Slow Notebook

My mom's laptop is about one year old and it has become pretty slow since the day t was bought. I accidentally broke the lcd screen once and we had to take it to a repair shop. My mom gave them the password to the laptop and I suspect that they may have installed software. The following is the HJT file.

If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.


Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

When I turn on the notebook, it takes a while for it to load. (I see a black screen for about 2 minutes before the log-in screen shows up) After I type in the password, it takes another whole minute for the desktop to show up. My applications, such as firefox, takes a while to start too.

Hi

There could be many reasons for your problems, and nothing in the HJT log suggests it's caused by malware. But we can take another look then take it from there.

Lets run an F-Secure online scan it will scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:

• Click HERE
• Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start Scanning button. A window will pop up.
• Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
• Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
• If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
• When cleaning has finished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan

• When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
• Click Automatic cleaning
• When cleaning has finished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)

Ive had a similar problem once, due to a dodgy service that was running. Luckily, it belonged to a program that is part of the antimalware community and was quickly resolved. that is just an example for you.

A couple of other points.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint media Player, click Remove.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

• Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
• From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
• JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
• Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
• A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 following the instructions below:

• Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and click on Download button.
• In Platform box choose Windows.
• Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
• Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
• Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
• Reboot your computer

I'm not sure. In the Add/Remove Programs tab, only one of them appears on the list. I had the trial version before I purchased it. Then I bought the keys and I might have downloaded it again.

Well, best we leave alone there. There isnt duplicates running in HJT so it wont be the case where there are two programs running at once.

Im not seeing any malware but lets take another look.

Lets run an F-Secure online scan it will scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:

• Click HERE
• Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start Scanning button. A window will pop up.
• Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
• Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
• If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
• When cleaning has finished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan

• When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
