Need help- Connections to malicious addresses

Unread postby roger87 » October 9th, 2008, 11:45 pm

Hi I've noticed that my PC has slowed drastically and CPU is over 90% for small bursts. When I run netstat at the command prompt I notice there are several active connections to a foreign address of .supercocklol.com followed by a 4 digit number. For example: .supercocklol.com:5432 or .supercocklol.com:1038

My hijack log is below. Can someone please help? Thanks so much!

Unread postby Carolyn » October 14th, 2008, 4:28 pm

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Carolyn and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

The version of HijackThis that you are using is outdated. Please delete it from your computer.

Important: Before posting your logs, please do the following:

1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad
2. On the menu bar in Notepad select Format and click on WordWrap so it appears un-checked.

Download and install HijackThis

  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required
    .

Uninstall List

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply.

Please post the following in your next reply.
  • log from hijackthis
  • uninstall list

Re: Need help- Connections to malicious addresses

Unread postby Carolyn » October 15th, 2008, 6:33 am

Hello,

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Please be sure that wordwrap is not checked in Notepad before you copy the logs for posting. On the menu bar in Notepad select Format. WordWrap should appear un-checked.

Re: Need help- Connections to malicious addresses

Unread postby Carolyn » October 20th, 2008, 6:23 am

Hi,

  • Please download F-Secure Blacklight (fsbl.exe) from here
  • Save into C:\ with a name of fsbl.exe
  • Go to Start > Run
  • Copy and paste the contents of the below codebox into the run box
    Code: Select all
    C:\fsbl.exe /expert

  • Click OK
  • This will launch BlackLight
  • Select I accept the agreement
  • Click Next
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Click on Next>
  • Click Exit
  • A logfile will have been created in the C:\ drive
  • It will be named fsbl-xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log where xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is the date and time of the scan
  • Use notepad to open that log
  • Post the contents of that log as a reply to this topic, along with a new HijackThis log

When I run netstat at the command prompt I notice there are several active connections to a foreign address

Are you still seeing the activity that you described in your initial post?

Hello, I posted the 2 logs below. Yes, I still have the original problem. Also, I noticed in my last posting that in one of the logs you asked for, the first entry in my hosts file was 127.0.0.1 .supercocklol.com. I don't know anything about host files, but I'm guessing that should not be there. Thanks again for your continued help on this!

Re: Need help- Connections to malicious addresses

Unread postby Carolyn » October 20th, 2008, 11:02 am

I noticed in my last posting that in one of the logs you asked for, the first entry in my hosts file was 127.0.0.1 .supercocklol.com

Yes, I had noticed that as well. It is curious in that normally an entry like that would block access to the site.

-----------------------------

Copy the text in the code box below and paste it in Notepad, then save it as look.bat (save it as type all files, *.*)

Code: Select all
netstat >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

It should look like this -> Image

Doubleclick look.bat; black dos windows will open, that's normal. The black window will close when the process is complete.

A file called look.txt should appear on your Desktop. Double click look.txt and it will open in Notepad. Please post the contents of this file.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Hello,

Upload file for scanning
I'd like you to check a file for malware.
C:\Program Files\Chorus Toolbar\ChorusToolbar.dll

  • Copy/Paste the file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Save the complete results in a Notepad/Word document on your desktop.

Run a custom CFScript
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it (click select all, then use Ctrl-C on your keyboard to copy the text):

Code: Select all
KILLALL::

File::
C:\WINDOWS\samjb.dat
C:\WINDOWS\ueoko.dat
C:\WINDOWS\weddt.dat
C:\WINDOWS\xyipj.dat
C:\WINDOWS\zinpq.dat
C:\WINDOWS\zyuft.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\aoogm.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lurru.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nnixu.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nrsyu.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ohanx.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\oyitn.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pireo.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pshls.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pzohs.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\tfhlc.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vkohb.dat

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Download and run GMER
Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  1. Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All....
  2. Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  3. Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  4. Click Next. It will start extracting.
  5. Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  6. Double click on gmer.exe to run it.
  7. Select the Rootkit tab.
  8. On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  9. Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  10. Click on the Scan button.
  11. When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  12. Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  13. Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  14. Save the Gmer scan log and post it in your next reply.
  15. Close Gmer.
  16. Open Command Prompt by going to Start > Run and type in cmd. Press Enter.
  17. In Command Prompt, type in net stop gmer. Press Enter.
  18. Type in exit to close Command Prompt.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Please post the following in your next reply:
  1. The VirusTotal/Jotti result
  2. The ComboFix log
  3. The Gmer log
  4. A fresh HijackThis log

Sorry, That file is definitely safe and NOT malware. My company has created a new IE toolbar application that uses that file. There is definitely nothing wrong with it and it is virus/malware free. I've been searching each log file and removing the entry for ChorusToolbar.dll before I post to you to avoid any confusion. I must've missed that in my last post. Would you still like me to take the remaining steps starting with CFScript? Thanks.
