Zlob Trojan removal

Unread postby Call » November 10th, 2008, 7:07 pm

Hi
Please could you help me to remove the Zlob Trojan from the PC I'm using.
AVG has picked it up several times and I've moved it to virus vault and then deleted but it keeps coming back.
The internet connection is via wireless router.

Any assistance much appreciated.

Re: Zlob Trojan removal

Unread postby Odd dude » November 13th, 2008, 11:36 am

Hello and welcome to the forums! Sorry for the delay, we get tons of new logs every day.

I'm Odd dude, pleased to meet you; if it helps, you can call me OD ;). I will be helping you with your infection. However, it is important to take note of the following - quite the wall of text, I know, but please bear with me:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (Hijackthis is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient whilst I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please carefully read any instruction that I give you.
Reading too lightly will cause you to miss important steps, which could have destructive effects.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Only YOU must use these instructions, they are not suitable for any other computer with similar problems.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan. The one thing you should always do, though, is making sure that your antivirus definitions are up-to-date!
  • If I tell you to download a tool which you already have, please re-download it and do not use the copy you already have. This is because the tools are updated regularly.
  • In Windows Vista, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as administrator!
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you were to do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
  • As I am still in training at the Malware Removal University, anything I do must be checked by an experienced malware fighter. This means there might be a slight delay in my answers.
  • Lastly, I am no magican. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system. Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

I am now analyzing your situation and hope to be back with you soon. While I am reviewing your situation, could you please do the following for me:

Make an Uninstall List
I need you to create an uninstall list so I can further analyze your situation.

  • Start HijackThis.
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save list...
  • Save the list to your desktop, or any other convenient place.

Please post back:
  • Uninstall list
  • New hijackthis log

Re: Zlob Trojan removal

Unread postby Odd dude » November 14th, 2008, 1:05 pm

Sorry for the wait.

You have TeaTimer running
This is good as TeaTimer protects you from many malicious changes to your registry. However, TeaTimer is a computer program, which has no way of distinguishing between good or malicious intentions; this means it might hinder the modifications I need to make to your system.

This means that TeaTimer will need to be disabled until you have been cleaned of malware.

  1. Right-click on the Tea Timer icon in your system tray. It looks like this: Image
  2. If you have the new version 1.5: click once on Resident Protection, then right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colourless.
  3. If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident

This is not enough, there is a second step attached:

  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go to the bottom of the vertical panel on the left and click Tools
  • Now, also in left panel, click Resident - the pictogram shows a red/white shield.
  • In the Resident protection status frame, uncheck the box labelled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

When I give you the all-clear post, remember to reenable it!

ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without expert guidance.

ComboFix uses very brute tactics to rip malware off your system. Do not panic if your antivirus software warns you about the file.

:!: Please disable all your antivirus software, firewalls, and antispyware software BEFORE running ComboFix!! :!:

Also, please keep your internet connection ACTIVE. I know this sounds like a strange thing to do with your protection software disabled, but please trust me on this one :)

  • Download ComboFix from here and save it to your desktop
  • Disable ALL antivirus/antimalware programs before proceeding!
  • Now start ComboFix
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it. Please click "Yes" when this happens and follow the prompts! When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning.
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running!
  • When finished, the report will open. Reenable your protection software and post the log in your next reply

Open hijackthis, click do a system scan only, put a check next to these and click fix checked:

O2 - BHO: CDLPObj Object - {BE2ED590-CA49-46B5-8CCE-244FB2E0D1AA} - C:\WINDOWS\IECodecPl.dll
O2 - BHO: CIEObjectObj Object - {CA13D72F-2DAC-4D99-B08D-C5EA1C920E89} - C:\WINDOWS\IECodecPlg.dll
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - (no file)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.bmw.co.uk <-- This is up to you. But personally I don't recommend putting websites in the trusted zone, UNLESS you REALLY REALLY REALLY trust it and it can't function when it's not in that zone. In my opinion, it is not safe to put ANY website in the trusted zone as it will gain almost unrestricted access to your computer - which is very bad if this site ever gets hacked

Then please reboot.

Post back: log from combofix and a new hijackthis log.

A couple of points:-

HijackThis did not show the following two entries after the scan and so could not be fixed as you requested:
O2 - BHO: CDLPObj Object - {BE2ED590-CA49-46B5-8CCE-244FB2E0D1AA} - C:\WINDOWS\IECodecPl.dll
O2 - BHO: CIEObjectObj Object - {CA13D72F-2DAC-4D99-B08D-C5EA1C920E89} - C:\WINDOWS\IECodecPlg.dll

I did fix these two:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - (no file)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.bmw.co.uk

I also could not re-boot or shut down after combofix had finished and had to do so manually.

