Hi toofy27

After selecting Save Report As button
You can choose to save the report as Web page (.htm,.html) or text file (.txt)

peku006. the report is saved in My Docs in html format. Is there a simple way to change it to txt? (Otherwise I will have to redo the scan)
I also need advice about the HJT system scan, please. When I attempt this, the previous scan list immediately shows. How do I do a new HJT scan? Do I uninstall HJT and re-install?

peku006. I have begun to follow your latest instructions but again have difficulties with item 2 JavaRa. I could not get JavaRA to appear in Desktop but did manage to start the prog. I tried to save the logfile but am not sue I will know where to find it later!. I closed IE as instructed earlier and so I now have to decide whether I need to go back online to install JRE6 update7...
I am sorry, this is no reflection on you but I am thinking I do not understand computers enough to be able to complete this clean up. I will have to seek help at this end. Every step I take when trying to follow the instructions which I printout, is a worry that I am doing it wrong. Sorry to have wasted so much of your time. Thanks. toofy27

peku006. I have worked my way down to the Panda Online scan which has ended. At item 4 I was not asked for my country. At 7, I was not aware of any virus definitions being downloaded. At 8, I was not asked to select 'My Computer'. Now that the scan has completed I cannot see 'View Report'. The screen is headed Results; there is a 'BUY NOW' option to the right. below there are 3 sections. The first related to 'threats with free disinfection', then 'threats with paid disi...' lastly 'Suspicious ...' At the bottom is an option to click 'Send to Laboratory'. Can you tell me where I have gone wrong/what to do please?

Hi toofy27
Things Happen, don't worry about it.

Please do the following...

Dr.Web Cureit

Download Dr.Web CureIt & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.
Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe entry on your desktop, to start the program.
Reply "Run"" to the "Do you want to run this file" (launch.exe) prompt.
  • Press Update" at the Start-Update window...to perform an update, if available.
    When the update is done...
Reply "Run" to the "Do you want to run this file" (Free Dr. Web anti-virus scanner) prompt.
  • Press Start" when the Start-Update window re-appears...to begin the scan process.
  • Press "OK" at the "Start scan now?" prompt... An automatic "Express scan" will take place.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click "Settings" > "Change settings F9"
  • Choose the "Scanning" tab and uncheck "Heuristic analysis"
  • Choose the ""Log file" tab
    • under "Log mode" check the "Overwrite" radio button.
    • under "Limit log file size" uncheck "Maximum log file size"
    • Click "Apply" and then "OK" to apply the settings.
  • Select the "Complete scan" radio button.
  • Then click the green arrow triangle button... (on the right) and the scan will start.
This "complete" scan can take a while, so please be patient until it finishes.
  • While scanning, if any infections are found..you will be prompted for action. Click "Yes to all" to cure the files.
  • When the scan has finished, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, Click "File">Save report list".
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to a convenient location.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

After reboot, post the contents of Dr.Web log in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report).

Please let me know how your pc is now.

peku006. Am going to attempt to send you the Dr Web log now. Other than working through your instructions and watching over the scans I have not used the pc much to say how it is now. When I rebooted the desktops icons appeared at normal speed. The DEP warning has not appeared for days. The start up procedure was perhaps slow but this may be due to the excess of anti-virus progs? Will give my eyes a rest and do some surfing in the morning to see how it is. Thanks.

Hi toofy27

please delete VBRun60.exe

1 - remove tools
Let's clear out the programmes we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

Please download OTMoveIt and save it to desktop.
    • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch the programme.
    • Click on the CleanUp! button.
    • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programmes alerts you, allow it access.
    • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
    • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt
    • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

2 - clear system restore points
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
    • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
    • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
    • Select the More options tab
    • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

4 - Status Check
Please reply with

a fresh HijackThis log
Do you have problems?

Before i forget-a trivial point-your replies do not appear in my e-mails anymore.
I hope the above log helps. when i selected 'create a restore point' I was faced with entering a 'restore Point description' in a box. Not knowing what to type I left it blank and clicked on cancel(after cleaning up the system)
After doing all this, the icons for drweb, launch, ATF etc are still showing on the screen; should they have removed themselves if the OTmoveit had worked 100%?

I have done some surfing this morning and it seems OK. toofy27

Hi toofy27
I have done some surfing this morning and it seems OK

Alright, that's good

OTmoveit don´t remove drweb and ATF, you can just delete both those

  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools System Restore.
  • Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  • In the text box labeled Restore Point Description, type a name for this restore point such as “toofy27 -clean

After that.............

Congratulations, your log looks clean! :)

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.1
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Note:"Be sure to disable the service "DNS Client" FIRST to allow the use of large HOSTS files without slowdowns.
If this isn't done first, the next reboot may take a VERY LONG TIME.
This is how to do it. First be sure you are signed in as a user with administrative privileges:
Stop and Disable the DNS Client Service
Go to Start, Run and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service.
DNS Client
Right-Click on the DNS Client Service. Choose Properties
Select the General tab. Click on the Stop button.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Manual
Click the Apply tab, then click OK

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com
Note: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing!
