Malwarebytes' froze during scan

Unread postby markb95312 » October 15th, 2008, 11:51 am

I have been having several problems with my PC recently and was running the Malwarebytes application which was recommended on one of your site's post. The application froze several times and was unable to complete the task. My computer is running very slow and unresponsive.

I am running a SONY VAIO Pentium D 2.80 GHz with 1 GB RAM. I run McAfee Security Center as my AV, and alternate between SpyHunter 3 and PCTools Spyware Doctor for Spyware protection. Alll are updated daily and run daily to keep my PC clean. Something has fallen through the cracks I am sure.

My OS is Windows XP (SP3) Media Center Edition and all critical updates have been up to date. I started having problems though after a MCS update (Rollback 2) and have been going steadily downhill since.

Here is my HijackThis v2.0.2 log:

Hello! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research so please be patient while I work on your log and I will post back here with any recommendations.

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Having numerous protection programs running simultaneously can often have an impact on the computers speed. Malwarebytes in my opinion would have better detection rates than SpyHunter 3 and PCTools Spyware Doctor so you may like to uninstall them to see if it helps. You should also take a look at this tutorial for slow computers to see if it helps:
http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials ... slowly.php

There are a couple of issues from your HijackThis log that will need attention but nothing too drastic.

Step 1:
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<< will be maximized) and info.txt (<< will be minimized)

Re: Malwarebytes' froze during scan

Unread postby Rodav » October 21st, 2008, 2:50 pm

I can't see too much bad bar a few leftovers from a vundo infection.

Step 1:
  1. Download ERUNT from here
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  2. Install ERUNT by double clicking it and then following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option at a later date)
  3. Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  4. Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  5. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked which are System registry and Current user registry
  6. Press OK
  7. Press YES to create the folder.

Step 2:
Download OTMoveIt3 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit3.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
:files
C:\VundoFix Backups

:reg
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,00,00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{9633D6EF-4F44-4FF8-8E83-4B9DC82B2246}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Alcmtr"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\opnlLBSi]

:commands
[emptytemp]
[reboot]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3

Step 3:
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Step 4:
Run random's system information tool (RSIT.exe) by double clicking it and post the following into your next reply:
  • The OTMoveit3 results
  • The NOD32 scan results
  • A new RSIT.exe log
Also let me know how your computer is running.

Re: Malwarebytes' froze during scan

Unread postby Rodav » October 22nd, 2008, 3:54 pm

How is your computer running now?

Please make sure word wrap is turned is unchecked in Notepad as this can make logs harder to read:

1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad
2. On the menu bar in Notepad select Format and click on WordWrap so it appears un-checked.

Step 1:
Older versions of java have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE) and install it to your computer.

Step 2:
Run random's system information tool (RSIT.exe) by double clicking it and post the following into your next reply:
  • The RSIT.exe log
  • Information on how your computer is running now.

yes, everything is working faster. It appears that my main culprit was the PC Tools Spy Doctor program as it sucked up every bit of memory available and scanned every file and application that was opened or running. I disabled the immunization aspect of the program and things are faster although not as fast as it should be running.

My next question to you would be this; I am having to use several spyware/malware applications to keep my computer clean and free from this invasion of my privacy since they all do not see things the same way. Therefore, should I disable immunizations and just run a scan periodically with different scan engines or pick one that does it all the best that it can? Performance is my main concern as I am a graphic and web designer and need to have a quick machine yet need to look at the web and new trends that are out there. My problem lies with others (wife) that uses the computer to get entertainment news and watches a lot of "free" videos. Nothing is free but should be free from trojans - cookies, maybe acceptable for sites do have to pay their bills but never trojans.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Hi Mark,

McAfee has a reputation of being quite bloated, there are other alternative AV's such as NOD32 which would be considered lighter on resources, I have linked to them further down. You do need to have your realtime protection on your AV turned on as much as possible. Malwarebytes has a great detection and removal rate so regular scans with it would be good enough for you instead of some of the other apps. I will give some tips and programs which will help stop you from getting reinfected later on in the post.

Step 1:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
You can also delete RSIT.exe and any logs created.

Step 2:
Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Your logs are now clean. :D :D
If you still feel you are having any issues please let me know now, otherwise read through and proceed with the following:

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints, you need to be registered to post as unfortunately we were hit with too many spam posting to allow guest posting to continue just find your country room and register your complaint.

Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection
You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented
  • Download and install an antivirus program, and make sure that you keep it updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software
Two good antivirus programs free for non-commercial home use are Avast and Antivir
Two good paid for antivirus programs are NOD32 and Kaspersky
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection level. It may also impair the performance of your PC.
  • Make sure you install all the security updates for Windows, Internet explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it to that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC, so keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC
Go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications
Note: The update process uses activex, so you will need to use internet explorer for it, and allow the activex control that it wants to install
  • Keep your non-Microsoft applications updated as well
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities, to check for other vulnerable programs running on your PC that are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month
  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    Click Start > Run
    Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Install a Hosts File
    I recommend MVPS Hosts File
Every version of windows includes a hosts file as part of them. A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
On some PCs, having a custom HOSTS file installed can cause a significant slowdown. Following these instructions should resolve the issue
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type services.msc & click OK
    • In the list, find the service called DNS Client & double click on it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click OK & then close the Services window
For a more detailed explanation of the HOSTS file, click here
  • Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program. If you want to help the developer of the program and get more information about what the programs that you see in Winpatrol please check out Winpatrol Plus. It does not need a new download.
  • Install Malwarebytes & update and scan with it regularly
Malwarebytes is a free for personal use on demand scanner which is developed by active members of the Malware Removal community. It detects and removes many modern infections. The paid version offers realtime protection.
  • The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware, even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.
