TDSS Trojan driving me buggy!

Unread postby ItsAllInMyHead » November 19th, 2008, 7:02 pm

Hello.

I was foolish enough to open a portable program without first testing it for malware. Avast! instantly alerted me about a detected Trojan, but despite the file's removal, the Trojan had already bypassed Avast! and embedded itself in my computer.

My system automatically rebooted and certain features of Windows were disabled, specifically the ability to run 'regedit' and to view hidden files and folders. Also, any program that uses an applet window to connect to the Internet will shut down the second I click on any key.

I downloaded Trojan Remover 6.7.3 build 2550 from C-Net to see if I could combat this problem, but have had very little success. The program removes the registry key and renames the executable, but asks to reboot to finish the task. Upon reboot, I am thrown back into the vicious cycle.

One point of interest is Trojan-Remover states that the occurrences are coming from C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\TDSSrfdc.sys, yet when I boot in SafeMode and am able to view hidden files, that fake driver isn't there and a thorough search of my computer turns up empty for any file with that name.

Hope you can help...

Here is my HijackThis report:
(I have highlighted specific key areas that I know are related, but there is something else there, because the executable continues to be re-installed.)

Re: TDSS Trojan driving me buggy!

Unread postby Odd dude » November 20th, 2008, 4:57 am

Hello and welcome to the forums!

I'm Odd dude, pleased to meet you; if it helps, you can call me OD ;). I will be helping you with your infection. However, it is important to take note of the following - quite the wall of text, I know, but please bear with me:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (Hijackthis is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient whilst I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please carefully read any instruction that I give you.
Reading too lightly will cause you to miss important steps, which could have destructive effects.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Only YOU must use these instructions, they are not suitable for any other computer with similar problems.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan. The one thing you should always do, though, is making sure that your antivirus definitions are up-to-date!
  • If I tell you to download a tool which you already have, please re-download it and do not use the copy you already have. This is because the tools are updated regularly.
  • In Windows Vista, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as administrator!
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you were to do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
  • As I am still in training at the Malware Removal University, anything I do must be checked by an experienced malware fighter. This means there might be a slight delay in my answers.
  • Lastly, I am no magican. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system. Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

I am now analyzing your situation and hope to be back with you soon. While I am reviewing your situation, could you please do the following for me:

Make an Uninstall List
I need you to create an uninstall list so I can further analyze your situation.

  • Start HijackThis.
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save list...
  • Save the list to your desktop, or any other convenient place.

Please post back:
  • Uninstall list
  • New hijackthis log

Re: TDSS Trojan driving me buggy!

Unread postby Odd dude » November 21st, 2008, 5:11 am

Hi ItsAllInMyHead

The reason you couldn't find tdss*.* files is that they are very strongly protected. This is a very bad thing.

You have a VERY serious infection known as a rootkit. Rootkits are specialist programs designed to patch the Windows kernel with the intention of hiding themselves from Windows.
What does this mean? Rootkits hide files. And really good rootkits hide really bad files.

We do have tools to detect rootkits, but the problem with these is that they still require Windows to operate, and an exceptionally advanced rootkit might therefor have patched the Windows kernel in such a way that even our specialist tools are fooled - because in the end, they're nothing more than kernel-privileged (= highest permissions possible) applications.

Don't worry - most rootkits don't exhibit this type of behaviour. They only patch the userland mode - which means that normal programs such as Windows Explorer will not detect them, but higher privileged kernel programs will.

However, we have also identified a small number of kernel rootkits. They completely patch the kernel, which is, in fact, the very essence of Windows. So they can potentially fool every scanner we have because of there high privileges.

Because of these functions, you should consider reformatting and reinstalling the operating system.

The thing is, Windows is now lying to you. And we can never be sure how deep this goes. Not all rootkits can be detected. Every rootkit can and will impair your computer's normal behaviour and stability, one way or another. We can somehow detect rootkits, but as all rootkit detectors need Windows to operate, we can't be sure they're not being lied to as well.

