Register to Remove

Unread postby NonSuch » November 17th, 2005, 5:46 pm

Hi there, and welcome to the forums!

First, please go to your Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs and, if found, remove Party Poker as it's known to bring ads into systems.

Next, print out the following instructions so you have them readily at hand...
  • Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=
    O3 - Toolbar: Search - {5DEF00DE-E16C-4BFF-7123-9905F5E000A7} - blank (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdocvw.dll
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdocvw.dll
    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker.net\partypokernet.exe
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker.net\partypokernet.exe
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://awbeta.net-nucleus.com (HKLM)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folder and delete it:

C:\Program Files\PartyPoker.net\

Reboot your system.

Next, download, install, and run CCleaner (so the following scans won't take as long because CCleaner will clear out temporary files) *NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on "Options" at the top of the window, then click on the "advanced" button. deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours." Click on "OK."
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Please download ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu."
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big "E" icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the "OK" button
  • The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run ewido.
  • Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
    • Click OK
  • Click on Complete system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. NOTE: We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, AOL, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged. In particular, watch for alerts that have the word "Heuristic" in them - if you recognize the file name as "friendly," these may actually be false positives) select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections." If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop

Reboot into normal mode.

Then, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Save the results from ActiveScan.

Please post the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan, and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

You're very welcome. :)

  • Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.
  • Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\bk.exe <<<--- file

    C:\WINDOWS\inf\mmaker2.inf <<<--- file
  • Exit Explorer and reboot the system into normal mode.
  • Sun Java may be updated from time to time in order to address vulnerabilities in a particular version. Unfortunately, the older version (along with its vulnerabilities) will neither be overwritten nor replaced at the time of the update. Therefore, the older version(s) must be removed via Add/Remove Programs. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 5. It appears that you are running update 4 and need to update to 5.

To check your version please go to this link to verify your version and to get the updates needed as well:
    http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

You'll need to use IE and allow ActiveX for this update. Follow the instructions on that page to verify Your Java software

Or you can get the manual download here:
    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

After updating, please remember to uninstall all old versions of Sun Java via your Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs.

You have some infection remnants in your system restore points, so this would be a good time to clear them out and reset a new clean restore point...
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • Right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
  • Turn ON System Restore.

    • Right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Un-Check *Turn off System Restore.*
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Set a new system restore point.

Your log looks good now. How is your system running?

Okay, let's do a little more here. :)
  • Is your Norton Antivirus active and kept up to date with the latest virus definitions? If not, that will need to be remedied. See this link for a listing of antivirus programs:
    http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=53#53
  • I can see no evidence of a firewall installed on your computer, unless you're using the Windows XP firewall, and you really need something that will give you more protection than that. It is necessary for you install and use a firewall on your computer, preferably one that will also block advertising and pop-ups. (When doing so, you should disable the Windows firewall as you should not run two firewalls at the same time). Without a good firewall, your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. For an article on firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  • You are using Weatherbug and, if it's the free version, it is known to bring in ads, so I suggest that if you are using the free version, you remove it via the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs, then fix the following entry with HijackThis...

With all other windows closed, run HijackThis and place a check mark next to the following entry and select "Fix checked."

    O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdocvw.dll (HKCU)

Please see here for more information regarding Weatherbug and its removal...
    http://www.pchell.com/support/weatherbug.shtml
  • Next, click on the following link to go to a site where you download the MVPS Hosts file. Download it to your desktop...
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Right click on the file and extract it to...

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

If you currently have a Hosts file, you will be asked if you want to overwrite it, answer yes.

After you have completed the above steps, please update ewido then repeat the scan, saving the log, exactly as before. Reboot and then perform the Panda Activescan again and save the log. Reboot when finished.

Download Silentrunners.zip from here and unzip it to a new folder on your desktop.
  • Run the SilentRunners.vbs file.
  • You will receive a prompt: "Do you want to skip supplementary searches?" - click NO
  • If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow SilentRunners.vbs to run. This script is not malicious so please allow it to run.
  • A text file will appear in the folder - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once the "All Done!" prompt flashes up, open the text file and copy & paste it in your next reply.

Post the results of the two scans, the Silent Runners log, and a fresh HijackThis log into this same thread. (You may need to use a separate post for the Silent Runners log). Also let me know how everything is working.

You're most welcome. :)

Well, your HijackThis log and the Silent Runners log both look good. Image I notice that you're still picking up stuff with ewido and Panda ActiveScan, so I would suggest that you tighten up your security settings, use Firefox wherever possible, and be very careful about the sites you visit. Also, avoid peer to peer filesharing, and be very careful with instant messaging programs as well. You should avoid clicking on links in instant messages at all costs. Unfortunately, these are areas that are very open for attacks by malware.

Continue to use ewido and perform online ActiveScans as well. Although the ewido trial period is short, it will convert to a free version once the trial period has expired. All updates will need to be performed manually prior to scanning, and you will not have the benefit of the real-time Guard and automatic updates; however, even without the guard, it's still a worthwhile program for scanning and removing malware, so I suggest you do keep it.

If you are having no further difficulties, here are a few suggestions that I usually post for maintaining a clean system. (Not all will apply to every version of Windows).

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  5. Use a Firewall - It is vitally important that you install and use a firewall on your computer. Without a firewall, your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
