Register to Remove

Unread postby wng_z3r0 » November 10th, 2005, 8:47 am

Are you suspecting any malware problems?
you HJT log looks good to me.

You can fix these lines, but it is just to clean the registry up a little bit:

Doubleclick on HijackThis.
Then click on the button that says run a system scan
Then place a check next to the following items and click "fix"
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Also you have Myway speedbar installed. If this is a dell computer, don't follow the steps below, because dell has disabled add/remove programs :(

I am going to provide an optional removal for Myway speedbar . It is considered optional for this reason:
[quote]MyWay is a search toolbar that installs into Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, adding search functions and popup blocking. It reports your surfing activity anonymously to MyWay affiliates, helping them to serve targeted advertising to you. As a BHO, MyWay shares the memory that your browser uses, detects events, creates additional windows while you are surfing, and monitors your activity. When a new browser window is opened, MyWay will send a configuration request about 5k in size.
The MySearch and MyWay variants have been bundled with Grokster, Morpheus, WeatherBug, and software from mgshareware.com. MySearch has also been installed by the FavoriteMan parasite.
The MyWeb variant is bundled with software (Popswatter, SmileyCentral, My Mail Stamp) from “Fun Web Productsâ€

your log looks good.

as for this:
Details: Rule "Default Block Bla Trojan horse" blocked (ATHENA(4.233.123.225),1042).
Inbound UDP packet.
Local address,service is (localhost,1042).
Remote address,service is (ATHENA(4.233.123.225),1042).
Process name is "N/A".

A trojan horse attempted to come INTO your system
and Norton blocked it. I don't believe it made it into your system

Now if norton complained that the trojan was trying to get OUT of yoru computer, that would mean you were infected.

BUT: just to make sure

Download http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.
Please print these instructions as you will be going into safe mode.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by following the following steps:

Reboot.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

New Log

Unread postby grifter » November 15th, 2005, 10:49 pm

Here is the log from WinPFind:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Thanks! It was there and I deleted it. I've been getting those "Search Inquery" pop-ups. If you can think of a way to get rid of those, please let me know. Thanks for all your help Wng. I appreciate it.

search inquiry popups? can you take a screenshot for me?

Also, try this:
please download Rootkit Revealer to your desktop. Unzip the file. Turn off your real time antivirus for a moment. Then go to file->scan
This will take some time. When it's done, go to file->save
save the logfile to the desktop, and then past the contents here.
*Don't forget to turn your AV back on afterwards*

Seems to be cured...

Wng,

Thanks for your continued help! I will take screenshots if the pop-ups emerge, but to tell you the truth, I haven't had ANY problems since you asked me to delete the "pqgwf" file (which was probably meaningless). I downoaded it the RootkitReveal program and its contents are displayed below:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\webcal\URL Protocol 7/10/2005 4:35 AM 13 bytes Data mismatch between Windows API and raw hive data.
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\d347prt\Cfg\0Jf40 11/21/2005 10:35 PM 0 bytes Hidden from Windows API.

I'll send you the screenshots if the pop-ups return.

Thanks again,

the RKR log looks fine.

Tell me if any popups return. Until then, try these steps:

We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. Put a check by "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  5. Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  6. Check "Hide protected operating system files."
  7. Click Apply, and then click OK.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Change the allow paste operations via script to Disable
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial
The program is available for download here
  • Download Spybot
Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
Spybot can be downloaded at this location
  • Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes "kill bits" in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster here here
  • Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the "bad" webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here
    Download it here
  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    2. Click run
    3. In the dialog box, type services.msc
    4. hit enter, then locate dns client
    5. Highlight it, then double-click it.
    6. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    7. Click ok

  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - List of free Anti virus programs
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. See here to choose one
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    See here to choose one

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
wng 8)