In any case involving rootkits, I cannot guarantee anything. The best course of action would be reformatting and reinstalling the operating system.

TDSSserv is a dangerous rootkit, which some tools can detect and clean. I'm saying this because I want you to know as much of the facts as possible.

If you can reformat and reinstall, I think it would not be unwise to consider that.

Give this matter a thought, please.

If you decide to clean, please inform me. Also I would like to know whether this is a business machine or a home machine, so please inform.

Re: TDSS Trojan driving me buggy!

Hello OD,

Yeah, I kind of figured that a wipe/reload was my only true option here. When I first discovered the infection, I started my files backups. At this point, I still have more files on my computer than my current external storage will allow. I will be purchasing another external storage unit this weekend for that purpose.

This is a personal/home business computer. I have read all the rules of this Forum and was aware of the possible consequences to my business operations before asking for help here. At the current time, this has placed my personal business at a stand-still, so I accept all the risks if it means I can avoid unnecessary expenses.

Once my personal documents are backed up, can you give me an idea as to the full consequences of an attempt at a clean? In particular, if the attempt goes really wrong, will the hard drive be permanently corrupted to a point that a reload is no longer an option? Or is this simply ("simply" loosely used here) a matter of embedded communication between the malevolent rootkit and the rest of the system, where the O/S and related files/utilities are the only corruption, and a reformat/reinstall would still be successful if we attempted a clean first?

Thank you again for your time and patience to my problem.

Hi IAIMH,

if the attempt goes really wrong, will the hard drive be permanently corrupted to a point that a reload is no longer an option?

No, it's not like that.

What happened is that the rootkit is simply a very high privileged driver. This means that it gets in between ANY communication Windows makes to your hard drive.
However, the rootkit will not be active when Windows is not active, so it's just a stupid file sitting there at the point at which you format the drive - formatting isn't done through Windows.
No virus can physically damage your hard drive. Well - there are certain viruses that generate so much I/O that the drive can't cope with it - but I assure you tdssserv does not do that.

The worst that can go wrong is that your Windows installation disc is damaged or that you don't have all drivers necessary and then you will be left with a black screen saying "operating system not found" - until you install one. But nothing that is related to tdssserv.

Or is this simply ("simply" loosely used here) a matter of embedded communication between the malevolent rootkit and the rest of the system, where the O/S and related files/utilities are the only corruption, and a reformat/reinstall would still be successful if we attempted a clean first?

This is correct. Only one tiny flaw: it's not communication, it's miscommunication between the hard drive and Windows - the rootkit driver informs Windows that those bad files are not there, while they are. But yes, nothing that a cleaning process might do should have any impact on the successfulness of a reformat.

Unfortunately I cannot help you to clean the machine as it is a business computer - main reason being that these computers usually have business-specific alterations which we might break and that if we accidentally break something that we will be breaking a business.
I understand you would be willing to accept the risk, however under no circumstance I can help you with the cleaning - rules are rules.

If you wish to clean the machine anyway you will need to find a different forum to arrange for that. However, seeing as you are already backing up everything I think reformatting is not only the cleanest, but also the quickest option.

Once my personal documents are backed up, can you give me an idea as to the full consequences of an attempt at a clean?

The full consequences will be that you will need to set up your whole system again - all settings etc. You can use the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard to help with that, but some things will need to be done manually.

Do you have any more questions?

Hello OD,

No questions. As frustrating as this situation is, your help and information has been highly useful. Once I get up and running, and my own business is back on its legs, I will be back here and enroll so that I too can be as valuable an asset as you and your associates are here.

Since I am not currently associated with any other forums related to this kind of help, I will complete the training (if accepted for it) and will be open to suggestions by the instructors here as to where best to apply my new knowledge for the benefit of others.

Thank you for your candor on my current situation and my options (or lack of, ) for correcting this issue.
