Issues with Applehebi

Unread postby djordan » November 16th, 2008, 11:42 am

I downloaded winrar and started getting applehebi window popping up every minute. I ran adaware/spybot and norton 2008 and adaware found and removed the virus(?). However, I am still unable to get to sites on the intranet (i.e. google.com).

I read in some other posts to run hijack and post the log so here it is.

Any help would be appreciated.

I rand hijackthis and here is the log. What next???

Hi djordan,

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

Hi djordan,

It appears that you have two antivirus programs running - AVG and Norton Antivirus. Running one antivirus program is essential, but having two can cause conflicts, slow your system down and even cause stability problems without improving your security. You should use just one antivirus program and if you want an "2nd opinion", use an online scanner like Kaspersky's.

Please remove one of them before proceeding.
Please make sure you choose one currently capable of receiving updates, because an antivirus program without updates cannot protect your system effectively. If you have any problems, please stop and let me know.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:
BitComet 1.01
SoulSeek Client 156c
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
BitComet and Soulseek need to be removed as site policy is to require users to remove all P2P programs as part of cleaning.

The Java installations are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 10) from here

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:
cmd /c copy c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts "%userprofile%\desktop\hosts.txt"
A new file called hosts.txt should appear on your Desktop, please post the contents in your next response. If it's very long, then please use the attachment function to attach the file to your post.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Gmer to your Desktop from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip
  • Unzip the program onto your Desktop (right-click, select Extract All... and follow the prompts)
  • Disconnect from the internet and close all running programs
  • Double click gmer.exe, let the gmer.sys driver load if asked
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say OK
  • If there is no warning, then check that the Rootkit tab is selected and click the Scan button - don't change any settings before you do so
  • Please do not use your computer during the scan
  • Once the scan is complete, click the Copy button
  • Open Notepad (Click Start->Run, type notepad and Enter) and hit Ctrl+V to paste the log and then save the log to your desktop

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both of these options:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When finished, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your Desktop, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found here if you need it:
    • Start->All Programs->Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware->Logs

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the hosts.txt output, Gmer report, the Malwarebytes Antimalware report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi djordan,

Please open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download HostsXpert to your Desktop
  • Unzip HostsXpert.zip to your Desktop (right-click, select Extract All... and follow the prompts)
  • Open the HostsXpert folder and double click on HostsXpert.exe
  • Click Backup/Restore->Create Backup to back up your existing hosts file
  • Then click on Restore MS Hosts File and OK the prompt to restore your Hosts file to the default
  • Click on Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against changes
  • Close program when complete.
  • If for any reason you wish to restore the old hosts file, you can do so by pressing Make Writeable?, then Backup/Restore->Restore Backup and OK to the prompt.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download DNSCheck by Billy O'Neal to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click DNSCheck.exe to start the program.
  • Once it has finished running, a log named DNSCheck.log will appear on-screen, also located here:
    C:\DNSCheck.log
  • Please post the contents of this log with your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please click this link to open Kaspersky Online Scanner:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partne ... bscan.html

Press on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Click on the Save Report As... button.
  • Change the file type to Text file (*.txt), type a filename such as kaspersky and save it to your Desktop
  • Post the contents of the report in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the DNSCheck.log, the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, let me know how your machine is running now and what symptoms you are experiencing.

As for the how my machine is running, the only issues I am noticing are:
- Very slow restart. When i run a restart it takes approximately 4 1/2 minutes to shutdown, restart and get to a point where the processor stops running an I can do anything.
- Overall processing seems slow to me.

The issue with accessing certain websites seems to be resolved...Thanks!

Any idea what else to look at for the processing issues? Also, Kaspersky found 1 object and 3 files infected so what can be done about that.

Thanks for you assistance with these issues!

Hi djordan,

We'll clean those infected temp files as part of the following procedure:

Please now delete rsit.exe, Gmer.exe HostsXpert DNSCheck.exe and any remaining logs from your Desktop, also delete this folder:
C:\rsit

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

------------------------------------------------------------------------

At this stage your machine appears to be clean of malware :).

The shutdown/reboot and processing speed issues you describe do sound like they need attention, however as they do not appear to be malware related I think the best and fastest solution for you is to post on a PC troubleshooting forum like PC Pitstop or WhattheTech. General troubleshooting forums specialize in handling problems like this so you are certain to get expert assistance and a speedy resolution is very likely.

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
