Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is peku006and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.
I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

Please observe these rules while we work:

  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

1 - Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • The log can also be found here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

2 - download and run RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt<- (will be maximized) and info.txt<- (will be minimized)

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1.the logs from RSIT (log.txt ,info.txt)
2. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log

Thanks peku006

Hi Terri

1 - Remove bad HijackThis entries

2 - Download and run OTMoveIt3
  • Download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer from here and save it to your desktop
  • Launch OTMoveIt3.exe and copy the text from the codebox below into the lefthand box below "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved"
    Code: Select all
    :files
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\3C.tmp

  • Double-check that the input matches the code box above and then click the MoveIt! button to start the script. If you're prompted about rebooting allow the request.
  • Once OTMoveIt finishes, a log will be located at C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss. (mmddyyyy_hhmmss is a timestamp from when the log was created)
  • Include this log in your next reply

3 - Check files for Viruses.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ddswp.dll

  • Copy/Paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Note details of any viruses found.

4 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

5 - Status Check
Please reply with

1.the OTMoveIt2 log
2. the Jotti/Virustotal results
3. a fresh HijackThis log

I don't know if this is correct, but this is the only text file available on the OTMoveIt folder:

========== FILES ==========
C:\WINDOWS\system32\3C.tmp moved successfully.

OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.5.0 log created on 10222008_125708

The Spybot RES folder said that for Malware Nothing was Found and for Heuristic files Nothing was found.

I couldn't get the second step to work with either option: VirusTotal or Jotti's. I received error messages with both. It said that my internet wasn't connected or that the there was a problem with the webpage.

Here is the HijackThis log:

I followed the directions for HostsXpert and all went exactly as you described. However, I still cannot get Jotti or VirusTotal to work. I keep receiving the error message.

Hi Terri

do a reg search

Download RegSearch by Bobbi Flekman.
  • Create a folder in your C: drive C:\Regsearch, and extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.
  • Double click regsearch.exe to launch the programme.
  • Copy/Paste the following into the Search Box
    • ApKKAEdkdZah
  • Click OK.

Regsearch will now search your Registry for the required strings, when it is finished it will open a Notepad file RegSearch.txt, saved to the Regsearch folder.

Copy/Paste that file into your next post.

I haven't use the computer except to run these scans/programs, so it's hard to say how it's working. I have noticed that the irritating screen picture is gone and I now have control over my desktop again, so that is awesome! I guess I've been waiting for the OK to use the computer for anything "real" again. I have a computer at work that I've been using instead of this one. Once you say it's all clear, I'll start using it again.

Thanks,
Terri

Hi Terri

Congratulations, your log looks clean! :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Next we remove all used tools.

Please delete Rsit (from your desktop) and C:\Rsit folder

  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP or Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    • Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date
Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
      Secunia Software Inspector
      F-secure Health Check
    • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
    • Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

      Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide

      Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide
    • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
    • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
