I keep getting internet speed tests pop up or zedo.com or trafficexplorer.com pop up even if I don't have an Internet Explorer window open. I downloaded Hijackthis, but I'm not really sure how to use it! PLEASE help if you can. I'd really appreciate it.

Hello
Please take note of the following before we begin the cleaning process:
  • The whole process will often take several days to complete, so please stay patient
  • Hang in there until I give you the 'All clean'. If you leave prematurely because your computer seems to be back to its old self, the risk of re-infection will be very high
  • Perform all actions in the order given
  • The instructions I give expect that you're using an account with administrator privileges and that the language of your operating system is English.
  • Dont be afraid to ask questions if something is unclear or you run into issues during cleaning steps
  • I recommend you read through each set of instructions before you actually perform them

1) Create an uninstall list
  • Launch Hijackthis
  • Click the Open the Misc Tools section button
  • Click the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click the Save list button.
  • Include this log in your next reply

2) Get a new HiJackThis log
  • Launch Hijackthis
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button
  • HJT will run a scan and a log will open in Notepad
  • Include this log in your next reply

Did your friend format your computer?
If not, you really need to read the below.

Your computer has been infected by a backdoor trojan.

This is bad news.
Backdoors are the worst type of infection because a backdoor gives intruders complete control over your computer and can log your keystrokes, steal personal information, credit card numbers, etc.

Due to its backdoor functionality your computer must be considered compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted in its current state. Many experts in the security/anti-malware community believes that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action is to do a complete format of your harddrive and reinstall the operating system. This is the only way to be 100% sure the computer is clean.
However, if you do not wish to reinstall your OS and would like to attempt to clean your machine, I will help you do so.

You are strongly advised to do the following:
  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it has been cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data, like documents, pictures, email, etc.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any other financial transactions, then:
Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

Do not change your passwords from the infected computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

To help you understand more, I recommend you take the time to read the following articles:
What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
When should do a reformat and reinstallation of my OS
Where to backup your files
How to backup your files in Windows XP
Restoring your backups

Should you have any questions feel free to ask.

If you computer hasnt been formatted and reinstalled already, and you decide not to run this procedure in the near future, I strongly recommend you post back here so we can have a look at your logs.
This is one of those infections where you want to be as sure as possible that the computer is fully clean.

uhohh. =[ No we didn't reformat. He just downloaded Spybot and it deleted a bunch of things. The pop-ups stopped so I assumed everything was fine. I don't use this computer for anything financial, just school work, AIM, and facebook. Even though we deleted it, should I still reformat? I was trying to avoid that but if you recommend it I will.

I have another question. Is all my music and pictures and Word documents safe to transfer if I reformat? I won't be putting the trojan back on will I?

What's the worst thing that could happen if a criminal had complete access to all the information on your computer?
Could they get your (or somebody elses) credit card number, social security number, paypal password or other sensitive information?
Can they get sensitive information by getting access to your email account? With access to your computer, they can get access to your email if you use this computer to access it.
If somebody wants my recommendation I always recommend a re-format. The risk, however small, is not worth it.
It only takes a few hours to back up your personal files, format and reinstall, while the hassle of dealing with something like identity theft is a huge in comparison.
If a business/corporate customer comes in where I work with a malware infected computer, and an infection similair to yours is discovered, we dont even offer to clean it.
We only offer to help them backup, format and reinstall. This is the only situation where we refuse service even though we can give it and the customer is willing to pay. If the customer insists long enough we'll eventually have to ask him to take the computer somewhere else. That's a very unique situation, even though it doesnt apply to you it tells you something about how serious this threat is considered.

Back to the initial question I asked. If the answer is "nothing more harmfull than what they can do with the information in a phone book", then maybe you can consider cleaning it, but would you really want to continue owning a computer you cant trust? Maybe a year from now you've forgotten about all this, enter your credit card number at a web shop, and a week later your bank account has been emptied.
If it were my computer I'd format it, even if I was currently only using it for facebook.

Is all my music and pictures and Word documents safe to transfer if I reformat? I won't be putting the trojan back on will I?

Everything you back up must be scanned with up to date anti-virus software before it is transfered back to the computer.

It depends on how much data you need to back up.
If its not too much you can burn it to a DVD/CD or copy it to an USB stick.
You can also use an external hard drive, which normally has a lot more storage space than any of the above.
These are the best options.
