Spyware remover hijack.

Unread postby sirinth » November 19th, 2008, 9:11 pm

Gah!
Suddenly I have this "Security toolbar" on internet explorer, firefox won't even run, and constant pop-ups that vaguely resemble the windows security popups.
The little balloon cheefully tells me to click on it to start a 'free scan'.

AVG and Adaware find plenty of minor fixes, but nothing seems to cure it.
IE immediately redirects to some spyware remover site, which automatically prompts me to download something or other virus remover. After saying 'no' to about 5 pop-ups, it finally lets me browse away. Some sites seem to be blocked (and it again pops up telling me to download said virus-remover to 'fix' it.)

No matter how many times I change the homepage, it reverts to about::blank. Yet it always starts as one of a few sites.
Here is the current one as I post this:
http://renamehomepage.com/security/xp/

Others are 'safeinfoservice.com'
and 'avspyware.com' or something similar. I sometimes only see glimpses of the url before it changes the window size and removes the browser bar so I cannot escape.

edit: It has also created links on my desktop that redirect to:
(I did not click on it, simply viewed properties to get this url before deleting it)

Here is the hijackthis log:

Hi sirinth

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Someone responded the day before suggesting I run Malwarebytes, which indeed seems to have removed most of it.
Here's the log from that:

You are now running RSIT from temp folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\NJQ8C4AG\RSIT[1].exe

Please save to Desktop, re-run and post back a fresh log.txt :)

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

I've done the above step.

Haven't had problems since running Malwarebytes', so in theory I should be fine now. Never hurts to double check, though. :D
Thanks a lot.

Nice to hear :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10.

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (Uncheck during installation "Install COMODO Antivirus (Recommended)"!, "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor
