Hi lsmcswain,

Welcome to the MRU forums.

===Very Important===
The instructions in this thread have been specifically designed for THIS USER'S MACHINE ONLY . You should not use these instructions to clean your machine. Doing so could cause irreparable damage to your machine. If you need assistance, please start your own thread.
=================
A couple of important things to keep in mind during our fix.
  • Please >> DO NOT<< run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to.
  • Please DO NOT install any software while we are working.
  • While the fix is in progress Do not skip any steps. With some infections skipping a step can be disastrous.
  • If you are running P2P filesharing program(s). you must uninstall it/them before proceeding.
  • If you are running any cracked/pirated software, REMOVE it before proceeding. Many helpers -- myself included -- will not assist you if you are using such software.
Remember, we are in this process together. We must cooperate with each other or the fix will surely fail. If there is something you don't understand or are unsure of -- please stop and take a moment to ask about it. That being said, let's get started. :)

Before going any further, you need to decide which antivirus software you want to run. You have both Symantec and McAfee. Running more than one AV software can be dangerous. They conflict with each other and very often result in reduced overall system security. Please uninstall one of them.

Next, you need to uninstall BitTorrent as per forum policy. See Malware Removal's P2P Programs Policy.

Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

You are strongly advised to do the following:

  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Due to its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS). However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:

What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
When should do a reformat and reinstallation of my OS
Where to backup your files
How to backup your files in Windows XP
Restoring your backups

Please let me know what you decide to do. SpotCheckBilly

Hi lsmcswain,

OK, great. We'll do our best to clean you up. :D

Once you have decided which of your antivirus programs you wish to keep, follow the instructions accordingly.

To remove Norton:

Download and save Norton Removal Tool to your desktop.

Run it to remove Norton (Symantec). After this, please restart your computer.

To remove McAfee:

Dowload and save McAfee Removal Tool to your desktop.

Run it to remove McAfee. After this, please restart your computer.

Next, uninstall BitTorrent and any other P2P file sharing programs you have installed.

Please print out these instructions since we will be working in "Safe Mode" and Internet connection will not be available.

Download SDFix by AndyManchesta from one of the following links and save it to your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

SDFix is updated regularly. If you have previously downloaded SDFix, please delete that copy before proceeding.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% (Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following :

***Very Important***

If you are unable to boot into Safe Mode, DO NOT proceed with the rest of the step. STOP and let me know.

******

  • Restart your computer.
  • Contiunally tap F8 until a menu appears.
  • Use your up/down arrow key to highlight Safe Mode.
  • Hit enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open C.:\SDFix and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • SDFix will complete its task then prompt you to hit any key to Reboot.
  • Hit any Key.
  • Your computer will reboot.
  • When the PC restarts the tool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished.
  • Hit any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open and also save into the SDFix folder as C.:\SDFix\Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Finally, download and scan with ComboFix as follows:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
A word of warning: Please DO NOT run ComboFix on your own. Used incorrectly, it can render your computer completely useless

>>>If you already have Combofix, delete previous copy(s) and download the latest version.<<<

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***
The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.
  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

***If you have an always on Internet connection, unplug from your DSL/cable modem before proceeding. Reconnect only after Combofix has finished its scan.***

Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before continuing the scan. They can interfere with ComboFix and may cause unpredictable results. Note: Combofix will disconnect you from the Internet, then restore your connection as it finishes.
  • Click on Yes, to allow Combofix to finish its scan. This can take a while, so please be patient.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you at C:\ComboFix.txt.
***Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall***

In your next post, please include
  • A new Hijackthis log.
  • C.:\Combofix.txt.
  • C.:\SDFix\Report.txt
>>>use separate posts if necessary to ensure the logs don't get cut off!<<< SCB

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
