Hello,
I've seen this symptom on a couple of other posts and it seems like it can be pretty serious. I've disconnected the affected machine from the internet and am working through another computer.

Uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis. To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

• Start HijackThis
• Click on the Config button
• Click on the Misc Tools button
• Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
• Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

If you already have SDFix, delete it & download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.

• Double click on SDFix.exe. By default, it will install to C:\
• Click on Install
• Don't run it yet

Print out or save this set of instructions as you will not have internet access during the fix.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode
Let me know if you can't boot into Safe Mode. Do not continue with the fixes.

• When you see the BIOS screen, start pressing F8 repeatedly
• A boot menu will appear
• Using the up down arrows, select Safe Mode and press the Enter key
• Windows will now load
• Log in to your usual account

• Navigate to C:\SDfix (if you installed it to the default location, otherwise, locate where you installed it)
• Double click on RunThis.bat
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot
• When the PC restarts the tool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished
• Press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons
• Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen. You can also find the report in SDFix folder, named Report.txt
• Copy & paste the contents of the log in your next reply

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Hi,
For the first question, No, the computer is not used for any games. For the second, I don't know what "C:\WINDOWS\8-25-08.reg" is. However, it may be suspicious as I think that the date associated with the file (August 26, 2008) is the same date that I originally started having problems. There is another file with the same date "C:\WINDOWS\win.ini" (type = configuration settings) that I also do not know about.

On another note, so far, I have been applying all of the applications and fixes on the computer while it is disconnected from the internet (using another computer). The original problem was only occuring when I was on-line and seemed to be limited to the random sound files being downloaded and played on my laptop. So I guess in order to find out if I am still having the problem, I will need to go back on line. Do you recommend that I go back on line to test whether the issue is still occurring or not? Based on what you have seen in the logs, do I need to back up any files before I go back on line?

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT

• Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it on to your desktop. HERE
• Click on the erunt-setup.exe
• Follow the prompts to install ERUNT
• Choose language
• A set up window will pop up. It will ask: Create ERUNT entry in to the Start up folder, answer NO
  
  
  
• Backup your registry to the default location

Note: To restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

• Open Notepad by click start
• Click Run
• Type notepad into the box and click enter
• Notepad will open
• Copy and Paste everything from the Quote box into Notepad:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]

NOTE: Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
NOTE: Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

• Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your desktop
• Close Notepad, and double-click Fix.reg on your Desktop
• When it asks if you want to merge the info to the registry, hit YES/OK
  Reboot computer

Remove HijackThis entries

• Run HijackThis
• Click on the Scan button
• Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

• Close all open windows and browsers/email etc...
• Click on the Fix Checked button
• When completed close the application.

RegQuery by Noviciate

Please download RegQuery by Noviciate to your desktop

• Copy the following registry keypath by highlighting the text and pressing CTRL and C at the same time

• Double click RegQuery.exe to run the program
• Paste the text you have copied using CRTL and V, into the textbox

Hi,
Thanks so much for all of your help. I ran through the last set of instructions and I'll post the final logs below. So far, everything seems fine. The "random sounds" have stopped and there are no other obvious issues. I do have one other item that I'd like to ask your advice on. I have read about several good free anti-virus programs on this site and others and am considering loading one of these rather than extending the commercial system I have been using. Do you have any advice or suggestions for which anti-virus I should consider? Also, can you tell me anything about the particular malware I had on my system and where I might have picked it up? Any other advice for how to keep things clean moving forward?

Do you have any advice or suggestions for which anti-virus I should consider?

I will give you some advice when you are clean. Now we concentrate on cleaning your computer. So please do not uninstall your antivirus program (Symantec).

Also, can you tell me anything about the particular malware I had on my system and where I might have picked it up?

You had several Trojans in your computer. Here is description of what Trojan means:

Trojan
A trojan (or Trojan horse) is a small malicious program that pretends to have a particular function, but that only shows its real purpose after execution and that purpose is often destructive. Trojans cannot multiply themselves, which differentiates them from viruses and worms.

You also had a infection that steal onlinegame passwords, but because you dont use the computer for online gaming you are ok. Also you would have had problems with your online gaming.

It is very hard to say where you got it from, usually it is through users actions unfornately. Also you might have visited a site that was infected without you knowing.

Any other advice for how to keep things clean moving forward?

We still have some work to do. I will give you some advice when you are all clean.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

• Save it to your desktop
• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
• Under Main choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.

Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

• Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
• It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
• When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
• Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
  Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
  Archives
  
• Click on My Computer under Scan.
• Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
• You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
• Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Download OTMoveIt2 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

• Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
• Copy the lines in the codebox below.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

I see that you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on your computer could you please do a scan using these settins:

• Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
• Select the Update tab
• Click Check for Updates
• After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
• Select Perform full scan, then click on Scan
• Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan
• When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results
• Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected
• After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest

JavaRa

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

• Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
• From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
• JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
• Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
• A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 following the instructions below:

• Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and click on Download button.
• In Platform box choose Windows.
• Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
• Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says
  jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe
  and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
