Backdoor IRCBot.dke and some others

Unread postby Shorty_sx » September 26th, 2008, 2:11 pm

Hey!

I seem to have contacted some random Trojan which I believe spread through all our (mine and my too roommate's) flashdrives, external harddisks, ipods and so on.

Kaspersky managed to catch the following when one of the flash drives was connected to my friends computer: Backdoor.Win32.IRCBot.dke

AVG got something similar on my other friend's computer (with a different flash drive). The director seems to be (drive letter):run\autorun.exe for all of them. Even my ipod classic appeared to have it when i connected it to yet another laptop.

I noticed that it created some phony iexplorer.exe's and used hijackthis to remove them.
The lines I removed using HJT:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft©] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\iexplore.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft©] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\iexplore.exe

Please advise me on how to remove these thing from the rest of the external hard disks, flash drives, ipods and so on, since they appear to be transfering themselves back and forth.

I will run a few more scans such as Malwarebyte's, Kaspersky online and post those logs later. myself and my roommates teach a few classes and need our drives pretty much every day.

Thanks for anything you can help me with!

My hijackthis log can be found below,

Please click this link-->Jotti

Copy/paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box and click Submit/Send (depends on which one you are using Jotti or VirusTotal).

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\iexplore.exe

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Thank you for the reply,

Since I knew what a backdoor was I havn't used my online banking and pretty much stood away from using my passwords and so on. There are a few things I would like to ask before making my final decision.

The first problem came from a flash drive, and was on a bunch of our external hard drives. My question is, can a trojan actually 'infect' an external hard disk to the point where it needs to be formated, or are they mostly used as a way to copy the trojan to other pcs. If I were to reinstall my OS, I would have to back up my data on my external hard drive which may or may not be infected.

Since the backdoor was encountered, I have rarely been connected to the internet. In addition I use a NAT router and firewall. I strongly believe the backdoor was not used so far.

At this point it doesnt seem that I would be willing to reinstall my OS, so it would be great if you could help me get rid of this (as well as possible of course).

Thank you for all the help agian, really appreciate it!

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

SDFix run, log below.

I hope its ok if I ask, but one of the of the previous tests found this file:

C:\WINDOWS\ie7updates\KB953838-IE7\iexplore.exe.000 Infected: Backdoor.Win32.IRCBot.dke

Since the file was created on the 27th of Sept (when this whole thing started), and the file doesn't seem to be a real windows file or have any use, could I remove it straight off, or is there a better way of doing so than simply deleting the file?

Thanks again for the help!

Re: Backdoor IRCBot.dke and some others

Unread postby Shaba » October 4th, 2008, 1:32 pm

Before that, we have some other things to do :)

Do you recognize this folder?

C:\Program Files\mm.BOT\

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and answer to my question, please :)

Yes, the mm.Bot folder is a 3rd party application for DiabloII which I used some time ago. Quite a few people have used it, should not contain any actually dangerous files.

Apart from that here's the new HJT log:
