Hi ddopson, Welcome to the forums!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Can you please tell me exactly what kind of problems you are having with this system? If you can give me a brief description of what is going on, it will help me determine the best course of action to take.

HiJackThis logs do take some time to review and research. I would appreciate it if while you are waiting, you could please do the following for me:

Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

As we work together to resolve your problem, please read these instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them to Notepad.

Lastly, please keep these points in mind:
  • If you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Please post your replies only to this topic, and please DO NOT start a new thread.
  • Since there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

I am reviewing your log now, and will be back with you shortly. Thank you for your patience.

Ken

Thanks for responding to my request. The problem actually started a couple of weeks ago. We have multiple log-ins, as this is a family computer, and the kids were having trouble logging in. When you click on the tag to log in, it acts as if it is about to do it and then the log-in page returns. If you are the first person to log-in after a reboot, you can get in, but in order to switch user, you have to shut down and start over.

When you open IE, you get the Microsoft run once screen where you select your search engines, etc. The home page cannot be changed on a permanent basis. I even tried spywareblaster to hold the settings, which at least puts the new home page under the home button, but it still will not take you there. I cannot permanently change any settings in IE.

Another symptom is that MS outlook, that I use for e-mail, has disappeared, along with some other programs that were installed.

I will get you the delete log soon.

I am trying to do these requests, but am having a difficult time. I can't download anything via IE, so I saved the files to a DVD, now it won't even open them. I can open other files on DVd as that is how I loaded HJT. I will get it ne way or another though.

I did run HJT again and removed the files you requested, but they came back again.

the Mbam log is all I can send you. I was able to get ATF to run also. RSIT will not run on this computer. It gives an error message that says "Line-1: Error: Variable used without being declared."
It worked on another computer, so I know the file is good.

Here is the Mbam log:

Hi ddopson,

It's surprising that Malwarebytes' didn't find anything....

Step #1: Download and Run: ComboFix

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the ComboFix Log (C:\ComboFix.txt)

Thanks,
Ken

The computer would not allow me to install the windows recovery console. I am also now being prompted by an information bar to change my security settings. Not sure if that is progress or the malware trying to load something else.

Here are the logs:

Looks like ComboFix found some nasties. What happened when you tried to install the recovery console? I will address the information bar prompt that you are getting.....there are still some things in the HijackThis log that may be contributing to it.

Step #1: Remove malware lines using Hijack This

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: '@ivt' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Intranet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'file' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'ftp' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'https' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click on "Fix Checked".

Once complete, please exit HiJackThis.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Update Java using JavaRa

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10.

(Note: Please note that update 10 does not include any security updates. Update 7 (which is the last update before 10) is available at http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2 ... index.html if you would prefer to install that instead).

*===============================================*

Step #3: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website to perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to your desktop by changing the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Now close the window.

*===============================================*

Step #4: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the JavaRa log
  • Contents of the Kaspersky Online Scan Log

Thanks,
Ken

When I tried to download the windows recovery console, the same thing happened that always happens when i try to download something using this computer, the internet connection gets blocked and I can't download any files. Just for clarification purposes this happens EVERY time I try to follow your instructions. It will not let me run Javara, or the Kaspersky scan. The only way I can get any of this stuff to work is to download it to my laptop, copy it to a disk, copy it to my desktop, and then run it from there.

And to top it off, the lines of code that you asked me to fix with HiJack This, are still there. I have almost no control over this computer!!!

I am sorry that you are still having such a hard time....Lets do this instead. Something must still be lurking that isn't showing its head yet....

Have you tried using an alternate browser? Something like FireFox in order to get these tools?

I would really like to get a RSIT log, however I know you said you had problems with that before.

Can you try running RSIT again, and see if ComboFix has cleaned things up enough to get a RSIT log?

Please bear with me, let me do a little more research into your problem. I will post another fix soon. In the mean time, see if you can get RSIT to run and give us a log.

Re: help please

Unread postby ktreffin » November 4th, 2008, 8:54 am

I am glad FireFox is working for you. Instead of RSIT lets try this:

Download and Run OTScanIt

  1. Please download OTScanIt.exe from Bleeping Computer by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on OTScanIt.exe to run it.
  3. Click on Extract. Once done, you will be prompted. Click OK and click Close.
  4. Double click on the OTScanIt folder. Double click on OTScanIt.exe to run it.
  5. Under Drivers section, select Non-Microsoft.
  6. Click on the Run Scan button at the top left hand corner.
  7. OTScanIt will start running. Once done, Notepad will open. Please post the contents of this Notepad file in your next reply.

Let me know if you have any problems
