Unread postby gobear » September 29th, 2008, 4:12 am

Please refer to my screenshot, for some reason, I have this thing coming off from my desktop wallpaper and occasssionally it said that it has detected a virus which I would "delete" everytime it appears

MY SCREENSHOT VIRUS:

http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/842/77768616dd3.png

So my question is....how do you get rid of this Walmare thing? Because it's always there whenever I open it or restart the computer, it just won't get off.

I even tried to download the Spybot, Adware programes. I mean after I got them, it worked great becasue I deleted them and when I restarted it, the wallpaper seemed ot be gone but once i recieve the "threat" thing again, the wallpaper (shown in the screenshot) comes back again =(

Your help and answer will be very very much appreciated as I am really a bit fustrated with this issue

Hi gobear, Welcome to the forums!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Step #1: Download and Run HijackThis

Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Step #2: Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

As we work together to resolve your problem, please read these instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them to Notepad.

Lastly, please keep these points in mind:
  • If you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Please post your replies only to this topic, and please DO NOT start a new thread.
  • Since there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

Thanks,
Ken

And I have not done STEP 2 yet or should I be doing this step until Step 1 has been done as I am a bit confused here? Sorry I am not a technical savvy here so I might sometimes need a little bit more instructions, lol.

Once again thanks very much for your time as I didn't expect I would get a long reply and I look forward to hearing it soon as I can also learn something =)

Cheers

Oh and 1 other thing

Everytime I open or restart the computer, it has 2 things appeared the virus message pretty much everytime

Please refer to the screenshot below

It appears this first

http://i37.tinypic.com/25pr3fm.jpg

Then I "moved to chest" as recommended by Avast (I also tried Delete before, but its pretty much the same anyways)

Then afterwards appeared this again

http://i34.tinypic.com/1f78cl.jpg

And I also moved to chest too as recommended

Hope that will be helpful if as of additional info

Thanks and cheers

Hi gobear,

Yes, please follow step #2 in my first post to generate the Uninstall list. I will need to see that. Also, you have signs of a P2P program on your computer:

Use of P2P (Person to Person) file sharing programs

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.

Because of this, we felt we needed to change our policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.
  • If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. We will withdraw our help should you not agree to their removal.
  • If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programmes, we will refuse our help.

We do not ask you to do this without reason.

P2P programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured programme.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates perfectly the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

We see no purpose in cleaning your machine if you use P2P programs, as it is pretty much certain that if you continue to use them then you will get infected again.

You have the following P-2-P program(s) installed
uTorrent

This is how you uninstall it/them:

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    uTorrent

NOTE: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Once you have uninstalled uTorrent, please post a new HijackThis log, and the Uninstall list.

Thanks,
Ken
