IE opens itself as well as an additional ad window

Unread postby mistadobolina » October 7th, 2008, 11:56 pm

Hello, I've always tried to keep a fairly clean computer but recently I've been having a pop-up issue.
Internet Explorer will open itself along with an additional window titled "advertisement". This will happen even when I am not browsing websites.
When looking at the properties of the "advertisement" window it points to www dot impactsoftware dot com.

Below is the hijack this log.

Thank you so much for your attention - this forum is amazing, I'm amazed at the selfless people who are so helpful.

The popup seems to be related to iSync 2.1! which syncs music to your ipod. The TRIAL version displays advertisements. The ads disappear when the user purchases the software.

If you want to remove it you can do the following:

Step 1:
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    iSync 2.1! (or similar)

Step 2:
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NoticeP.exe] C:\Program Files\Impact Software LLC\Notice\NoticeP.exe

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application and Restart your computer.

Step 3:
Use Windows Explorer to navigate to and delete the following folder (if it's present):

Folders:
C:\Program Files\Impact Software LLC

Now just exit Explorer and empty your Recycle Bin.

Step 4:
Run HijackThis again, do a system scan again and post the log into your next reply. Also let me know if you are still having any issues.

I presume you are using MediaMonkey to sync with your ipod, I doubt that is the culprit. You have some old versions of java which apart from using up a lot of space they also have security vulnerabilities.

Step 1:
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 15
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 15
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Step 4:
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Step 5:
Run HijackThis again, do a system scan again and post the log into your next reply along with the NOD32 results. Also let me know if you are still having any issues.

Re: IE opens itself as well as an additional ad window

Unread postby mistadobolina » October 13th, 2008, 4:42 pm

I'm sorry for the delay.

I just followed your instructions and it seems you have fixed the problem!

Unfortunately I'm still contemplated reformatting this PC anyway

I'm having issues with the RIMs Desktop Manager, that are leading me to believe I am having registry issues. (I'm not even 100% sure what that means.)

below is the Hijack this and virus scan logs

Thank you for your help!

Re: IE opens itself as well as an additional ad window

Unread postby Rodav » October 13th, 2008, 7:07 pm

What seems to be the issue you are having with it, has it been happening for a while or just recently?

A reformat might be unnecessary, what makes you think it is a registry issue?

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Fix Line with HijackThis
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application and Restart your computer.

Yesterday I attempted to re-install Blackberry Desktop Manager to the machine because it was having an odd issue where the software was unable to reach the Internet, despite the fact that its built in "check for updates" link takes me to a fully functional IE page

During the re-install there were many instances where the Install Wizard was unable to write to the registry (If you'd like the exact error messages I will attempt to run it again, but frankly I don't think I could handle that tonight :pale: ).

At the time I "googled" (I hate using that as a verb) the issue and found nothing but dead ends and folks who after much searching, gave up and re-formatted their pc.

 Rolling back to the original issue, I have followed your newest steps and below is the HijackThis log.

Again - thanks for this, you've been amazingly helpful!

Re: IE opens itself as well as an additional ad window

Unread postby Rodav » October 14th, 2008, 2:38 pm

Have you tried the Blackberry support forums:
http://supportforums.blackberry.com/rim/

You could also try using System Restore;

1.Click Start.
2.Point to All Programs.
3.Point to Accessories.
4.Point to System Tools.
5.Click System Restore.

Then if you have a restore point created from before the issues with the desktop manager started happening, select it and see if that solves the problem. If you try this run HijackThis again and post another scan as some of the registry entries we removed may appear again.

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
