Pop ups and slowness on some sites.

Unread postby Deaths Head II » September 13th, 2008, 8:31 pm

My web browsers on my laptop are really slow when accessing certain websites and I get popups for different companies. Most occur on sites I never received them before. The sites that are running slowly are popular sites like google or yahoo that work fine on my desktop.

Hello Deaths Head II,

You missed renaming HijackThis before posting the new report.

Please see instructions in my previous post, rename HijackThis and post a new HijackThis log.

Do you still have pop-ups?

Hello Deaths Head II,

And yes, the pop-ups are gone and all the websites that wouldn't load before are loading now.

Very good!
----------------------------------------------
REMOVE VIEWPOINT

You have Viewpoint, installed on your system. This program is not malware but is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it.

To uninstall the Viewpoint:
  • Go to start > control panel > programs and features.
  • Right click on each instance of:

    Viewpoint
  • Click Uninstall & then follow the prompts to remove it.
----------------------------------------------
Disable Windows Defender until the computer is clean
Windows Defender normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

  • Open Windows Defender
  • Select Tools and then General Settings
  • Under Real Time Protection Options uncheck Turn on real-time protection
  • Select Save
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

If the instructions above do not work, see the link below to disable windows defender.
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/13f74d76-344a-4dcc-9284-7ab43d9171b21033.mspx
----------------------------------------------
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
JavaRa

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location, and copy/paste it back in this topic.
----------------------------------------------

Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

The JavaRa log won't popup for me, even if the scan says it is going to.

Hello Deaths HeadII,

It looks that you didn't follow the instructions in my previous post.

Your Windows Defender and Spybot are still enabled, you didn't fix the lines with HijackThis, so your HijackThis is the same as before.

Please do all the steps i posted before, let me know if you removed Viewpoint, and post a new HijackThis log, and JavaRa report, which should be here:

C:\JavaRa.log

Also let me know what is this Folder:

C:\Windows.old

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
