worm.win32.netbooster - I think it is fake but cannot use pc

Unread postby daveg225 » September 15th, 2008, 4:36 pm

It is so bad I cannot use the pc for long before the whole thing locks up.
The typical Task Manager ctrl-alt-del is "turned of by administrator".
If I come up in safe mode, I sometimes can logon as administrator.
I can run regedit, but GPEDIT.msc has been deleted !

Here is the HJT log:

Thanks for any pointers to removal tools you can give me !

Howdy daveg225 and welcome to the forums,

My name is flashh4 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)
4. Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
5. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

If you can do those things, everything should go smoothly

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

I will be back as soon as possible with a fix !!
In the mean time can you give me an Uninstall list please !!

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Thanks
Chuck

Thanks Chuck !

I have been doing things on my own - so this may be making it more difficult for you.
I already ran a SmitfraudFix. And followed that up with a few passes of SUPERAntiSpyware.
Things appear to get better - but still not right.
I also removed the SPAM ALERT! by the clock using the intl.cpl command.
Also did an edit of the registry to remove the SPAM ALERT! next to the My Computer,Properties. I found VArestorepolicies.inf that gave me back Ctrl-Alt-Del and Taskbar. This also cleaned up my start button, all programs area.

I ran another HJT log and posted it below. This is from my "work" login. I have another as well not including the Administrator login. I assume these logs can look different depending on which user you login with? Or if your in safe mode or not.
But when I try to create an Uninstall list, as soon as I click on Save List, HJT closes and no notepad popoup happens?

Howdy daveg225, Please do not continue to try and fix your computer yourself it may just make it harder for me !!
Ok don't worry about the Uninstall list for now ! Go to Start> Run type msconfig and click OK.

Under the Services tab click Enable All

Under the Startup tab click Enable All> Apply> OK> Reboot now.

Then post a new HJT log !!

Thanks

Sorry to waste your time on this.
The person I was helping did not want to spend any more time on the fix.
Since windows file system was already damaged from him powering off
the laptop so many times due to virus slowdown and lock-ups, he decided to
bite the bullet and borrow recovery cd's from another laptop owner and go that route.

I am curious if the current HJT log indicated any virus issues.
If not possible - I understand and you can close out this thread.

Thanks again.
