Hello MalWareThis92, I don't see anything bad in your log.

Just fix the the following line with HijackThis:

O16 - DPF: {03F998B2-0E00-11D3-A498-00104B6EB52E} (MetaStreamCtl Class) - https://components.viewpoint.com/MTSIns ... s/vmp.html

Did you perform any scans that gave some malware results ?

Fixed that HJT line. HJT stopped responding for a while.

Running scans with my anti-spyware apps now (updating first of course).

I must say that Spyware Doctor has detected a couple of FPs when I scanned my system before. One was a Spy Sweeper Hosts File entry and the other two were Gamespy and Fileplanet cookies.

EDIT: Whoops! Forgot the new HJT log. Here it is.

What items did Spy Sweeper / Spyware Doctor pick up ? Anything serious ?

Since you are running both, make sure that you don't have conflicts between them. InCD can be a source of trouble too, did you try without it running.

I'm aware of the connection limit in SP2, are you sure that the patch you installed isn't causing trouble ?

Let's see if those 2 dig up something. Run WinPfind from Safe Mode if it locks up in Normal Mode.

Download WinPFind.zip to your Desktop from
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php
Extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") to download Silent Runners to your Desktop.
______________________________

Open the C:\WinPFind folder and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
Click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish.

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log file at C:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt. Pleased copy that log to your next reply.
______________________________

Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the Silent Runners icon on your desktop.
You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", it will produce a log named “StartupProgramsâ€

The problems started a long time after InCD and the XP SP2 TCP/IP Patch were installed.

Spy Sweeper didn't pick up anything serious (just a few cookies) but Spyware Doctor picked up a Spy Sweeper Hosts File entry and flagged it as a "Possible website hijack" and a few cookies (two of which were FPs).

I've downloaded the latest Spyware Doctor definitions and now I'm doing a Spyware Doctor scan now. I'll let you know if it turns up anything dangerous.

Anyway, here's my Silent Runners log.

Was I supposed to run WinPFind and Silent Runners in Safe Mode? Windows just gave me a Virtual Memory warning (First time that has happened).

I can see a pair of WinPFind buttons on the taskbar when I didn't open WinPFind twice. Is this normal?

I'll post a WinPFind log as soon as I can. Unfortunately, I'm on dialup and my father wants to use the phone.

Winpfind uses a lot of ressources, that's why I did advice to run it from Safe Mode. I've seen it happen a few times that XP warns about low Virtual Memory when running it.

I would like to find out more about an entry:

Please download the Registry Search Tool from here:
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/

Unzip it to a convienent location such as your Desktop. Make sure that your Antivirus / OS allows the use of the .vbs scripts. If prompted, make sure to allow the script.

Double click regsearch.vbs
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

SsiEfr

then hit Ok

Here's the WinPFind log as promised.

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

WinPFind v1.4.1 - Log file written to "WinPFind.Txt" in the WinPFind folder.
Scan completed on 1/11/2005 5:03:05 PM

Script says that no instances of SsiEfr were found.

Here's the results from cmd:

Volume in drive C is WinXP
Volume Serial Number is E065-2BC4

It seems that the problems have been fixed now. It was a different TCP/IP patcher (a command line patcher).

The FP that Spyware Doctor gave with the Spy Sweeper hosts file entry was fixed with the latest definitions.

Good to hear that it seems solved now. :)

Just one file to check : C:\WINDOWS\system32\11262BD4FD.dll
Upload it to Jotti's scanner at:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Post the results here in the next reply.
99% for sure that you may delete the file.

Thanks for checking. :)

I would like to check something, a theory ... but it has to be done from Safe Mode, otherwise it wont work.

Please download the Registry Search Tool from here:
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/

Unzip it to a convienant location such as your Desktop.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Make sure that your Antivirus / OS allows the use of the .vbs scripts. If prompted, make sure to allow the script.

Double click regsearch.vbs
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

adchannel

then hit Ok

It may take a while to run. It will tell you when it's done and offer you to look at the file.
Say Yes and when it opens safe the file to a convenient location. Boot into Normal Mode, open the saved file and copy/paste the content in your reply.

Here's the Registry Search Results:
REGEDIT4
; RegSrch.vbs © Bill James

; Registry search results for string "adchannel" 9/11/2005 9:24:45 AM

; NOTE: This file will be deleted when you close WordPad.
; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.
; (If you save the file with a .reg extension, you can use it to restore any Registry changes you make to these values.)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Webroot\SpySweeper\Host File]
"adchannel.adintelligence.net"="127.0.0.1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Webroot\SpySweeper\Host File]
"adchannel.contextplus.net"="127.0.0.1"

Here's my new HJT log just to check that everything is OK.

For the moment everything is OK. The problem with IE crashing did come back but I did a Windows Repair. If it comes back again then I was told I would have to do a format.

If you did a Windows Repair using the XP disc or the hidden partition (depends on your config) you have to keep in mind that you must reinstall all windows updates again.
