winfixer/virtumondo

Unread postby porsche_944 » November 3rd, 2005, 2:02 am

I am running mozilla suite without any issues, but MS anti-spyware keeps finding virtumondo but can't seem to delete it. Also, before I blocked the winfixer website through norton IE was completely unuseable.

thanks for taking a look. I researched some of this while reading thru the university forums. I think I have some ideas of what I have, but thought I should do this the right way instead of trying to do it all myself. I think there is just the one problem to get rid of.

Hi again,

Thanks for being patient. :)

We'll need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we are going to make.

Disable Microsoft AntiSpyware:
1. Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
2. Click on Tools, Settings.
3. In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
4. Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
5. Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
6. After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
7. Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Download Ccleaner. Do not Use it Yet

Show hidden files:

Start> My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this
    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:
Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkli.dll

  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:
Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\ilkkj.dll .*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

      O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkli.dll
      O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkkli - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkli.dll
      O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Run Ccleaner

Click on Options, Select Advanced Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected. (Do not use the "Issues" block) Choose the Windows tab.
Check everything EXCEPT cookies, the Autocomplete Form History and the Advanced part of the Menu.
Choose Run Cleaner. This process could take a while.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi Porsche_944,

The vundo infection seems to be gone. :) However, we still have some more work to do. I see that you have MyWay installed on your computer. I would strongly recommend the removal of it as it is known to bring in adware even though it comes pre-installed on some Dell computers. For futher information you can click here.

Please go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and click on uninstall/remove.

Please download Ewido Security Suit. Update it and save it to your desktop. Do not Use it Yet

Unless you have already reversed the process, your hidden files should still be showing. Otherwise, make sure that they are showing.

Click OK.

Reboot into Safe Mode following my earlier instructions.

Close all windows except HijackThis. Place a check mark against the following entries: If you have decided not to uninstall MyWay, do not fix the entries in blue, but if you uninstalled it, fix them as well.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mysearch.myway.com/jsp/dellsidebar.jsp?p=DE
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll
02 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkli.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkkli - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkli.dll (file missing)

Click the "Fix Checked" button. Close HijackThis.

Still in Safe Mode, Navigate and delete the following files in bold, if found:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqq.dll
C:\i386\vtsqq.dll
C:\i386\jkkli.dll

Start | Search | All Files and Folders.
Expand Search Options, check Advanced Options, check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search Subfolders. Search for each and every one of the following files, one by one and delete any/all instances of the following files if found:

jkkli.*
ilkkj.*
vtsqq.*
qqstv.*

Navigate and delete the following folder in bold, if found: (If you've uninstalled MyWay)

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA

Still in Safe Mode run Ewido.

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Settings, and under "What to scan?", select "Every file" then click ok.
Then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.

If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Reboot in Normal Mode

Run Ccleaner and Panda Active Scan again

We still need to make sure that everything is cleaned up. Please post a new HijackThis log, Ewido report and the report from Panda.

Hi Porsche_944,

Congratulations! :D Your log is clean. You've done a great job. I am glad that you decided to uninstall MyWay. How is everything running now? If you have any problems, let me know. If not, and everything is running smoothly, you can tidy up to complete the job:

Remember to Hide your system files again.

Start>My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View>

Under the Hidden files and folders heading uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Remember to enable Microsoft Antispyware .

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware>Tools>Settings

In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options check Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection check Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you check these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Remember to create a new restore point
Please reset System Restore to remove eventual backups of the spyware and trojans.

Turn off System Restore
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Select the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.
Reboot your computer.

Turn System Restore back on
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Clear the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
A new restore point will be created automatically.

This is a good reading for internet security.

You can also add the following to your arsenal, which already has Spybot and Adaware:
SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system. It works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place
IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Ccleaner - You already have this too. This is just to explain what it's for. It cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
Weather Watcher - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light

Firewalls: These are two good firewalls, free for personal use.
Sygate
ZoneAlarm

Enjoy your surfing. :)
