I was wondering if anyone could help me with this log. This is from a work computer. It had quite a lot of infections but they have installed Symantec which has hopefully dealt with most of them. However a problem remains whereby if you go to Google with Internet Explorer it crashes after you type a few characters. I would like to fix that if possible.

Does your company have an IT department? If yes they should try to clean this pc.

Please see our policy for business computers here

In General, we do not help in cleaning business or corporate computers. There may be restrictions and modifications installed on such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware. There may also be legal issues regarding any loss of business data that we do not wish to deal with.

This pc is terribly infected.
If after reading the above you accept our terms and wish to continue and clean this pc, follow my instructions below:

RENAME HIJACKTHIS

There is some infection hiding in your log.

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to: C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to scanner.exe and post back a new Hijackthis log.

Please post again HijackThis log. The bottom end was cut.
It should be finished at 023 lines, and not 021 lines.

I get the following error message when I scan:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modMain_StartScan()
Error #9 - Subscript out of range

Please email me at link removed reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 7.0.5730.13
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

The log finishes at O21 rather than O23, as before.

Hello Rupert,

Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
We will donwload the newer version.

Special Notes:

Please remember to rename HijackThis.exe as per instructions in my previous post before running the newer version.

As you have too many Hosts files, it will take some time so, don't hurry to end the tool. Let it finish and when it's done the report will open in Notepad.
Then you save it, and post it back here.

Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Let me know if you have the same problems with this one too.

Does your company have an IT department? If yes they should try to clean this pc.

I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have several Very Dangerous infections on this machine.

Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor, and keyloggers. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Even if we attempt to clean this machine i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards, and all the infections will be removed.

As per our forum's policy which i posted before, i can't continue to help you clean this pc, due to the severe and dangerous infections present.

This pc should be given to your IT department to remove everything, and format and re-install windows.

This is a company machine.

As we can only proceed with cleaning it with the owner's permission, and as there is no way we can verify that ownership, it's not possible for us to proceed.

Due to the nature of the infection on this machine, and since it is being used for business purposes, the only safe recommendation we can make is that you re-format the hard drive and re-install the operating system.

This should be performed by your IT department, or whichever professional support you employ.
