Fake 'Windows Security Alert' - Help

Unread postby Xephys » November 10th, 2008, 4:13 pm

This thing has bugged me for two days now and doesn't want to go away. I admit, I didn't understand it was a fake at first, so I downloaded the stupid fake AntiVirus. When I did find out, I downloaded masses of Malware, Adware and Virus removal software to clean everything out. I think I removed the AntiVirus completely, however, the security alert remains to annoy me.

I first got it when I started to follow a little guide from PCGaming, which offered advice on Vista and how to run the PC better, including the fact that turning off UAC would help. This has always annoyed me but I didn't look into turning it off before. I did and I'm not sure if it was the fault of that, but now I've got a really annoying Malware or the likes.

Hi Xephys

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

After that, please post back a fresh HijackThis log, please :)

Yeah, sorry about that. I'd normally have Avast up and running, but because of this annoying Popup, I uninstalled all of them for the time being.

I found an Ask toolbar which I didn't know I downloaded, which I Uninstalled, incase that's significant.

Also, I'm not sure, but when I tried to run HiJackThis the first time, it told me something about not being able to acess the hosts and that I had to get that data manually. Not sure what that meant, so I did another scan but this time it didn't come up. May have something to do with the UAC I turned off, since it was crashing my PC.

Yes that was good move :)

Please click this link-->Jotti

Copy/paste the file on the list into the white Upload a file box and click Submit/Send (depends on which one you are using Jotti or VirusTotal).

C:\Users\Xephys\AppData\Roaming\Google\visfdw.exe

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Yes but really bad detection so we need a sample.

Download suspicious file packer from here

Unzip it to desktop, open it & paste in the list of files below, press next & it will create an archive (zip/cab file) on desktop

C:\Users\Xephys\AppData\Roaming\Google\visfdw.exe

Go to spykiller

Press new topic, make threads title "Files for Shaba"
Include to your message a link to here, then attach the cab/zip file to your message and post the topic
If you cant locate it through the browse button just copy/paste the filename and path.

Reply here after you have done and we will continue :)

Thank you :)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Also thought to note that the window of this Malware has been up through every scan, I've minimised it so it doesn't pop up when I'm playing a game or something, but it has been running the whole time. Just making sure that's ok.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Code: Select all
    :files
    C:\Users\Xephys\AppData\Roaming\Google\visfdw.exe
    C:\ProgramData\Azureus
    C:\Users\Xephys\AppData\Roaming\Azureus

    :reg
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "winlogone"=-

    :commands
    [EmptyTemp]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Re-run rsit.

Re: Fake 'Windows Security Alert' - Help

Unread postby Shaba » November 11th, 2008, 12:12 pm

Looks better :)

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

No, that is no threat in this case.

Any problems left?
