Hello Justin W,

I will be assisting you with your malware issues.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any question or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.
----------------------------------------------
C:\unzipped\hijackthis[1]\HijackThis.exe

You are running HijackThis from a zip file.
When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Right click on hijackthis.zip and select Extract all....
  • Click Next when you see the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  • Click Next again.
  • Check (tick) Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  • Double click on HijackThis.exe to run it.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.
  • DO NOT fix anything as most entries can be harmless or needed for the health of Windows.
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:

Hello JustinW,

You aren't running Anti Virus Software

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network.
Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently.  Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software (for personal use), from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.

Update your newly installed Anti-Virus, and let it scan your pc and quarantee or remove what it finds.

Do you use a proxie to connect with Internet?
Did you set these proxies?

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,AutoConfigURL = http://qcproxy.qc.cuny.edu/qcproxy.pac
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = forbin.qc.edu:3128
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1;*.local

Also did you set this as your search page?
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ytmnd.com/

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file

I set R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,AutoConfigURL = http://qcproxy.qc.cuny.edu/qcproxy.pac
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = forbin.qc.edu:3128. I don't remember R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1;*.local, but it was a long time ago.

Also, I did set ytmnd.com as my homepage.

Hello Justin W,

REMOVE VIEWPOINT

You have Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. These programs are not malware but are considered as foistware instead of malware since they are installed without user's approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove them.

To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.
----------------------------------------------
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log.

When I run SDfix in safe mode, the desktop icons and taskbar disappear and the program doesn't seem to be doing anything. Is this normal?

From my post:
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

Normally the program should be working to remove the infections.
Wait for a while, untill it says to reboot.

Let me know if it gets stuck.

Hello JustinW,

It looks that you run SDFix twice, and this is the 2nd time report.

Can you look if you can find a 1st report in SDFix folder:
C:\SDFix\Report.txt

Run by Justin W on Tue 09/30/2008 at 02:39 AM

The 2nd report i am looking for will have an earlier time in the heading.

There's only one report.txt there, the one that I posted. The first time I ran the program, I didn't let it finish because I thought that something went wrong.

Ok it looks that even if the 1st time it didn't create a report, it removed the infection i expected.

I am at work now, so i can't check your reports, i'll be back asap.

Hello JustinW,

REMOVE P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

BitLord
Soulseek

Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

As per our policy go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red) NOW.
----------------------------------------------
Do you remember if your firewall asked you to accept this file lately and you denied?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\svchost.exe
----------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.
In addition, go to Start, Search.  When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom.
Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
----------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following folders/files: if found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

Folders:
C:\Program Files\BitLord
C:\Program Files\Soulseek

Files:
C:\WINDOWS\uccspecc.sys
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
As i am not sure that the infected file is gone, let's run another tool.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix at your DESKTOP:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Additional links to download the tool:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log.
