Search Engine redirecting

Unread postby roddair » September 3rd, 2008, 3:29 pm

My pc got infected by the antivirus xp 2008 spyware, after searching the internet used a couple of programs to locate this and remove it, I thought I had resolved it as all traces of it seemed to have been removed however now I am having the search engine redirecting issue and am not able to access hotmail or download other spyware removing programs, although this last one I can get round by copying the programs from my other pc.
Can you offer any further advice. Many Thanks in advance

Hi Craig

Sorry about the delay in responding :( The forums have been very busy

1 - Scan With ComboFix

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix -

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says -

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows -

  • Close/Disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

2 - uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

4 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the ComboFix log(C:\ComboFix.txt)
2. the uninstall list
3. a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

Here is everything you asked for. At the beginning of the combifix log it says that I do not have the recovery console installed. I thought I had installed this however I correctly installed it after seeing this message. Hope thats ok.

Hi Craig

SDFix
If you already have SDFix, delete it & download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on SDFix.exe. By default, it will install to C:\
  • Click on Install
  • Don't run it yet
Print out or save this set of instructions as you will not have internet access during the fix.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode
:!: Let me know if you can't boot into Safe Mode. Do not continue with the fixes.
  • When you see the BIOS screen, start pressing F8 repeatedly
  • A boot menu will appear
  • Using the up down arrows, select Safe Mode and press the Enter key
  • Windows will now load
  • Log in to your usual account
  • Navigate to C:\SDfix (if you installed it to the default location, otherwise, locate where you installed it)
  • Double click on RunThis.bat
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot
  • When the PC restarts the tool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished
  • Press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons
  • Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen. You can also find the report in SDFix folder, named Report.txt
  • Copy & paste the contents of the log in your next reply

Hi Craig
You’ve done a good job so far........

1 - Check files for Viruses.

Code: Select all
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CF16678.exe

  • Copy/Paste the file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Note details of any viruses found

2 - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

Ok I've done everything although I'm not sure whether the virus check on the file worked due to the response I got from it so I may have done something wrong but I did follow the instuctions!

The virus check result showed this:

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file

i did repeat it with the firewall removed but got the same result!!

So everything certainly appears to be running the same before I was infected with the problem. All the issues I was having when I got infected aren't apparent anymore so I'm hoping that you've managed to get rid of it.

Many Thanks

Hi Craig
Logs, looks good but let's run one online scan to be sure

1 - Clean temp files

    Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

    Under Main choose:
      Windows Temp
      Current User Temp
      All Users Temp
      Temporary Internet Files
      Prefetch
      Java Cache

      *The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.
    if you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.
    if you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program

2 - F-Secure Online Scan

  1. Please go to F-Secure website to perform an online scan. Click on Start scanning at the bottom of the page.
  2. You may be prompted to install an ActiveX before you are able to accept the License Agreement. If prompted, please install it. After installing, the Accept button will be available.
  3. Click on Accept to accept the License Agreement.
  4. Click on Custom Scan.
    • Under Virus Scan Options, select the Scan whole system option.
    • Under Other Scan Options, select these options:
      • Scan all files
      • Scan whole system for rootkits
      • Scan whole system for spyware
      • Scan inside archives
      • Use advanced heuristics
  5. Click Start.
  6. It will start installing the scanner and virus definitions. Once the installation is done, it will start scanning automatically. This takes a while. Please be patient.
  7. Click on I want decide item by item.
  8. Under Actions, select None for all infections found.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Click on Show Report.
  11. Please copy and paste this report in your next reply.
  12. Click Finish.

3 - Update Adobe Reader

  1. Please uninstall Adobe Reader 7.0.7 before installing the latest version by going to Start > Control Panel and double clicking on Add/Remove Programs. Locate Adobe Reader 7.0.9 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  2. Click here to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  3. Select your Windows version and click on Download. If you are using Internet Explorer, you will receive prompts. Allow the installation to be ran and it will be installed automatically for you.

If you are using other browsers, it will prompt you to save a file. Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
  4. Close your Internet browser and open it again.

If you don't like Adobe Reader, you can try Foxit PDF Reader. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

4 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

5 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the F-Secure online scanner report
2. a fresh HijackThis log

Hi Craig

Congratulations, your log looks clean! :)

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Image
  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

Please download OTMoveIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch the programme.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programmes alerts you, allow it access.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections.
This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a very basic firewall.
This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

I strongly suggest you download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:
  1. Comodo
  2. ZoneAlarm (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)
  3. Ashampoo

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.1
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Note:"Be sure to disable the service "DNS Client" FIRST to allow the use of large HOSTS files without slowdowns.
If this isn't done first, the next reboot may take a VERY LONG TIME.
This is how to do it. First be sure you are signed in as a user with administrative privileges:
Stop and Disable the DNS Client Service
Go to Start, Run and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service.
DNS Client
Right-Click on the DNS Client Service. Choose Properties
Select the General tab. Click on the Stop button.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Manual
Click the Apply tab, then click OK

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com
Note: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing!
