HJT log from irenehaley

Unread postby irenehaley » October 28th, 2008, 10:18 am

My computer is very slow. When I click to open Internet Explorer I have to walk away and do something else or I go crazy waiting. I have F-Secure virus protection and when I scan it finds no virus's or malware. I have also done the recommended steps for a slow running computer from an article on this site. Below is my HJT log. I hope you can help me.

Hello irenehaley and welcome to the forums!

I'm Odd Dude, pleased to meet you; if it helps, you can call me OD ;). I will be helping you with your infection. However, it is important to take note of ten things - quite the wall of text, I know, but please bear with me:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (Hijackthis is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient whilst I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please carefully read any instruction that I give you.
Reading too lightly will cause you to miss important steps, which could have destructive effects.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Only YOU must use these instructions, they are not suitable for any other computer with similar problems.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan. The one thing you should always do, though, is making sure that your antivirus definitions are up-to-date!
  • If I tell you to download a tool which you already have, please re-download it and do not use the copy you already have. This is because the tools are updated regularly.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you were to do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
  • As I am still in training at the MRU, anything I do must be checked by an experienced malware fighter. This means there might be a slight delay in my answers.
  • Lastly, I am no magican. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system. Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

I am now analyzing your situation and hope to be back with you soon. Please do not start another topic, instead reply to this one, should you feel the need to say anything. While I am reviewing your situation, could you please do the following for me:

Make an Uninstall List
I need you to create an uninstall list so I can further analyze your situation.

  • Start HijackThis.
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save list...
  • Save the list to your desktop, or any other convenient place.

Hi again!

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
I need you to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

  • Install the program by following the prompts after double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe
  • Once you approach the final installation screen, put a check next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish
  • MBAM (that's an acronym of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) will now start. Choose Perform full scan and click Scan
  • Get a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate and watch some TV for about an hour.
  • Once the scan has finished, click OK, then Show Results.
  • Put a check next to everything, then click Remove selechted.
  • Now, a log will open. Save this to your desktop and post it. Do not attatch it.

Fixing malicious lines in Hijackthis
You must fix some malicious entries using Hijackthis.

  1. CLOSE ALL OTHER OPEN WINDOWS BEFORE CONTINUING.
  2. Start HijackThis
  3. Click Do a system scan only
  4. Put a check next to the following item. If it's not there, you can move on to the next set of instructions :)
  5. Again, please make sure that all other open windows are closed!
  6. Press Fix checked.

Then please delete the following folder: C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
Reason for doing so is that the copy is outdated and one of the tools I'm having you run automatically downloads a newer version.

RSIT
Please download random/random's system information tool (RSIT) and run it. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen and let it run. It will produce two logs:

  • log.txt (will be maximized)
  • info.txt (will be minimized)

Please post both in your next reply. If they won't fit into one post, divide them over multiple posts :)

Summary of what to post back:
  • Logs from RSIT (log.txt and info.txt)
  • Log from Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

And a very good morning to you!

I am happy to work with someone who is learning.

I'm glad to hear that :)

I'm hoping to learn something about my system through this process also.

If you'd like to, you could apply to join the Malware Removal University :)

OK, the uninstall list is not showing much.
At this moment, I would like you to carry out the other instructions I mentioned in my previous post, but instead of deleting the Hijackthis folder, please uninstall all versions of Hijackthis (you should find two).

(If at this point you have accidentally already deleted the hijackthis folder don't worry.)

Many thanks,
OD :)

Hi irenehaley, you did a good job!

I think this may be the root of your issues:
Total RAM: 254 MB (31% free)

Windows XP alone already consumes around half of that, and another half goes to your antivirus scanner. That leaves very few RAM to programs. They will then have to use the hard drive to store their temporary information on, which is slower than RAM.
Shortly said, your computer's speed might improve if you buy another stick of RAM.

Some leftovers to clean up, but apart from that the logs are looking good!

Do you have a flash/thumb drive?

Backup the registry

  1. Download ERUNT to your desktop from HERE
  2. Double-click on the file to install the program
  3. Uncheck the NTREGOPT desktop shortcut option
  4. Click No when you get the option to run ERUNT at Windows startup.
  5. During the installation, check Launch ERUNT
  6. Accept the defaults for running a backup
  7. ERUNT will then back up your registry

Modifying the registry
  • Copy/paste the contents of the code box below to notepad
  • Make sure that Word Wrap is turned off in notepad: click the Format menu and uncheck Word Wrap
  • Save the file to your desktop as "fix.reg" and please include the quotation marks!
  • Close notepad and make sure that all other windows are closed!
Code: Select all
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\New.net Startup]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Weather]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\webHancer Agent]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\webHancer Survey Companion]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{f8e5ccf2-9461-11dd-841f-000bdbbaefac}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\WhenUSave]

Important:
  • Make sure there are NO blank lines before the first line of my code; otherwise the fix will fail
  • Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file
  • Make sure that you have copied all of the text!

Now double-click fix.reg, and when the computer prompts a registry merge choose Yes.

Please reboot and re-run RSIT. This time you won't get info.txt, that's okay.

In answer to your question, yes, I have a thumb drive. I will also look into buying some more RAM. Is it hard to install yourself?

Here's my RSIT file:

Hey OD, thanks for all your hard work. Just wanted to let you know I'll be out of town until Saturday evening. I'll check when I get back to see if you've posted further instructions. Have a good weekend yourself.

I'm back, OD. Is there anything I need to do now - other than up my RAM?

Hi Irene

The logs are looking a lot better but there are still a few small things to do. I'll have a next set of instructions ready soon :)

Hi Irene

Your flash drive may be infected. As a precautionary measure, I would like to disinfect it - the procedure won't harm the data already on it in any way :)
Regarding your question about RAM: I'm no tech expert, but as far as I know all you need to do is open the case (be sure to be grounded!) and stick the RAM in the right slot. You may want to ask the store where you will be buying it for more information regarding this.

The logs are now looking a lot better :)
How's the computer running?

By the way, is there only one user account on this computer? If there are more, please give me a RSIT log from each.

Flash_Disinfector
Download Flash_Disinfector by sUBs.
  • Disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus/antimalware programs. That ensures they won't interfere.
  • Run Flash_Disinfector. When asked, plug in the flash drive.
  • Your desktop will disappear as the program starts cleaning the flash drives.
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK
  • If your desktop does not come up, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to bring up Task Manager. Click File  New task (Run...) and enter:
    Code: Select all
    explorer
  • Then click OK and your desktop will appear.
