Problem with a DNS changer virus/malware

Unread postby Tcryo » October 20th, 2008, 5:05 pm

i have about 7-15 computers that seem to be infected with a Dns Changer malware. The virus is not detected by Symantec at all, and was only found by randomly seeing the DNS entries from an ipconfig -all.

The virus is detected by Malwarebytes but keeps coming back after each reboot. The virus seems to be similiar to the zlob.dns changer virus as that is what Malwarebytes comes up with when it detects it in the registry.

the place of the entries:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces -one of the subkeys only
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces - one of the subkeys only
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces - one of the subkeys only

the specific entry it infects is the DHCPnameserver tool. The ip addresses it enters are: 85.255.112.36 or 85.255.112.41

The latest fix we have tried is the following

step 1. Ran fixware from safemode and rebooted into normal windows to finish the scan tool. Checked registry and entries were still there
step 2. Ran fixware from Safemode and rebooted back into safemode to finish the scan tool. Checked registry and entries were still there
Step 3 Ran hijack this tool

Here is the log files there were generated in each step:

The entries in the 017 range of the hijack this logfile are showing is our domain name so everything looks correct, but those ip addresses are still listed in the registry so it doesn't look like the problem is resolved.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Problem with a DNS changer virus/malware

Unread postby NonSuch » October 25th, 2008, 6:15 am

This issue involves computers used for business purposes, and our services are specifically limited to support for home users, therefore, this topic falls outside the scope of this forum and must be closed.

We're very sorry, but we do not support business computers as there may be restrictions and modifications installed on such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware. There are also other risks associated with the removal of malware, including the possibility of data loss.

http://www.malwareremoval.com/rules.php

I can tell you that your machines appear to be infected by wareout, as evidenced by the IP address in the Ukraine, and as you have run Fixwareout, you are likely already aware of that.

the specific entry it infects is the DHCPnameserver tool. The ip addresses it enters are: 85.255.112.36 or 85.255.112.41

This infection is basically a rootkit, which is why its files are not visible and why it is so difficult to remove, as all the files must be removed at the same time in order to destroy the infection. As these are business computers, I would advise you that your safest and most secure option is to reformat these systems and, after they are restored, make sure that all operating system patches, including Service Packs, are installed.
