I want you to upload for research we do not know the path of, so we will first search for the file to see where it actually is.

Step 1: Search for file
We will do it this way:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Search.
  • Click All files and folders.
  • Expand More advanced optionsand then check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders and Search Subfolders.
  • Paste this into the All or part of the file name box:
    WIKI.DLL
  • If it is found please note the path. If it is not found please forget about it and tell me it is no longer on your system.

Step 2: Upload malware for scanning
Now let's check the files:
c:\windows\imsins.BAK
WIKI.DLL (if you found it the previous step you will have enter the path yourself)

  • Copy/Paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Save the complete results in a Notepad/Word document on your desktop.
  • Repeat for all files on the list.

Step 3: Post logs
Please post the VirusTotal/Jotti results in a reply to this topic (make sure it is structured so I will understand what is what).

Regards,
John.

Hi,

Results are good :) Let's remove some HijackThis entries and run a scanner.

Step 1: Remove HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: WIKI.DLL

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step 2: Run CCleaner
CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!
  • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
  • Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    • In the Windows Tab:
      • Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
      • Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
      • Clean all entries in the System section
      • Clean all entries in the Advanced section
      • Clean any others that you choose
    • In the Applications Tab:
      • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
      • Clean any others that you choose
  • Click the Run Cleaner button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click exit when done.
  • If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO
CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

Step 3: Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Close the Notepad file.
  • The log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Step 4: Post logs
Please post the following logs in a reply to this topic (use multiple posts if needed):
  • Tell me how your computer is running
  • Fresh HijackThis log
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log

Regards,
John.

Hi,

There is one file which I find very strange and I would like you to research it a little. Make sure you have done at least one reboot after posting the logs yesterday.

Step 1: Show your hidden files
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Step 2: Check if a file is present
Please check if the following file exists on your computer:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\h@tkeysh@@k.dll
If so, please continue with step 3. If not, please let me know.

Step 3: Upload malware for scanning
I'd like you to check the file for malware now.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\h@tkeysh@@k.dll

  • Copy/Paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programs.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Save the complete results in a Notepad/Word document on your desktop and post them here.

Regards,
John.

Hi,

There are a couple of things left to do, but first we have to do some things with ComboFix and see what it tells us.

Before you download the newest version of ComboFix please make sure there's no older version of ComboFix on your desktop! If there is one, please delete it.

Download the newest version of ComboFix from one of the locations below:
BleepingComputer.com
ForoSpyware.com
GeeksToGo.com
It is very important that you save ComboFix directly to your desktop.

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Code: Select all
DeQuarantine::
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ss.sys.vir

File::
c:\windows\Tasks\MP Scheduled Quick Scan.job

Driver::
filter

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. For information on how to disable your anti virus program please see this:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

If your have Avast as anti virus an additional thing has to be changed to make ComboFix work properly:

After doing that close any open browsers.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

ComboFix will start scannning and when it opens its log please close it.

Remember that the ComboFix log is saved here: C:\ComboFix.txt. There will also be a log called DeQuarantine_log.txt. Please also post that log and a fresh HijackThis log.

Regards,
John.

P.S. I see you have Java Developer Kit installed. Do you use those features or only the Runtime applications?