An IE Explorer icon has appeared on my desktop?

Look forward to your reply.
Many thanks.

Run CFScript
Open notepad and copy/paste the following to it:

Code: Select all
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile]
"EnableFirewall"=dword:00000001

File::
C:\WINDOWS\IECodecPlg.dll

Save this to your desktop as "CFScript.txt".

Disable your antimalware software like you did before, and drag CFScript into ComboFix

Image

ComboFix will run again, please be patient and post the log like usual.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
I need you to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

  • Install the program by following the prompts after double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe
  • Once you approach the final installation screen, put a check next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish
  • MBAM (that's an acronym of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) will now start. Choose Perform full scan and click Scan
  • Get a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate and watch some TV for about an hour.
  • Once the scan has finished, click OK, then Show Results.
  • Put a check next to everything, then click Remove selected.
  • Now, a log will open. Save this to your desktop and post it. Do not attach it.

GMER
Do not touch the computer while GMER is running! If you do, it'll go completely unresponsive and you'll have to shut it down using the power switch. Just don't touch the PC while GMER is working.
Please download gmer.zip by GMER and save it to your desktop.

  • Right click the file you just downloaded and choose Extract all
  • Click Next
  • Click Browse
  • Click the + next to My Computer
  • Click Local Disk (C:)
  • Click Make new folder
  • Enter GMER
  • Click OK, then Next
  • Check Show extracted files and click Finish
  • Double click on GMER.exe to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the GMER scan log and post it in your next reply.
  • Close GMER.

In your next reply, please post
- Did you run any self fixes?
- If possible, a more accurate description on why you couldn't reboot so I can notify ComboFix's developer about the issue
- Log from combofix
- Log from malwarebytes' anti-malware
- Log from GMER
- new hijackthis log

Hi OD

Firstly to answer your questions:-

I didn't run any self fixes other than clearing my temporary internet files.

When I tried to re-boot after your first set of instructions the following occurred:- I selected "start", "turn off computer" and "restart" but there was no response. The same happened when I alternatively tried "start", "turn off computer" and "turn off" - again no response. The system didn't hang in any way though. I had to manually restart the computer with the reset button on the tower.

One more point:- when i began the Malwarebytes scan I experienced several aborted starts when after a few seceonds of the scan initializing the message "An error occurred. Please report the following error code to the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware support team. 'Error code: 731 (0,9)'"
The scan finally worked after about four attempts.

Hi Call

Regarding the shutdown issue: I will look into it and if applicable notify the developer of ComboFix.

Regarding the Malwarebytes' issue: Can you run a quick scan just fine? There is a certain error with certain computers when running a full scan. Anyway, it does not really matter as it ran in the end. If you wish to continue using MBAM after you're clean (which I personally recommend), I'll redirect you to the Malwarebytes' forums as this issue is out of my league.

The logs are all looking good. Any problems left?

Kaspersky Online Scan
I would like you to run an online antivirus scan.

Please click HERE to be taken to the Kaspersky site.

  • The site will present you with a list of important items. Read those. If you're unsure about something, stop and ask! If you're sure everything is all right, close all other windows.
  • Now, click Accept.
  • It will start a download rougly 10 MB in size. If prompted by your firewall to allow internet access, allow.
  • Once the download has finished, click Next.
  • Under Please select a target to scan, choose My Computer
  • Get a cup of coffee and watch some TV. Do not run any other programs while Kaspersky is scanning! If you're on dial-up, you can now terminate the internet connection if you wish.
  • Once finished, you will be presented with the results. Click Save as text and save the log to your desktop.

Post the results in your next reply. Also inform me how the computer is running.

It may be worth mentioning that the Zlob Trojan downloader was originally picked up (twice) by AVG 8 following the use of CCleaner. Is this a coincidence or should I try running CCleaner again?

Hi Call

Two of your e-mail folders contain infected e-mails:

Unfortunately I cannot precisely pinpoint the exact e-mails that are infected.

Please delete any suspicious e-mails from these folders.

It may be worth mentioning that the Zlob Trojan downloader was originally picked up (twice) by AVG 8 following the use of CCleaner. Is this a coincidence or should I try running CCleaner again?

Funny - a while ago my antivirus software (now uninstalled) would also warn me whenever I used CCleaner.
It's most likely a false positive - however if you wish to use an alternative temp file cleaner I can recommend this (I've added instructions for use):

ATF-Cleaner
Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
Start the program and place a check next to the following items:
  • Windows Temp
  • Current User Temp
  • All Users Temp
  • Temporary Internet Files
  • Java Cache
  • Recycle Bin
Now click Empty Selected and click OK.

If you use FireFox, click the FireFox tab and place a check Select All. Click Empty Selected and answer No at the prompt.
If you use Opera, click the Opera tab and place a check Select All. Click Empty Selected and answer No at the prompt.

OK - now let's cleanup some leftover baddies:

Run CFScript
Open notepad and copy/paste the following to it:

Code: Select all
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ezbitwise.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iedriver.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sceniccs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\scenichp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\scenicwu.exe

Save this to your desktop as "CFScript.txt".

Disable your antimalware software like you did before, and drag CFScript into ComboFix

Image

ComboFix will run again, please be patient and post the log like usual.

Re: Zlob Trojan removal

Unread postby Call » November 15th, 2008, 11:51 am

Hi OD

I've deleted all suspicious looking e-mails although these are all scanned by AVG before i open them.

I installed ATF Cleaner and emptied the selected files as you asked. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Hi Call

We're going to run ComboFix again, so please disconnect from the internet and disable all protection programs.

Click Start>Run. Copy and paste this:
Code: Select all
Combofix /u

Then click OK.

You can reenable your protection software when combofix informs you it has been uninstalled.

Install a firewall
There is no firewall installed on your computer!
Either that, or you're using Windows Firewall, which is not a good idea.

Firewalls are programs that monitor incoming and outcoming connections to your computer. Did you know that, just by connecting to the internet, you are being exposed to hundreds of treats immediately? The way to solve this, is to use a firewall, and up-to-date antivirus software.

Windows Firewall only monitors incoming connections. This means that, once you are infected, the malware is free to ask for new instructions, send private data to its creator, or invite its malware buddies to come over. In other words: it's almost as good as no firewall at all.

Download a free for personal use firewall NOW from one of these sources:
Comodo Personal Firewall
Online Armor Free

Please uninstall Adobe Reader 8.1.2 as it's outdated.

Then you can download and install the latest verison of Adobe Reader from here

Now I STRONGLY recommend you to visit Windows Update and download and install all updates, including Service Pack 3.
(Note: disable all protection software before installing Service Pack 3)

Next, I'm pleased to inform you with this:

Congratulations!

As far as I can tell, you are CLEAN!

Image

Have a big cup of Image, sit back & relax, and now please follow a few of the following tips; they will dramatically reduce your chance of getting infected again.

  • Turn on Automatic Updates if you have not done so. It is MANDATORY to keep your Windows updated, otherwise you are vulnerable to exploits! To turn on Automatic Updates: click Start  Control Panel  Security Centre  Automatic Updates.

Below are optional items. It's highly recommended to read them through, but decide for yourself how many of these recommendations (if any) you follow.

  • Install WinPatrol from here. Instructions for use are here.

  • Install SpywareBlaster to protect you from bad sites. Download - How to use it

  • Install a custom hosts file. Let's say I have a directory of 640kb's worth of bad sites. Let's say I can make sure you will never be able to access those sites, so you will never get any infection from those sites. It's like blocking a site - without site blocking tools. How would you like to never be able to visit (a lot, but not all of the) malware-infected sites again? Well, now you can!
First, we must disable a service, as Windows cannot work with a very large hosts file while that service is active. This will not affect anything else.
    The disabling routine:
    1. Click Start, then Run
    2. Copy and paste the following:
      Code: Select all
      sc config dnscache start= disabled
    3. Click OK.
Next, you can download the custom hosts file from here. Installation instructions can be found there as well.

  • Install KeyScrambler. Keyloggers are the third biggest threats in the world of malware - next to backdoors & rootkits. KeyScrambler is an add-on that integrates with your browser and protects you from keyloggers; meaning safe online gaming, and safe online banking. There is also a paid version, which protects e-mail programs and Word, and a more expensive paid version that protects even more items! Download it from here.

Please note: you must NOT rely on programs like KeyScrambler for your protection. The program can protect against many types of keylogging software but no security program is 100% reliable and new malware is created every day. If you suspect your machine is infected with a keylogger you should immediately change all your passwords from a known clean machine and seek assistance with removing the malware.

Please reply to this thread once more so we know it can be archived

Happy surfing!! :)

Hi OD

Before I carry out your final instructions there may be another problem.
My AVG Resident Shield picked up a 'Potentially Unwanted Program'.

File name: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{CD1624DF-6471-4F........................................ .dll
Threat name: Adware Generic.NJQ (Detected on open)
Process name: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe

I have the option to either delete or ignore.
Should I be concerned about this?
Are there issues with the system restore files?

That file is in System Restore's cache and is inactive. The cache will automatically be emptied when combofix uninstalls.

So it doesn't really matter what action you choose to perform, as the file will get removed one way or another.
